    1. Hey bob cox…hope your holidays were awesome.13 of the Top 14 is pretty impressive. I have been thinking it is time to watch The Godfather Part 2 again….right now…I am having a hard time remembering his role in that one. Stanton in In The Heat of the Night…I will have to check that out…and get it added to this page. Lots of great movies in your comment. I have somehow not seen Paris, Texas…..but I will in the near future. Good stuff as always.

  2. I just saw Paris, Texas a few weeks ago on TCM. It was okay, nothing special. Harry is # 35 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe List. These are the actors on the list he has appeared with. Note you’ll regret this one and don’t even think of M. Emmet Walsh.

  3. A cult movie favorite, the late Harry Dean Stanton at the UMR, nice.

I’ve seen 28 of the 82 films on the chart. Favorites are – Alien, Repo Man, The Avengers, Rango, Escape from New York, Cool Hand Luke, How the West Was Won, Kelly’s Heroes, Farewell My Lovely, The Green Mile and The Godfather II.

Harry found fame and recognition late in life, he was already in his 40s when he nabbed a small role in Cool Hand Luke.

I haven’t seen ‘Paris, Texas’ which many consider his best movie role, one critic called the film ‘one of the greatest American road movies ever made’.

My favorite Stanton roles – as Brett in ‘Alien’ and as the veteran repo man in the cult classic ‘Repo Man’ who becomes mentor to neophyte repo dude Emilio Estevez.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..thanks for checking out our HDS page. I have seen 40 of the above movies….slightly less than half. My tally is actually lower than I would have guessed. As for your favorites….seen and liked them all. I actually do not remember his role in How The West Was Won….but I love the movie. Kelly’s Heroes is a movie I re-watch pretty regularly. The amount of talent in the background of Cool Hand Luke is impressive….Wayne Rogers, Dennis Hopper and Stanton just to name a few. I like almost everybody that commented have not seen Paris, Texas….but I want to. I did watch Lucky….his last starring role…a decent movie with an Alien reunion between Harry and Tom Skerrit. Good stuff as always.

  4. I have seen 15 Harry Dean Stanton movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is How the West Was Won.

The highest rated movie i have NOT seen is The Godfather.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Farewell, My Lovely.

    Favourite Harry Dean Stanton Movies:

    How the West Was Won
    Cool Hand Luke
    Pork Chop Hill
    Private Benjamin

Other Harry Dean Stanton Movies I Have Seen:

    Kelly’s Heroes
    The Rose
    Pretty in Pink
    The Wrong Man
    Straight Time
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
    The Missouri Breaks
    Dillinger
    The Proud Rebel
    Wise Blood
    Farewell, My Lovely

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our Harry Dean Stanton page. Tally count. Cogerson 40, Steve 26 and you 15. Looking at your 15…all of them made between 1959 and 1980ish. Looking at your favorites…seen them all….with Cool Hand Luke and HTWWW being my favorites as well. Seen 7 of the other 11…of that list…I love Kelly’s Heroes. Good stuff as always!

  5. I have, by coincidence, just been watching Harry Dean in the 1985 One Magic Christmas [aka Father Christmas in Canada] – a REAL Christmas movie: not one of those ‘pretend’ offerings that The Work Horse lists for us around Christmas time. To be fair though WH does give One Magic Christmas a far-better-than-good 67% rating

However for me Harry’s real tour de force was the year previous in Paris Texas, a 2 hour 27 minute epic with Harry its star on screen virtually all the time. Good to see The Work Horse giving it a high 81% rating which means WH will find it difficult to argue with my high opinion of it!

Apart from when The Alien gobbled him up in 1979 my other fave Harry Dean films are Laddie’s The Proud Rebel, Newman Cool Hand Luke, Jeff Chandler’s The Jayhawkers [with Bruce for once recognizing Jeff’ contribution above] and Brando/Nicholson’s The Missouri Breaks.

In an interview Harry told how on the set of Missouri Breaks the cast were told that Brando was coming in the next day on the noon train to join them; so he and fellow actors parked themselves on a hilltop for half the following morning watching out for that train. When the smoke was spotted in the distance Harry and a few of the others chanted in excited unison “He’s coming! He’s coming! He’s coming!”

Viewers generally will HAVE TO come to sites like Cogerson to get information like the foregoing; you’ll not find it in Joel’s 1983 book for example – and I wonder what Joel WOULD think of his protégé giving Missouri Breaks a very reasonable 69% rating. Anyway according to Celebrity Net Worth site Harry Dean left behind a bank balance of $10 million when he died 2 years ago aged 91; and this profile of a fine actor is “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob. Good timing on my Stanton page and you watching One Magic Christmas. I get confused was One Magic Christmas the one Bruce took on terrorists in the tall building, the airport or New York City?…lol.

I will have to check out Paris,Texas…thanks for the mini-review. I have always wanted to watch that one…yet have never done it. I did watch and enjoy Lucky….he plays a 90 year old….a huge stretch for him as he was only 89 when he made the movie…lol.

Good stuff on his Brando connection and thanks for the compliment on putting this page together. I have been reading The 100 Best Films To Rent You’ve Never Heard Of by David Meyer…Harry appears in 5 of the movies mentioned in the book….that got me to think it was time to give Harry some UMR love. Good stuff as always.
