Jack Palance Movies

Want to know the best Jack Palance movies?  How about the worst Jack Palance movies?  Curious about Jack Palance box office grosses or which Jack Palance movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Jack Palance movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well, you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Jack Palance (1919-2006) was an Oscar®-winning American actor.   Palance’s career spanned 7 different decades.  He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for 1991’s City Slickers.  His IMDb page shows over 127 acting credits from 1949 to 2004.  This page will rank Jack Palance movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.  Sadly many of his movies from the 1960s and 1970s did not make the table (no box office). To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.

  • Sort Jack Palance movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Jack Palance movies by yearly domestic box office rank

Best IMDb Trivia On Jack Palance

1. Volodymyr Palahniuk was born in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania in 1919.

2. How Volodymyr Palahniuk became Jack Palance.  Step 1.  He started boxing under the name Jack Brazzo…compling a 15-1 record..his only recorded loss was to future heavyweight contender Joe Baski. Step 2.  His last name was actually a derivative of his original name. In an episode of What’s My Line?, he described how no one could pronounce his last name and it was suggested that he be called Palanski. From that he decided just to use Palance instead

3.  While Jack Palance was an understudy to Marlon Brando in the Broadway production of “A Streetcar Named Desire“, Brando, who was into athletics, rigged up a punching bag in the theater’s boiler room and invited Jack to work out with him. One night, Jack threw a hard punch that missed the bag and landed square on Brando’s nose. The star had to be hospitalized and understudy Palance created his own big break by going on for Brando. Jack’s reviews as Stanley Kowalski helped get him a 20th Century-Fox contract.

4. Jack Palance was infamous in Hollywood for his Method-style acting, in a time when Marlon Brando was one of its few practitioners. Once, while filming a fight scene with Burt Lancaster, Palance actually punched the unsuspecting Lancaster in the face. Lancaster responded in kind, by socking Palance in the gut, causing him to vomit.

5.  While accepting his Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor for City Slickers (1991) at the 64th Annual Academy Awards telecast (in 1992) Jack Palance commented on the casting directors thinking they can make a younger guy look older, while they wouldn’t know that an old guy did this at nights: he then flopped down on the floor and began doing a series of one-handed push-ups, stood up, spoke calmly further, even adding a slightly risqué joke. Afterwards, when asked about the stunt, he simply said, “I didn’t know what the hell else to do.” A year later, when he provided the voice of Rothbart in The Swan Princess (1994), his character is featured doing one-handed push-ups.

  1. Hey Dan. Thanks for sharing this information on Jack Palance. Awesome memory recall on the 3-D viewing I was movie. I think 3-D has once again died. Maybe it’ll come back in another 20 or 30 years. I was 3-D TV and DVD player that is about to be exchanged for a 4K TV. Leaving me about 40 DVDs that I can no longer use.

So much surprise Jack is so high on the Oracle list. But seeing your massive list explains it. His second list is not nearly as impressive. If only the middle part of his career has been as strong as the beginning and ending of his career. Thanks as always for sharing this massive amount of trivia nuggets.

  2. I always find it surprising when I do not know the name, but then I open the page and I’m like, I know that guy! That said, I have not seen many of his films, but they are classics! I find it interesting he won an Oscar for City Slickers, maybe you can explain it to me, because I don’t get it. Seems to have lived an interesting life. Thanks for the post.

Favorite Top 10: Batman, not close, no question.
UMR Snub (Too High/Too Low): This is a tie, Tango & Cash/Young Guns.
Guilty Pleasure: This is a tie, Tango & Cash/Young Guns. Both of these movies were a massive part of my childhood/movie career.

    1. Hey Bryan. Pretty sure I made you watch numerous of his movies when you were a kid. Glad to see Tangi and Cash has made a lasting impact on you. As for his Oscar win, that would be one of those Oscar career wins. I think it’s safe to say he had two successful parts of his career, the beginning in the end. The middle is not quite as impressive. Your efforts yesterday and doing all these comments is greatly appreciated.

  3. I saw 12 including 11 of top 15. no tens. 9s not favorites: shane(I am not a ladd fan, my apologies to the Bob for siding with his son), panic in the streets. 8 and favorite the silver chalise (paul newman called it the worst movie of the 50s , later he apologized to his fans for his performance by taking out an ad in 2 newspapers in 1963 when it was shown on tv.)

    1. Hey Bob Cox. Sorry I missed this comment, but Bryan’s recent one comment here has alerted me to some missing comments. Good news is I get lots of comments, the bad news is I don’t have the time to respond to all of them. In the old days I get like three or four comments and could easily keep track, that is no longer the case. I am sure Bob is willing to forgive you for your Alan Ladd slight. Especially since U2 seem to agree on so many other things. I have never seen the silver chaliise. So I have no idea just how bad it is. Seems you like it much more than Paul Newman does.. Good stuff.

  4. Hmm I was almost sure you’d done a page on Palance before, better late than never.

I’ve seen 16 of the 40 films listed on the chart. Favorites are Shane (one of the most memorable screen villains ever, I remember one reviewer calling ‘Jack Wilson’ the incarnation of pure evil). City Slickers 1 & 2, Batman, Tango & Cash, The Big Knife, Halls of Montezuma and The Professionals.

I need to see ‘Panic in the Streets’ again, it’s been awhile.

I’ve just read the synopsis to Sudden Fear at wikipedia so I don’t need to see that film. I know I know I couldn’t help it. I started reading the first sentence and didn’t stop… sorry. It’s a familiar plotline, nothing new or fresh.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for the thoughts on Jack Palance. Sorry it took so long to respond. I seen all of your favorites, with the exception of the big knife. I agree with your assessment on his role and Shane. Well deserving of his Oscar nomination, one of the few times a bad guy western villain got a nomination. Tango and Cash is without a doubt a guilty pleasure. Kurt Russell is very funny in that one. Stallone wanted Russell to appear in the expendables but Russell was not interested. Good stuff as always.

  5. I remember seeing Second Chance (1953) in 3-D at the Thalia theater on Broadway with Drums of Tahiti (1954) also in 3-D at the Thalia revival theater circa 1980. I believe the Thalia was on 95th street just off Broadway in Manhattan.

I saw Shapes of Things to Come with Laserblast in one of the 42nd street dives back then.
