  1. I was thinking about Judi Dench a few weeks ago when I commented on the Maggie Smith page, her co-star in Ladies and Lavender and Tea with Mussolini. Like Dame Maggie, Dame Dench has enjoyed success on stage and the big screen, and also seems to receive increasing popular and critical recognition with age, though overall, I think Dame Maggie has had stronger career in the movies. Nevertheless, a great actress, highly deserving of a UMR page!

I have seen 18 of the movies listed, which surprised me at first, but this is partly explained by the fact I have seen all the James Bond films. Favorites include Skyfall (the one Bond film where Dench had a bigger role), Shakespeare in Love, Philomena, and Notes of a Scandal.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17….good comparison of Smith and Dench. I agree Smith has had the better overall career….though Dench has had the better last 25 years. The almost seem like mirror images. Both have appeared opposite each other many times. Both are Oscar winners. Both are in their 80s. Both were supporting players in major franchises….James Bond and Harry Potter.

I was looking at people with the most Oscar nominations….she was the one with the most nominations that did not have an UMR page yet…..so I felt I had to take care of that issue. Tally count…..Cogerson 29, bob cox 21, Steve 19, PhilHoF17 18 and Flora 11. All in double digits. As for your favorites…..I liked Philomena the best of those three. Good feedback, as always.

      1. Hey Bruce, all good points. Dench’s success in films started much later than Maggie’s, but aside from that, their careers have a lot of parallels. Glad we both liked PhilHoFmena 🙂 Interesting to hear about your favorite movies too.

  2. I’ve seen 19 of the 41 films on the chart. Favorites are all the Bond films, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Chronicles of Riddick, Miss Peregrine, Henry V (been ages since I last watched it) and Shakespeare in Love (fun movie but I prefer the other ‘Elizabeth’ Cate Blanchett).

Tomorrow Never Dies is my favorite of the Brosnan Bonds for pure action, sadly scoring far too low on the chart. Looking at my video files it has a better average of 6.8 though Goldeneye still beats it with 7.5 which matches your score.

If I had to choose between Skyfall and Casino Royale I will opt for the latter. But my all time favorite Bond movies star Connery, Moore and Lazenby. Nostalgia wins! 😉

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve. Tally counts: Me 29, bob cox 21, you 19 and Flora with 11. Dench and Bond, they made a good team. I missed her being in the last one. I wonder if they will get her back in another flashback on the one they are making now. Henry V is one of the few Shakespeare movies I actually enjoyed. That being said…I admit…I do not remember her part very well. I agree….give me Casino Royale other the other Dench Bond movies. Sorry your favorite Bond movie did not score well in our review %….but it has a nice spot in the Top 10 of Dench movies. Good feedback.
