  1. I last saw Ed in the TV movie Too Big to Fail starring the wonderful William Hurt and James Woods another great fave of mine. It has political content that might well be up Ed’s street as it chronicles the financial meltdown of 2008 and centers on Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson [Hurt]. Ed has also appeared in 4 video games including reprising in 2009 his Up voice role.

IMDB credits Ed with 37 acting awards and 25 noms; and in 2016 his net worth was assessed at $10 million [$10.8 million today]. Outside of The Greats I think that he is one of the most deserving cases that I have ever seen for a Cogerson new page because not only has he contributed a truly massive body of work over the years; but also because just as Julia might well be in contention for Thins’ crown as Cogerson Queen Ed seems to be in line for usurping Bruce’s own position as THE Work Horse.

He has a whopping 17 projects in – or potentially in – the pipeline. That is the highest number I personally have yet to see for any thespian and the breakdown is as follows:

    COMPLETED 1
    FILMING 1
    POST-PRODUCTION 5
    PRE-PRODUCTION 7
    ANNOUNCED 3.

All that energy at 91 this November – and to think that OUR Work Horse is just in his 50s and Greats like Gable and Cooper were old men by the time they reached their late 50s!

  2. I have seen Edward Asner in 8 big screen movies:
    Up [Voice]
    JFK
    El Dorado
    Kid Galahad
    The Satan Bug
    Change of habit
    Hard Rain

Mostly though I watched him in the TV series Lou Grant [1977-82] and used to be glued to that series. In real-life Ed was a controversial character who was a political activist in championing causes perceived as “left” – in the US at any rate – and when Lou Grant was suddenly cancelled at the peak of its popularity Ed was convinced that it was because of his perceived left-wing political persuasions.

It is almost an understatement for WH to lead with the suggestion that Ed was a TV legend because I have counted over 200 television productions that are currently detailed on Wikipedia. I never watched The Mary Tyler Moore show; but many other series among Ed’s TV filmography have been among my faves-Ironside; Criminal Minds; The Untouchables; The Name of the Game; Cade’s County starring the great Charlie Bill Stuart; and one that should be a favorite with everybody on THIS site : James Drury as The Virginian! I have seen Ed as well in a couple of Christmas TV movies

  3. I have seen 6 Edward Asner movies. I love The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Up.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is El Dorado.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is They Call Me Mr. Tibbs!

    Favourite Edward Asner Movies:

    Up
    Elf
    The Slender Thread

Other Edward Asner Movies I Have Seen:

    JFK
    Kid Galahad
    They Call Me Mr. Tibbs!

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our Ed Asner….as a television actor he is a legend….as a movie actor he has a nice spot in film history….but he is far from being a star. Tally count: 12 for me, 8 for bob cox and 6 for you. I have seen 2 of your favorites and 2 of your “others”. El Dorado is one of my favorite westerns….with a great performance from Mitchum….you might enjoy it. Good stuff as always.

  4. So much for Gus getting him connections.

So he was in Change of Habit with Mary Tyler Moore with Elvis.

Ed was 221 back in 2005 on the Oracle of Bacon list and now he’s gone. You don’t expect too many readers of him, he could have just as big a following as Lash Larue.

These are the actors on the 2020 list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for checking out our Edward Asner page. Asner is a television legend…..his movie career is solid…but far from stellar. You are correct….I had little to no expectations for this page to be a serious view getter. He does have a chapter in the Joel book….so I tried to sneak this one in…lol.

Based on his IMDb page….I am surprised he is not still on the Oracle list…..he has over 400 acting credits…..including many movies….granted those movies are low budget movies…..but that normally helps the Oracle ranking…heck he has 17 credits in different levels of post production.

Looking at the first list….first of all…..pretty massive. Secondly, Martin Landau gets the honors of most frequent Oracle co-star. Oscar co-star total is lower than average….but a good ratio when you only look at movies released in theaters. Good stuff as always.

FYI. I actually just saw Asner’s The Gliksmans…..his whole role takes place in a grocery store….it was not too impressive.

  5. I saw 8 plus the made for television gypsy a ten, including top 5 and 7 of top 11. 9s not favorites: up(high praise for anime), JFK, el dorado, the slender thread(poitier and anne Bancroft). hidden gem moon over parador (a Richard dreyfus spoof)

    1. Hey bob cox…..thanks for being the first one to find and comment on our Edward Asner page. Not thinking this is going to be a big view getter…but he made the Joel book, so I quietly created this page. Overall I have seen 12 of his movies. Wow…..you giving praise to an animated movie….is the world coming to the end?….lol. As for Moon Over Parador…I wanted to like it…..I saw it in theaters…I was a huge Dreyfuss fan….but I did not like that one at all. Good stuff as always.
