  3. I am a little disappointed in myself here…I really like Joanne Woodward, yet I have only seen 15 of the movies listed…always wanted to see Glassmenagerie and Rachel, Rachel, but no luck yet. My faves are From the Terrace, Philadelphia, No Down Payment, The long, hot Summer, Big Hand for the little Lady and Summer wishes, Winter dreams, though maybe Miss Sidney is responsible for this ? I have seen her AA winning performance as Eve, but its been a long time and I dont remember having been that impressed back then. Anyway, a great career, an even greater marriage or so it seems. As always, an interesting page on a lady well deserving her own UMR recognition ?

    1. Hey Lupino
      1. Well you might be disappointed…but your 15 Woodward movies is the most in our tally contest.
      2. You 15, me 12, Flora 10 and Steve at 2.
      3. When I got to Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams…my first thought was….”that is going to be a hard movie to find”….but then I saw it was S.S.’s Oscar nominated movie role…and I thought cool it is already done….thanks to Lupino.
      4. Of your other favorites…I liked Philadelphia and The Long Hot Summer too.
      5. Newman and Woodward’s last work together was the television mini-series…Empire Falls…..they give wonderful performances….I have it on DVD….and all of these Woodward talk has me thinking it is time to watch it again.
      6. Not a fan of Tenn. Williams movies at all….so watching The Glass Menagerie is far down my list of things to do….but I want to see Rachel Rachel.
      7. Thanks for sharing your Joanne Woodward Movie thoughts.

  4. 1 Probably not even the most die hard Joanne Woodward fan would argue that she was ever as big a star as her husband but the latter became such a legend and megastar that she could have been completely overshadowed by him whereas in my opinion that was not the case and I agree with Bruce that Newman/Woodward together were one of Hollywood’s most successful screen couples of all time.

2 Especially in the years between 1957 and 1969 Joanne not only shared several highly successful collaborations with her husband in which she was his leading lady [and even his star in Rachel Rachel which he merely directed and she was billed alone above the title] but was in a number of other movies in which she was either THE star or one of them – Three Faces of Eve, No Down payment, The Sound and the Fury, The Fugitive Kind, A Fine Madness and A Big Hand for the Little Lady [aka Big Deal at Dodge City]. In flicks like these she was able to command star billing alongside prominent males of the time such as Brynner, Connery, Brando and Hank Fonda.

3 Accordingly I feel that Joanne fully merits her own Cogerson page which I welcome. My personal favourite Woodward roles were in A Kiss before Dying where I thought Robert Wagner too was at his best, Count Three and Pray with Van Heflin and Big Deal at Dodge City as it was called over here. I remember seeing it while on holiday in the British Channel Islands in the summer of 1966 and found Joanne a joy to watch in that particular movie and I loved the surprise ending to the movie.

    1. Hey Bob
      1. I agree with you…Woodward was a great actress…..but her hubby was a superstar.
      2. I remember taking a class in college that dealt with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs…we had to pick some who had reached the “self-actualization” level of the pyramid. I picked them….at the time Newman’s Own was just getting started….this is a long winded way of saying…I am glad you agree with me about them being the most successful screen couples of all-time.
      3. The fact that almost everybody but Newman got an Oscar nomination for Rachel, Rachel…really shocked Newman….he got a Best Producer nomination….but he did not get Best Director nomination…which back then almost every Best Picture nominated movie got a Best Director nomination….but not Newman.
      4. I agree her run from 1957 and 1969 was truly impressive.
      5. I have not seen A Kiss Before Dying…..but I want to…..before doing my Wagner page….I was not even aware of that movie.
      6. Thanks for sharing your summer of 1966 Woodward memories.
      Happy New Year.

  5. Not an actress I’m familiar with movie-wise. I’ve only seen two films from the chart – A Kiss Before Dying and The End. Only knew her from her marriage to Paul Newman.

Married to Newman from 1958 to his death in 2008. In comparison Liz Taylor got married a dozen times during that period. tsk tsk 🙂

There are no films here that I’m dying to see, well maybe Winning, Newman’s big racing film. Garner had Grand Prix, McQueen Le Mans and Cruise Days of Thunder.

    Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve.
      1. Thanks for stopping by.
      2. Tally count….me at 12…Flora at 10….and you at 2?…..wow you are not much of a Newman fan at all.
      3. Her Hollywood marriage is a great goal for all actors that get married….Brad and Angelina only broke up 39 years early.
      4. Hmmmm…..which ones can I recommend to you….Winning was ok…..Robert Wagner is pretty good in that one…..but I would say Philadelphia (Plus you get Hanks), Three Faces Of Eve (Her Oscar winning role) and The Drowning Pool (Newman as a detective) are worth watching.
      5. Avoid WUSA at all costs….easily the worst Newman movie that I have ever watched.
      Good feedback as always.
