  1. I think The Master is one of the worst films ever mad. On Burgess Meredith’s page I forgot to mention the 1987 King Lear he was in was also one of the worst films ever made. Joaquin is not on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. These are the actors on the list who have appeared in a film with him;

I’ve seen Mary Magdalene with him which I believe has not been aired anywhere in America, probably because it was going out through Harvey Weinstein’s company. You’re not missing anything.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for sharing this information.
      2. Glad to see that I am not alone in The Master dislike…I heard such great things about it….and then I saw it and it was so bad….I thought I must have missed something.
      3. Even though he is not on the current 1000…if he keeps making 4 movies a year like he did in 2018…he will find himself on the list soon.
      4. I looked for box office on Mary Magdalene….but found nothing…your comment makes me realize why it had no box office….I will indeed skip that one.
      5. His most famous frequent co-star is Sean Penn….I found that surprising.
      6. His 2000 list is pretty short.
      7. 29 Oscar winners is pretty good….not near Caine or Meredith…but almost 30 with so few movies…and he worked with people that could be joining that list in the near future.
      Good stuff as always.

  2. I saw 9 including 6 of top 7. 10s and favorites: parenthood, gladiator, her. 9s: signs and walk the line(great performances). I agree completely master is beautifully acted and pointless, a bad movie. 8mm is a strong horror flick and really bad movie. hotel Rwanda an important historical 7. her is the hidden gem with 5 Oscar nominations but is it about relationships or masturbation? a great performance with rich meaning for me, I can understand it not doing well at box office. he kind of reminds me of Nicholson he choses roles that are incredible while one and done.

    1. Hey bob cox….thanks for the tally count, visit, comment and mini-reviews. Looks like we have the same favorites….and even though Walk The Line did not make my personal favorites…I think it is a good movie. Glad we agree on The Master….I thought that movie was such a waste of time. Not sure Her is a hidden gem….it was pretty popular when it came out…..and many people love that movie. Interesting comparison to Jack Nicholson. That comparison will be made a lot when his Joker movie comes out. I was thinking he reminded me of Marlon Brando….at least with the performances…he has not nearly had the success of Brando….glad you like your requested page. Good stuff.

  3. HI BRUCE Your chart and stats above credit Joaquin with just 7 $100 million crashers [of which he could be said to be the out and out star of just 3] and an adjusted domestic gross of $1.8 billion. Given that he has been in movies for 33 years it seems unlikely that he will ever become a major box office star and indeed his choice of subjects like The Master would appear to mitigate against that.

However having started young he is just 44 years old*** so has a bit of time to possibly do something else special. I never saw Walk the Line but for me his Gladiator outing was a tour de force

***When I saw you had given 1974 as his date of birth I thought you were mistaken and was looking forward to teasing you about it but instead when I checked it out I found myself thinking “Dammit he’s foiled me again!”

You will know more about American politics than I do but I would suspect that as Joaquin supports Bernie Sanders he’s as “left” as you can get in US mainstream politics.

What I DO definitely know though is that Joaquin is a keen animal rights activist and his partner Rooney Mara [whom I loved in 2015’s Carol and who reminds me a bit of Audrey Hepburn] is heavy into charity work for orphaned children.

To me those are more important considerations in the overall scheme of things than Brando’s Oscars, Myrna’s box office figures or Tracy’ billing and I regard Joaquin and Rooney as a couple to be admired as much as any celebrities. Kindly natures, bags of talent and a combined net worth of $42 million, who could ask for anything more?

I therefore warmly welcome this new page – “Vote Up+”

NB Talk about wanting more, I see that my Roger won another important ATP ranking title at the weekend bringing his total number to 99 , second in the Open Era to just Jimmy Connors with 109. One more obviously gives Roger 100 and puts him in the psychological “100 Club” alongside Cogerson “magical $100 million” barrier crashers!

He has now, aged 37, won 32 titles including 4 grand slams since the age of 30 when professional tennis players have traditionally been largely “past it” and that is equivalent within movies to, say Willis, winning Oscars and a slew of other acting awards in his late 60s.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our latest page. I agree he has not been a stellar box office star. He seems to be more active these days. He has 4 four movies this year alone….and his Joker is getting lots of buzz. I just saw him in Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot….and his performance is very impressive. I actually did not realize he and Rooney Mara were a couple….she is also in Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot. Glad they are doing so much charity work. Sanders is indeed on the left. Good stats on your “Roger”…he is like the Engerizer bunny…he just keeps going and going and…. As always….good feedback.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the feedback on my Joaquin post. I also like the exchanges between you and Bob [Junior!!]. Interesting Brando comparison. I never thought of that so it’s got me reviewing matters, comments on this site often giving one pause for thought and indeed at times 2nd thoughts such as “I was completely wrong to like that one that Joel praises!”

By the way with Halloween just passing today my family and I are into the Christmas movies on TV and last night we watched a “Joyous Christmas” presumably a made-for-TV movie released just last year. Bonnie Bedelia [aged 68 then] played an endearing elderly lady in it, in fact the “Joy” of the title. My gang all liked her and I said “You know she’s been in a Christmas movie before, in fact a great classic.” Everyone looked at me blankly!

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock.
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring.
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun.
Now the jingle hop has begun.

One of the most stunning openings to a movie that I can ever remember. One historian calls the film “One of the greatest NON-TRADITIONAL Christmas movies ever.” Within that context what about Flora’s reference to a Lady in the Lake as a movie set around Xmas time?

  4. I think the first time I saw Joaquin was in the sci-fi drama SpaceCamp, back when he was known as Leaf Phoenix. I never would have suspected back then that little Leaf would be a highly respected actor in decades to come.

You’ve easily beaten my tally Bruce, i’ve seen 14 of the 32 films on the chart. Favorites include – Gladiator, Signs, Parenthood, Her and SpaceCamp.

I liked his mad emperor Commodus in Gladiator, the same role played by Christopher Plummer in The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964).

Inherent Vice bored me and I haven’t seen The Master or Hotel Rwanda.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve….from Leaf to Joaquin it has been a nice transformation between child star and adult star. Generally…it has been a smooth ride for him….minus his I’m Still Here phase…which I still do not understand….but his appearance on David Letterman in 2009 is part of television history. 14 Joaquin movies seen….just a little behind my total. Wow…..all favorites almost match 100%….Space Camp the one I did not mention….still has a place in my heart. The real Space Camp is in WoC’s home town….so everytime we go back to Alabama…that movie gets in my head….there is a huge rocket by the camp….and can be seen for miles…everytime we drive by it…I think about Space Camp.

As for The Master….in my opinion…you are not missing anything….glad we agree on Inherent Vice…movie should have been good….instead it is a mess….and Joaquin’s leading character is not fun to watch at all…as always thanks for the feedback.

  5. I have seen 24 of these 32 movies…for a nice 75%. Favorite Joaquin Phoenix movies? Hmmmm in no particular order….Signs, Parenthood, Gladiator and Her. The Master was terrible in my mind….I know it got great reviews….and some serious Oscar love…but that might be my least favorite Joaquin role…with Inherent Vice being a close second. He has had 3 movies in theaters in 2018…seen two of them…and want to see The Sister Brothers.
