Michael Keaton (1951-) is an American Oscar nominated actor who has appeared in many box office hits over the last three decades. Keaton appeared in numerous television shows before getting his big break in Ron Howard’s 1982 Nightshift. After the success of Nightshift, Keaton appeared in numerous comedies like Mr. Mom, Gung Ho and his first blockbuster hit Beetlejuice.

After the success of Beetlejuice, Keaton moved to the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Batman would be his biggest hit of his career and Keaton would appear in the 1992 Batman sequel, Batman Returns, before giving up the Batman role to Val Kilmer. Michael Keaton’s post Batman career has not been as successful.  Recently he has appeared in more supporting roles and has had great success providing his voice in the Pixar blockbusters….Cars and Toy Story 3.

1. Michael Keaton was born Michael Douglas. He decided to change his name because Michael Douglas(Wall Street) and Michael Douglas(tv talk show host) were already pretty famous. He picked Keaton based on actress Diane Keaton…he was going to change again when he found a better name but Keaton stuck.

2. One of Michael Keaton first television show appearances was on Mister Rogers’ Neigborhood in 1968. Keaton had been working as a stagehand when he was given a chance to work in front of the camera versus behind the camera.

3. Michael Keaton either turned down or was seriously considered for these roles: The Fly, Batman Forever, Get Shorty, Kingpin, Philadelphia, Pirates of the Caribbean:The Curse of the Black Pearl, Police Academy, Ghostbusters and Splash.

4. When director Tim Burton picked Keaton for role of Bruce Wayne in 1989’s Batman….Batman fanatics were very upset with the choice. Thousands of letters of protest were sent in saying that a comedian should not play Batman….it worked out pretty well despite the protests.

5. Michael Keaton has worked three times with directors Tim Burton and Ron Howard. The three Ron Howard movies are Nightshift, Gung Ho and The Paper. The three Tim Burton movies are Beetlejuice, Batman, and Batman Returns.

6. Michael Keaton was set to play Dr. Jack Sheppard in the pilot of Lost. In the original script Jack was supposed to die. When the producers decided to keep Jack alive….Keaton dropped out of the project. Matthew Fox would end up playing Jack for six years.

7. Michael Keaton is the youngest of seven children. He has been married one time to Caroline McWilliams from 1982 to 1990. They had one son, Sean Maxwell. Sean plays keyboard for the band The Hatch.

Born Michael Douglas….he has been a favorite since he stole the Night Shift from Henry Winkler. I have seen 35 of the 36 movies listed…..only missing #33 The Last Time. Favorites would include #27 Multiplicity…seems a little low….but I guess not all realize it’s greatness. #12 The Founder….great story #11 The Paper…my dad really liked that one. #4 Batman….hard to believe that one is 31 years old and #6 Beetlejuice…..though he is actually barely in the movie.   4. I thoroughly enjoyed Michael Keaton as Batman back in 1989. What especially impressed me about his turn as the Caped Crusader was the complete contrast of the role to the one that I had seen him the year before in the social drama Clean and Sober which is one of my own personal favourite films from my video days.

    In Clean and Sober Keaton plays a selfish alcohol and drug-addicted conman who goes into an AA rehab centre solely to hide from his financial creditors; undergoes a moral transformation in there; and comes out “clean and sober”. Belfast’s Van Morrison sings “Domino” over the closing credits.

    It was back to the con man role for Michael [though this time a high-class one with no addiction problems except conning people!] in a 2002 episode of the TV sitcom Frasier called “Wheels of Fortune”. He was hilarious in it [thus this time showing us how well sophisticated comedy too was within his acting range] and it is one of my own very fave Frasier episodes.

    IMDB credits Michael with 64 acting awards and 42 noms and he has a reported current net worth of $40 million. On top of his movie career he has appeared in 26 TV productions between 1975 and last year and has also made 4 video games in the 2006-12 period. In the pipeline for him at present are 3 movies at post-production stage.

      As I was telling Flora my youtube breaks are becoming more frequent, for several reasons including boredom doing this for 6 years now, lack of interesting subjects. I’ve covered all the greats, mostly young ‘uns and a few ageing character actors are left. This is probably my last year producing videos at youtube unless I can come up with some new ideas.

      Foreign posters are appearing less and less as we get to the modern age, todays posters are mostly made up of still frames of the actors, there are fewer painterly artworks. Sadly.

      And it’s almost pointless adding stills since the posters themselves are made up of photographs but I will still add stills if I find them interesting.

      Three films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Spotlight, Birdman & Toy Story 3.

      There is one film scoring 9 – Batman and several scoring 8 including Jackie Brown, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns and Much Ado About Nothing.

      Toy Story 3 tops all charts including Bruce’s UMR chart.

      Michael Keaton on changing his name – “Yeah, I had to change my real name (Michael Douglas) because there were two other actors registered at Equity with that name. One of them is doing quite well from what I understand, the other is making cheap porn movies–like Basic Instinct.”

      Keaton on being asked if he got jealous when other actors played Batman – “No. Do you know why? Because I’m Batman. I’m very secure in that.”

  5. 1 To be honest I had little interest in Michael during the first 10 years of his movie career because I didn’t think that the flicks that he made, including Beetlejuice, would appeal to me. Then within a few months of the latter movie Clean and Sober was released, and although it didn’t do well at the box office or for artistic praise from critics as demonstrated in the above table I admired Michael’s performance in Clean and Sober as low-life alcoholic con man Daryl Pontyn who transforms as the title suggests and becomes a “regular guy” to boot.

    2 Michael then proceeded to consolidate my good opinion of him by satisfactorily playing Batman in the first two films in that franchise, no small feat when he had to compete with deliciously hammy but riveting performances from Nicholson in the first and DeVito in the second not to mention gorgeous gals such as Basinger and Pfeiffer, two ladies who sadly nowadays in terms of stardom seem to be struggling with with W o C’s notorious “Curse of 39” but who were at the peak of their powers when Keaton was co-starring with them.

    3 As Bruce {Cogerson not Wayne!] says in recent times Michael has been less successful on the big screen but there have been compensations along the way. For example he reprised the con-man side of his Clean and Sober character in an 2002 episode of the TV series Frazier and although there was no redemption this time Michael was hilarious and he and Kelsey Grammer made wonderful chemistry together in the episode. So although I was late in my appreciation of Michael I will now always find him interesting to watch and am therefore glad to have had the opportunity to take part in this celebration of his 65th. I should also mention that Michael has continued to gather actng awards/nominations so that even if his box office has diminished in the last while his artistry has not and the new Spiderman release seems to be once again soundly ringing box office tills for Michael in a prominent role.
