  1. My personal favourite Top 10 non-Duke Wayne Hathaway movies in the list are-
    TOP 2
    1/23 Paces to Baker Street
    2/Seven Thieves
THE OTHER 8 [In no particular order]
    Nob Hill
    13 Rue Madeleine
    Garden of Evil
    Call Northside 777
    Nevada Smith
    Kiss of Death
    The Racers
Down to the Sea in Ships
    THESE JOHN WAYNE ONES
    1/True Grit
    2/Sons of Katie Elder
    3/North to Alaska

Disappointments to me among my top idols were Greg’s Shootout and The Duke’s Legend of the Lost “Wayne has never looked older,” scathingly wrote one Joel-like critic when the movie was released. I’d loved to have punched that critic in the eye [and Joel too of course!] One that I missed but would like to see – Home in Indiana

IMDB credits Henry with just 8 acting awards/ 6 nominations but Bruce and I have already discussed how those figures might be much magnified under today’s awards/noms status quo. Anyway this new page is a comprehensive survey of the career of a great westerns direction specialist and is “Voted Up” [Regretfully the only Randy movie in the list is Go West Young Man which was not really a Scott movie but a Mae West vehicle and a comedy more than a western. We have True Grit but no True Scott!]

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for your excellent comments on Henry Hathaway. Thanks for the least of favorite Hathaway movies….your totals are impressive. Of the 13 you listed…I have seen 7 of them….the 3 Wayne movies would be near my top list as well. I have gotten real curious to track down and watch Legend of the Lost….it has been ages since I saw a “new to me” John Wayne movie. Shootout looks pretty average……but one day I will check that one out too.

I checked again to see if I had better luck with those early Scott/Hathaway movies….but I failed again. I agree…Henry Hathaway got little respect when it came to awards. Heck….if the truth be known….I recently watched Carousel (1956)….I thought I remembered seeing Hathaway was the director of that one and he would make a good page…turns out….I saw a Henry alright….but it was Henry King….so I picked the wrong Henry when I was putting this page together. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the feedback. I guessed those very early Randy “oaters” would be difficult to find grosses for but thanks for trying anyhow.

Anyway from my perspective Scott’s 1950s westerns are the ones that I am most interested in and your Scott page includes every one of those without exception – and he made droves of them in that decade – so I have always been well satisfied with your Scott page.

By coincidence my brother and I were having a good laugh last Sunday recollecting a Scott 50s western in which the near 60 year old Randolph arrives in town and soon starts courting his leading lady, the usual almost “child bride” of Scott/Joel McCrea movies whose fathers are often about the same age as those two heroes.

In one scene Randy is coming out of church holding hands with the new Love of His Life and the preacher shakes hands with him and says “Glad you came to town. It’s good to see the young men coming to church. You may have started a trend.”.

However we young teenagers loved Joel and Randy so much that we cut them some poetic licence. It was all great fun back then. Take care and have a good weekend.

  2. I have seen 18 Henry Hathaway movies including 6 of the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is How the West Was Won.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Rue Madeleine.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is O Henry’s Full House. That anthology film airs on TCM every December because of the segment “Gift of the Magi.”

    Favourite Henry Hathaway Movies:

    How the West Was Won
    The Desert Fox
    Niagara
    Garden of Evil
The Lives of a Bengal Lancer
    Call Northside 777
    Kiss of Death
Down to the Sea in Ships
    The House on 92nd Street
    Nevada Smith

Other Henry Hathaway Movies I Have Seen:

    True Grit
    Now and Forever
    Go West Young Man
    Prince Valiant
    Johnny Apollo
    Fourteen Hours
    You’re in the Navy Now
    O Henry’s Full House

Shoot Out is, I believe, the only big screen movie I have not seen of Gregory Peck where he is the leading man. By your table, I am not missing anything, although I would like to see everything he has been in. I have also not seen the TV movie The Portrait co-starring Lauren Bacall and his daughter Cecilia Peck or his cameo in Amazing Grace and Chuck.

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Thanks for the visit, comment and tally count.
      2. Tally counts: Gold for Flora, Silver for Steve and Bronze for me.
      3. 13 Rue Madeleine is my first miss as well.
      4. HTWWW was won was my first match as well.
      5. I have seen 7 of your favorites….with HTWWW, Nevada Smith and Garden of Evil being my favorites.
      6. Interesting about O’Henry’s House playing every December.
      7. Shoot-Out does not look too impressive….a guy (George V.) was giving me a mini-review of that movie today….he agrees….not much there. So I think you are missing the right one.
      Good feedback as always.

  3. I saw 12, including 5 of top 9. tens and favorites: true grit, how the west was won. 9 not a favourite : call northside 777. no hidden gems.

    1. Hey bob cox…thanks for the comment on our Henry Hathaway page. Tally counts: Flora 18, Steve 17, me 16 and you 12. I love watching HTWWW on my blu-ray….it is stunning to see….the story is ok…but fun to see all the stars popping up. True Grit was Wayne’s Oscar winning movie….but rarely mentioned as being one of his great movies. I liked Call Northside 777…..shows a life that is so long gone. Good stuff.

  4. I’ve seen 19 of the 52 films on the chart, maybe more I can’t remember.

Favorites include – True Grit, North to Alaska, How the West Was Won, Kiss of Death, Garden of Evil, Lives of a Bengal Lancer and The Desert Fox.

Watched ‘Legend of the Lost’ a few days ago, not a great film but it was a pristine copy in HD I tivo’d off Film Four.

Hathaway directed most of How the West Was Won and the most memorable sequences.

Good stuff Bruce, Hathaway is on my files for a future director videos season.

    Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for the visit, the comment and the tally. Tally count…18 for Flora, 17 for you and 16 for me, 12 for bob cox. bob cox messed up the sequence…lol. I have still managed to not see Kiss of Death….I can see Flora shaking her head in disgust…lol.

I did not realize he directed most of HTWWW….that is a good piece of information to know. Legends of the Lost….an almost forgotten Wayne movie. Growing up, my best friend’s dad loved Wayne….yet he never mentioned that movie at all. Sounds like seeing it on HD is the way to go.

I would say my favorite Wayne/Hathaway movies would be The Sons of Katie Elder and North To Alaska. Look forward to your Hathaway video….lots of good movies on his resume.

  5. Great page. You have a John Wayne movie I have not seen, “Legend of the Lost”. Love the movie trailers, they help jog my memory.

    1. Hey George….I have not seen Legend of the Lost. But Wayne and Loren together sounds interesting. Glad you like your requested trailer pages. The stats show people are looking at the ones near the top of the rankings….while avoiding the ones at the bottom of the rankings. But….I know you like the ones near the end…so I made sure to include some of those….like the all-time classic…Super Dude. Thanks for checking out our Henry H. page.
