    1. Hey Flora….thanks for the comment on our M. Emmet Walsh page. 13 movies of his is not too bad. Glad to see Blade Runner on your favorites list. I thought Cannery Row would have been on your favorites list as well…..guess I remain being one of the few that liked that one. Granted I have not seen it in years. I have seen 12 of your 13 movies seen…..with Snow Dogs being a possible as well…just not 100% sure I saw that one. Good stuff as always.

  2. I’ll always remember Walsh best as the captain of the ‘Replicant Detecting Division of the Los Angeles Police Department’ in Blade Runner. I must have watched that film at least a hundred times in the past 4 decades.

I’ve seen 26 of the 92 films on the chart, more than I expected. Favorites include- Blade Runner, Fletch, The Jerk, Airport 77, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Slap Shot, Serpico, Little Big Man, Knives Out, The Iron Giant and Raise the Titanic.

I liked the trivia on Ebert’s Stanton-Walsh rule. I watched Wild Wild West again recently, it has not improved with age.

    Good work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. HI STEVE: Good post on Emmet.

As I am sure you would guess most of the films that you’ve mentioned hold no appeal for me though the smart money’s on my loving the majority if not all of any posters you might provide for them.

No: my own fave Emmet movie is 1988’s Clean and Sober starring Michael Keaton as an alcoholic and Emmet as his sponsor in the rehabilitation clinic that Keaton enters.

I loved the performance of Walsh and Keaton and the way they bonded in the film but for me the icing on the cake was that the theme song was Domino sung by Belfast’s singing legend Van Morrison.

I actually lived in Cyprus Avenue for a while and that avenue was the title of one of Van’s most famous numbers: In performance it was a Morrison concert highlight and closer for years to come.

However I do I prefer Domino as a song.

      Don’t wannna discuss it
Think it’s time for a change
      You may get disgusted
      Start thinking that I’m strange

In that case I’ll go underground
      Get some heavy rest
      Never have to worry
About what is worst or what is best

      Oh oh Domino
Roll me over, Romeo, there you go
      Lord, have mercy
      I said oh-oh, Domino.

      1. Hey Bob….good call back on M.E. Walsh’s role in Clean and Sober. I remember when that movie came out…..it got Keaton some Oscar buzz….and was from the creator of Moonlighting which starred Mr. Bruce Willis. Good info on Van Morrison and Cyprus Avenue. Good stuff.

        1. Thanks for the feedback. I couldn’t risk the opportunity to have a go at Steve’s tastes in films – but I think you guys have become immune to my ‘sarcasm’/wind-ups by now as Steve didn’t bite and even rubbed salt in the wound by giving my post a thumbs up!

Such a low-life and unsavory character was Keaton ‘s drug addict/alcoholic Daryl Poynter in 1988’s Clean and Sober that when shortly afterwards he was announced for the role of Batman in the 1990 movie reintroduction of that character I though it wouldn’t work and opined the movie would be a flop.

However your Keaton page records that it had an adjusted worldwide gross of just short of one billion dollars [wow!] and here’s what you have to say about it in your lead-in on the Keaton page.

“After the success of Beetlejuice, Keaton moved to the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Batman would be his biggest hit of his career and Keaton would appear in the 1992 Batman sequel, Batman Returns.” That sequel added another adjustment worldwide $600 million to the Batman franchise coffers.

Michael is in fact my own personal favorite of all the screen Batmans. Talking about personal idols and favourites the “political animal” in me watched last night a documentary about the late Senator John McCain who ran against Obama in the 2008 US presidential race and McCain said that his own all-time favc book was Hemmingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls and that his lifelong fictitious hero had always been Robert Jordan the central character in the book played by Gary Cooper in the 1943 screen adaptation.

Incidentally when asked about his all-time favourite movie McCain replied 1952’s Viva Zapata and John singled out Brando’s performance for mention. As I’ve said before Donald Trump is supposed to rate The Godfather as one of his top 3 personal film faves; and in a statement to the press George W Bush publicly mourned Marlon’s passing back in 2004.

So maybe we should start calling Brando “the presidential choice’; though being a staunch Democrat and a strange character The Great Mumbler might not have over-welcomed flattery from 3 Republicans; and indeed might well have preferred kind words from even Joel instead.

Anyway the powerful Sinatra once said that he ceded top billing to Rita Hayworth in 1957’s Pal Joely because “A Columbia movie would not be a Columbia picture without Rita.” And this site would not be “Cogerson” if we didn’t find some way of working Hirsch into the script – just as there is always room for a Willis plug! There is anyway a bona fide Joel link to the themes of the overall post: he too praised MB’s performance as Zapata giving it the coveted 4 stars [probably equivalent to 8 stars from most other critics]!

          1. Hey Bob…..good feedback on M. Emmet Walsh, Michael Keaton and that unknown guy Marlon Brando….lol. Batman was huge back in the day…that is why I like using the adjusted gross versus the actual gross. That way people will realize how big a movie like Batman was back in the day. As for Keaton as Batman….you might get your chance to see him put the Batman suit on again…as there are lots of rumors he is going to do that in a Flash movie. Good feedback as always….look live the legacy of Hirsch.

    2. Hey Steve….I am right there with you on his role in Blade Runner. I think I have seen it a lot of times myself…the first time with my mom in theaters….we did not like the end when Rutger was running and beating up Harrison Ford…especially when he crashed his head through the wall. WoC has never seen it….maybe one day. I actually like the Ford voice over…..but I know not many others do. 26 is a solid total. If you have not seen Blood Simple….I would recommend that one….George from work borrowed my copy of that one……that 20th anniversary DVD features the craziest DVD commentary ever! The Coen brothers wrote an entire commentary that is completely fake. Glad you like the Stanton-Walsh rule. Good stuff as always.

  3. Back in 2007 I put together a monstrosity based on the Oracle list of that year connecting the top 250 to everyone on the Oracle top 1000. Although M. Emmett was # 57 at that time he connected to over 400 people on the list, more than anyone else. Since then he hasn’t added too many credits so he lost a number of people on subsequent lists and then the changeover of info from the IMDB to Wikipedia which reduced everyone’s connections by about 75%. Now on the 2020 list he’s ranked # 101. Let’s see how he held up and who he’s still connected to on the 2020 list.

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for the epic lists on the great M. Emmet Walsh. I can easily see that he has been moving down the Oracle list…as he seems to have slowed up compared to how many movies he appeared in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The late Brion James has the Oracle lead with 5 movies with him…with Bladerunner easily being the most famous and the best of those 5. While putting the page together, I kept noticing how many Oscar winning co-stars he had….like I said in my comment…I had counted around 50. Good stuff as always.

  4. Been a fan of his work since his stellar performance in Blood Simple.

I have seen 58 of the movies listed above.

I count a little over 50 Oscar winning co-stars…I suspect many more have escaped me.

My Top 5 M. Emmet Walsh Movies in ABC Order
#14 Bladerunner…..one of the great science fiction movies
#25 Blood Simple….the movie that put the Coen brothers on the map
#41 Cannery Row…..a movie that time has forgotten…in my mind worth tracking down
    #16 Fletch…..the height of Chevy Chase’s movie career….”Moooon….River”
#12 Slap Shot….one of the best sports movies….he made a few sports movies…Best of Times with Williams and Russell and Wildcats with Goldie (saw that one in theaters) just to name two more.
