  1. 1 I had meant to get round to this one a few days ago but you may have noticed that some guy got me embroiled in complicated technical arguments about stars’ billing arrangements and that I had to try to educate another person on the stupendous commercial success of Cameron Diaz. And when I did get round to your Jane video what a great treat! You have clearly brought out as only a pictorial presentation can how wide a range of different parts Jane tackled over a long career. I am certainly in full agreement with Bruce ranking her No 8 in his 25 great actresses chart. Indeed Jane transcended movies in a considerable way with the attention her politics got –and what a tremendous opening quote yours is in that respect! – and with her fitness workout videos that were best sellers and were highly popular with women.

2 Yours posters and stills were of such a high quality throughout that I was at loss for choice so at random I’ll just compliment you on the posters for Joy House and The Morning After and the stills of Redford/Jane and Jane/ Lemmon/Mike Douglas. However I WILL single out the raunchy stills and posters for Barabrella as not only do they remind us of how attractive young Hanoi Jane was but for years that movie was an enigma for me as I saw widely varying reports of its box office performance ranging from rentals of a silly 20 thousand dollars
to those of a healthy 5.5 million so I have been glad that (a) Bruce at last gave us a solid realistic gross of around $100 million for it (b) you have showcased the film so well in your video

3 You and Bruce are agreed on 3 of your Top 5 and I was pleased to see that both of you gave the Fonda/ Mumbles union in The Chase a respectable rating of around 73%. Speaking afterwards about the making of that film Jane spoke highly of Mr M as a co-star. Also congratulation on making the excellent Julia your No 4.

4 Your poster for Old Gringo (1989)is a fine bookend for the magnificent top star career of Gregory Peck because it shows Greg [his heyday behind him] getting 2nd billed in a normal full-length role for the first time since Duel in the Sun way back in 1946. What a testament to the longevity of a great performer! In an interview Greg spoke warmly of Jane as his producwer a co-star in that film and quipped “It’s the first time I ever kissed my producer!”

    5. Frankly I was so stunned by this video and I want to give it my highest ever rating of 9.6/10. Very well done Steve. I have just been listening to the old Bernard Cribbiins pop song “Right Said Fred” so you might be able to guess where I will be off to soon!

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, rating and kind words, much appreciated. Your reviews always make me go back to my videos and look at them again, something I wouldn’t normally do. Usually by the time I finish a video I’m sick of the sight of it and never want to see it again. 🙂

What I noticed looking at the posters was that Jane Fonda was top-billed in a large percentage of the 30 films on the video. Oh no I mentioned the verboten words ‘top-billed’, I’ve set Bob off again, here we go… sorry Bruce…. [bursts into tears] but seriously Jane was a gorgeous young lady and still beautiful in middle-age.

Of her films I’ve watched Barbarella the most and I would have placed it higher on the chart but I don’t think anyone would accept it, at least it did make the top 30. Bruce has it at about the same place I have. I’m surprised there hasn’t been another film based on that comic strip since 1968.

On Golden Pond is higher on Bruce’s chart but my sources weren’t as impressed with it, the highest score being 8 from a Radio Times reviewer.

  2. HI BRUCE

1 Just being going over your fine Jane Fonda update in which you’ve given an adjusted gross of around $55 million to Tall Story

2 It’s too far back for Mojo to give us a quote but I see that the Numbers says it’s actual gross in 1960 was $12 million which would equate to an adjusted gross of almost 3 times your figure. Any particular thoughts on the matter?

3 Hope vacation is still going well BOB

    1. Hey Bob….I do not have access to my database but I quick look on Wiki and I see the rentals were 1.7 million…..so I feel my number is correct and their number is wrong. When I get back home I can give you better numbers.

  3. 1 After I sent my Jane Fonda post this morning I played an old audio tape of mine on which I had recorded a radio record request show way back in 1989/90. I have many old tapes going back to then. During the record requests guest star Gregory Peck came onto the show to talk about his then new film Old Gringo which he was in the UK to promote.

2 Old Gringo was produced by Jane through her film company and she had selected Greg for the male lead. In the interview he said they had got on fantastically well and that at the end of a day’s successful shooting they would often give each other a congratulatory kiss or hug; and then Greg quipped “That was the first movie on which I ever kissed my producer!”

No doubt Jane had reciprocal thoughts for she was probably living out the daydream of most of the young girls of the 1950s who would most likely have found to die for a kiss from matinee idol and all round legend Gregory Peck

[I have copies this to Greg’s page]

  4. From 1977 until 1981 Jane had a consistent run of success that most actors would envy with eight films that crashed through the $100 million barrier especially the monster hits Nine to Five and On Golden Pond, and all eight were in her Cogerson Top 12. Then that was more or less it at the box office over the next 35 years except for leads in Agnes of God (1985) and as Jennifer Lopez’s Monster in Law way back in 2005 and the supporting role of Nancy Reagan in The Butler (2013. However she seemed to become very popular in later years in connection with a range of videos she made about exercise and health regimes.

  5. Hi, Bruce.

I have indeed seen enough Fonda films to comment on her. Again, I had a concert this past weekend and another performance next weekend.

As you suspect, I am more familiar with her earlier career. I have not seen Barbarella and have no interest in it. As a second generation Hollywood star and as a fan of her father I am more familiar with her than some of her peers. I prefer her over Peter’s films.

The highest ranked film I have seen is Number 1, On Golden Pond.

The highest ranked film I have not seen is Number 2, Coming Home. It is not a film I am interested in seeing.

The lowest ranked film I have seen is Number 40, Old Gringo opposite my favourite actor of all time. Big surprise.

The most recent movies of hers I have seen were made in the 1980s.

Among films I have yet to see, the one I consider at the top of my list is Klute, despite the fact that my favourites are all comedies. My top to see 60’s film is Any Wednesday.

I have seen 4 of the top 5
I have seen 5 of the top 10
I have seen 9 of the top 20
I have seen 10 movies overall.

Not a lot I know. However, I quite enjoy Cat Ballou, Sunday in New York, Barefoot in the Park, and Period of Adjustment. Old Gringo would be my fifth choice.

    Cheers,

    Flora

    1. Hey Flora.
      1. Sounds like you are very busy this holiday season…..busy but having fun I hope.
      2. Tally count….me 21….you 10 and Steve 6…..victory for me….doing the happy dance.
      3. Her career far outshines Peter’s career.
      4. Why am I not surprised you have seen Old Gringo…lol.
      5. 4 out of 5 is off to a good start.
      6. Klute is good but not great. But it did get Jane her 1st Oscar.
      7. I have heard good things about Any Wednesday….she got really good notices for her performance in that one. It is on my list of Fonda movies to watch too.
      8. I have only seen 2 of our top 5. It has been years since I saw Cat Ballou…..I did recently rewatch Barefoot in the Park….she and Redford made a great screen team
      Thanks for your Fonda thoughts.

      1. Since this page was written, TCM aired a day of Jane Fonda’s films and I recorded/watched some more titles.

I have added Any Wednesday, In the Cool of the Day, Tall Story to my list of seen movies.
Tall Story is very funny and shows how Perkins could have had a broader range of film genres. Any Wednesday gave me an opportunity to see a fun Dean Jones film as a tribute to him having died last year.

I gave up on Steelyard Blues not quite 30 minutes into it. Yawn!

        That makes my total 13.

        Flora

        1. Hey Flora….you are catching up. Sounds like TCM is a great place to improve tally counts. That is cool about Perkins….he seems more like a basketball player than he was a baseball player in Fear Strikes Out. All three of the ones you watched are from her very early movie career. Sorry about Steelyard Blues…that movie has never gotten much respect….it is probably one of the ones she wishes she had not made. Thanks for the update.
