Jared Leto Movies

Want to know the best Jared Leto  movies?  How about the worst Jared Leto movies?  Curious about Jared Leto box office grosses or which Jared Leto movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Jared Leto movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Jared Leto (1971-) is an Oscar®-winning American actor.    Leto is considered to be a method actor, known for his constant devotion to and research of his roles. He often remains completely in character for the duration of the shooting schedules of his films, even to the point of adversely affecting his health. This probably explains why his movie quantity is on the low side. His IMDb page shows over 40 acting credits since 1992.   This page will rank Jared Leto movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos, uncredited roles and movies that were not released in North American and a handful of his movies that we could not find box office on, were not included in the rankings. This page was requested by my daughter-in-law all the way back in 2011.  Sorry it took so long to get don Abby.

    1. I agree….I just added Morbius to our trailer page as well as this page. Leto will be joining the rapidly increasing club that has appeared in DC and Marvel movies. Michael Keaton is in that club already. I have to assume that Keaton was playing the Vulture. Should be interesting. Thanks for sharing the link.

  1. HI BRUCE:

Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to include Fight Club in my “have seen” list and it was in fact your nice little miniature still above that reminded me of my oversight.

The addition of Fight Club does not of course change the overall pecking order to date: WH 14/Steve10/Yours Truly 8.

    Keep safe.

  2. I’ve seen 10 of the 21 films on the chart. Favorites are – Panic Room, Fight Club, The Thin Red Line , Blade Runner 2049 and Suicide Squad.

I enjoyed Suicide Squad but I didn’t like Jared Leto as the Joker. I thought his manic performance and that stupid laugh spoilt the movie. Made me appreciate Heath Ledger’s Joker even more. My favorite Joker – still Jack Nicholson. It’s an age thing. 🙂

I read that Leto was quite upset when Joaquin Phoenix was chosen as the Joker in the new movie, he was shocked they didn’t go with him instead. I’m so relieved they didn’t.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. HI STEVE: Leaving aside guys like you, WH [and Hirsch if he were still around would have to be ignored as well] movie industry insiders who really count seem to feel that Jared’s Joker was a huge success because they have him lined up for two sequels:

1/In one The Joker played by Jared will be completely the central character. The pre-production notes read “Stand-alone project centering on The Joker from the 2016 film ‘Suicide Squad’.”

2/in a 2nd one Jared’s Joker will share the honours with Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn, again played by Margot Robbie. The pre-production notes read “A criminal love story between Harley Quinn and the Joker”

According to The Work Horse’s chart above, Suicide Squad grossed around $775 million when adjusted for inflation; and the rule of thumb regarding these rip-off franchises today seems to be that if you are prominent in one of them that lifts anything like three quarters of a billion dollar you can write your own ticket and are a ‘must’ for reprising your role in the inevitable sequel(s).

Also I think that “The Batties” [ie the lifelong fanatical Batman and Robin fans] would contend that debates about who among modern actors makes the best Joker are academic: THAT accolade as far as The Batties are concerned seems to go to Caesar Romero in the 1966 television series.

Suicide Squad and/or its sequels are not my cup of tea and I have no intention of watching any of them so this is one debate on Cogerson on which I will pass. If you and WH wish to argue the point, you can toss a coin to decide whose coat I’ll hold!

      1. Hey Bob…good information on Jared Leto and his possible future Joker movies….I think they are a long ways from being made…..if they ever get made. I did not really like Suicide Squad….and Birds of Prey will not be seen by me in theaters. So I will not be upset if his Joker movies do not get made. I suspect….Joaquin Phoenix will have a lot to do with Leto’s Joker movies….if Phoenix is interested in playing Joker again…then the studios will go his way versus the Leto way. Good stuff as always.

        1. HI BRUCE

Good additional thoughts on Jared . Thanks for sharing them.

I understand that the Harley Quinn project is the less certain of the two; but as Steve is clearly not a fan of Jared as The Joelker I wanted to wind him up by being as positive as I could about Jared getting both movies- there’s a mischievous ‘Hirsch horror’ lurking inside ALL of us!!!

    2. Hey Steve….thanks for the visit to our Jared Leto page. Tally count…I have seen 14 of his movies. Seen all of your favorites…with Blade Runner 2049 being my favorite. His Joker in Suicide Squad looked awesome..yet the movie gave him nothing to do. I remember thinking after it was over…”All that hype for such a little role.” I am glad Phoenix played the Joker next…but I can understand Leto’s frustration…as it sounds like he did a lot of research and spent many hours getting ready to play the Joker….and in the end…..most of his part ended up on the cutting room floor. Good stuff as always.

  3. Who knew he was so busy. His band has had 1 Gold album “This is War” which got to 19 on Billboard and one platinum album “A Beautiful Lie”: which peaked at 36 but was on 74 weeks on the top 200. In addition their album “Love Lust Faith + Dreams” peaked at # 6 in 2013.

He is not on nor probably will never be on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list since he works so rarely (he’s got a few gaps of 3 years or so between films). These are the actors on the list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan….thanks for the thoughts and lists on Jared Leto. I agree with you….the man is very busy. Good information on his band and their success. I have not heard of them….but it sounds like they have a good following. I also agree…that unless he starts making a bunch of movies…he will never make the list. Jason Patric used to be picky about his roles….today….he seems to only say yes…not matter how low the budget. First list…Angelina Jolie his most frequent co-star…interesting…even though it is only 2 movies. Second list…is small….which was expected. Good stuff as always.

  4. Another workhorse! Actor, singer, songwriter, director Jared certainly has not hung about since his 1992 acting debut. On top of the big screen career covered above he has appeared in 9 TV productions and along with his rock band called “Thirty Seconds to Mars” he has been involved with numerous musical studio albums, music videos EPs and singles.

He has also had a high profile in charity work and campaigning for animal rights. He is a gay rights activist and has actively supported Barack Obama in politics.According to Celebrity Net Worth Jared has accumulated a net worth of $90 million; and IMDB credits him with 50 acting awards and 35 nominations.

I have seen Jared in 7 movies: Switchback; Lord of War; American Psycho; Alexander; Girl Interrupted; Panic Room; and Urban Legend. The latter about a slasher wreaking havoc among female college students at an isolated New England university is given a low rating of 47% above but I moderately enjoyed it.

Also, it did well at the box office for a routine horror movie. In actual terms its budget was $14 million which it all but recouped in its first weekend of release in the US and it went on to gross $73 million worldwide [about $110 million in today’s money]. It was the first time I had ever heard of Jared.

The lovely Alicia Witt [though completely denied Cogerson love above] was Jared’s leading lady in Urban Legend and actually had more screen time than he though he was top billed. She works prominently in TV movies and series these days along with low key cinematic movies and stage work; and has generated a net income of $4 million. I like watching her as she is very easy on the eye.

Bruce has provided some comprehensive additional trivia above and next for Jared are (1) two movies at post-production stage, the action movie Morbius and The Little Things a serial killer thriller co-starring Denzel Washington and Rami Malek and (2) Tron 3 which has been announced (3) 2 untitled projects centring on The Joker from 2016’s Suicide Squad with Margo Robbie as Harley Quinn in one of them. Jared therefore seems to be a guy who is continuing to ‘go places’!

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for the thoughts on Jared Leto…and with a tally count as well. Tally counts: Cogerson 14, Steve 10 and you 7. Wow….$90 million net worth….I guess all those investments in interesting fact #7 have paid off. Thanks for the mini-review of Urban Legend…interesting that it was the movie that got you to notice him in the first place. I think The Little Things has a chance of being a good hit….granted..I have not even seen a trailer yet. Good stuff as always.
