  1. I am really looking forward to his latest movie. I have high hopes for Snowden. As I hope he has one more great movie in him. Another winning page.

    1. Hey Helakoski…..seems that Snowden was getting some Oscar buzz last year….I find it puzzling that this year it is getting a September release…I hope you are right about him having another great movie in him. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Now this is more in my time period. Seems Oliver Stone was the biggest director working when I was growing up. I remember having to beg my mom to see Natural Born Killers. We watched about 10 minutes and she turned it off and I had to wait another 3 or 4 years to see it from beginning to end. Looking at your list I have seen all of the Top 10 with the exception of the 3rd ranked and 8th ranked one. I really enjoyed reading this page. Keep up the good work.

    1. Hey Stein….thanks for sharing the story about Natural Born Killers and your mom. The first 10 minutes of NBK is bad…but nothing compared to the rest of the movie. I think NBK was a little ahead of it’s time. I think if it was released today it would have been a bigger box office hit. So you have not seen Evita or Midnight Express. I have not seen Evita….but Midnight Express is a very well done movie…..but it is a very dark and bleak movie. Not the type of movie that begs for a re-viewing. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Been a fan ever since Salvador. One of my favorite Stone movies is U-Turn. It does not get any respect but I really like it. I have seen it many times and it gets better with each viewing. I like the table, especially how you can move the numbers around. The best I can get U-Turn is in 13th spot. Your thoughts on U-Turn?

    1. Hey Travis….Salvador is a good movie with a great performance from James Woods. Sorry one of your favorites did not get better numbers. I have seen U-Turn….I found it to be pretty interesting…with Sean Penn making a good lead…..but it would not make my Top 10 Oliver Stone movies. Thanks for the comment and the visit.

  4. Forgot to mention, Scarface topping the critics list, I’m a big fan but didn’t the critics hate it at the time? Too violent and all that? maybe they warmed to Scarface over the years. It wasn’t a big hit but has since become one of the cult films of the 1980s, incredibly popular.

Platoon topping the UMR chart, no problem there either, great a film and my favorite of the films he directed.

    1. Hey Steve. I think the critics liked the movie back then….but the violence was shocking back then. Today it would probably get a PG-13 rating. Granted the only critic from the critics back then in my review score was Roger Ebert….who loved it….giving it a 5 star review. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/scarface-1983

Cult following is putting in mildly. My brother is a huge Scarface fan too….every year I seem to find new Tony Montana collectible stuff….from shot glasses to action figures to ash trays to t-shirts to Scarface model cars. My favorite was the Tony Montana Angel for his Christmas tree….nothing says Christmas like a coked up Tony Montana on top of the tree…..lol. The angel part is made up…..the rest really exist.

Hard to argue about Platoon being number one. Along with Paths of Glory…the best anti-war movie ever.

      1. I have a friend who’s a huge Scarface fan, he had a giant Tony Montana movie poster on his wall. He saw it so many times he could quote the entire film, well almost. It’s been a few years since I last saw it, maybe it’s time for another look. Have you done a page on the director, Brian De Palma?

        1. Hey Steve….that sounds like my brother….I wonder which he has seen more…Alien or Scarface….I know he has seen both many many times. Hell I have bought him different versions of the movies for the last 30 plus years….VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, Blu-Ray….seems there is a new device every few years. Brian De Palma would be a good choice for sure….though his career has slowed down even more than Stone’s career.

  5. Oliver “everything’s a conspiracy!” Stone gets ranked and rated. Nice.

He started off so strong – important films, highly rated films, Oscar winning films, box office hits and by the end of the 1990s he started to fade away. What happened? It’s a conspiracy I tells ya!

I’ve seen 20 of the 25 films listed. The five I haven’t seen are – Talk Radio, Heaven and Earth, W. Evita and Seizure.

My favorites are – Scarface, Platoon, Salvador, Wall Street, JFK, NBK, Year of the Dragon and Conan the Librarian.

Born on the Fourth of July was very well made with an Oscar nominated performance from Cruise, but it’s not a film I revisit often, ditto Nixon, The Doors and Midnight Express.

Alexander was a mess, how many directors edits are there? A big flop when it came out, and having the legendary Greek hero lust after Jared Leto instead of Rosario Dawson was never going to help get people lining up to see it.

Looking at the trivia – interesting comparisons between Stone and Spielberg, did not know this.

Another top job Bruce. Peter Jackson next? Voted Up!

    1. Hey Steve.
      1. As always…thanks for the visit and the comment.
      2. I thing you are correct….those evil movie studios know how close Oliver Stone is to the truth…so they won’t let him make any more movies…..oh wait….he has a new one coming out next month.
      3. I agree from Midnight Express to Natural Born Killers….everything he touched turned to box office glory, critical raves and some serious Oscar love. I think father time has more to do with him slowing down than anything else. I wonder how well Snowden will be received.
      4. Tally count: 20 or 80% that might be tough to beat….let me see….counting…22…barely but I will take it. I have not seen Heaven and Earth, Seizure! (actually never even heard of this one before doing this page) and Evita….not a musical or Madonna fan.
      5. Glad to see you mention Year of the Dragon…..that is a 1980s decade movie that is almost completely forgotten….in 1988 I did my Top 50 Movies of All-Time and that one made my list. https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/my-top-50-movies-compiled-in-1988/
      6. I think the only one I did not like among your favorites was NBK…..which is probably past due for a re-watch….maybe I will enjoy it more the next time I watch it.
      7. I think he has about 19 different cuts on Alexander…..lol..seems he and Ridley Scott are trying to set a record for different director cuts…for Scott it is the stuff he does with Blade Runner. I imagine one day Scott will release a version of Blade Runner that shows Ford’s Deckard being made at the replicant factory…lol.
      8. I thought the Stone/Speiberg trivia was pretty cool too.
      🙂

      1. Looking at your 1988 link, aah memories, hey where’s Ben-Hur? 🙂 you mention watching Year of the Dragon only once have you seen it since? I thought it was very underrated, Mickey Rourke was excellent as the racist cop. RIP Michael Cimino.

        1. Nope I have not seen Year of the Dragon in close to 30 years….I wonder how I will feel about the movie when I re-watch it. It is in my opinion Michael Cimino’s 2nd best movie. Sadly his recent passing barely got noticed. I guess only making a few movies the last 40 years tends to help people forget you. Looking at my 1988 list….I have 3 of Stone’s movies on the list….Platoon, Wall Street and Year of the Dragon. Maybe I am a bigger fan of Stone than I thought….thanks for all of the Stone comments.
