  1. I saw 11 including 8 of top 9. 10s and favorites: Chicago, jerry maguire. 9 not favorite: cinderella man, cold mountain. no hidden gems

  2. I found Judy so so. I was never a fan of Judy Garland, she always looked delicate even when she’s young. Fragile might be a better word. I also don’t know why Renee had to have work done, she was cute and unique looking before and now. I think Chicago was a great film. My One and Only, Down with Love and Miss Potter I recommend. The first Bridget Jones was quite good, the follow-ups not so much.

Renee has never been on the infamous Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. These are the actors on the list she has appeared with.

I could never get over Renee and Matthew McConaughey both being in Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks for the mini-review of Judy. I will see that one much later down the road….though I suspect she will get some Oscar and award love for that performance.
      2. I agree with you about her changing looks….she looks so different now….that I actually have a hard time connecting the Renee of 2019 with Renee of 1999. She was very cute in my book…actually had a girlfriend that looked just like her in her Jerry Maguire days.
      3. I am right there with you on Down And Out….it looks and feels like a movie out of the 1950s…which always impressed me…..it is part of my DVD collection…I will have to revisit it.
      4. As always….thanks for putting these trivia lists together….they are actually pretty long for somebody not on the Oracle list.
5 Her Bridget Jones movies are well represented on both attached lists….looks like C. Firth and M. McConaughey are her most frequent co-stars on the first list.
      6. For an actress….27 Oscar winning co-stars seems above average. Once again…thanks for putting this together.

        1. Hey Dan….I was not as impressed with New In Town as you…but I thought it was decent. Thanks for the mini-review.

  3. There are several films that Renee Zellweger made with her then boyfriend Rory Cochrane of CSI:Miami fame: Empire Records, Love and a .45, and The Low Life (the last one I have not yet seen but own the DVD.) I admit that I watched them for Rory Cochrane. He enjoys making independent films and playing a variety of different roles.

I have seen 6 Renee Zellweger movies. I have not yet decided if I will see Judy.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Chicago.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Cold Mountain.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Empire Records.

    Favourite Renee Zellweger Movies:

    Chicago
    Jerry Maguire
    Bridget Jones’s Diary
    Love and a .45

Other Renee Zellweger Movie I Have Seen:

    White Oleander
    Empire Records

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Renée Zellweger and her movies. I did not know she had been in a relationship with Rory C. So thanks for sharing that information with me. Tally count…me 23, Steve 9 and you 6.

As for Judy….I will see it….but it will be when it reaches home entertainment. I am glad it is doing so well at the box office and with reviewers. As for your favorites…I have not seen Love and a .45….but I really like Bridget 1 and Jerry M. I might have seen White Oleander….but can not remember much about it….so I did not include that one in my tally count. Good stuff…your contributions are greatly appreciated.

  4. I have never perceived Renee as a major contemporary star, and she gets no love at all in Bruce’s book or his Top Female legends 1950-2010. However on one other recent list, of 23 favorite actresses, she is ranked 23rd alongside such Greats as Doris Day, Deborah Kerr and Debbie Reynolds among the older actresses and Sandra Bullock among the current ones.

Also Renee of course made a bit of a screen niche for herself with the Dridget Jones films and on the strength of them was able to command $15 million per movie for further projects. Her total net worth now reportedly stands at $63 million and IMDB credits her with 30 acting awards and 73 nominations.

You have given us no overall projected gross for the just-released ‘Judy’ and the opening figure you have quoted for it above doesn’t tell, me anyway, a comprehensive story because its initial release has been in just 461 theatres against 4,200 cinemas enjoyed by the current No 1 film at the UN box office, ‘Abominable’. However in the latest Numbers charts ‘Judy’ has the highest average gross per film among all the films listed: $6,706 against $4,915 for Abominable which has the 2nd highest ave. So fingers crossed for Renee and ‘Judy’ – any thoughts there yourself Teach?

This new page is timely given ‘Judy’s release and certainly Renee has been successful enough to deserve it. The first time I saw her was in Jerry Maguire and as she played the ‘nice girl’ in that one it surprised me when you revealed her strip club history! Anyway her page is “Voted Up”

ADDITIONAL TRIVIA: Sir Michael Gambon plays Bernard The Lord Delfont [Russian born famous British theatrical impresario] in ‘Judy’. A highly respected thespian in his own right, Sir Mike also “walked with Greats” – he has long been a close friend of Sir Maurice Micklewhite, and as well Sir Michael chummed about and dined out with The Great Mumbler when the latter was alive and visiting London. In a recent interview that I saw Sir Mike spoke warmly of his late Mumbling Friend. On those London visits The King of Method was often invited to join the Royals in Royal theatrical boxes. Mr Mumbles and Sir Maurice also got on well together according to the latter.

    1. Hey Bob….I agree with you on Renée Zellweger. She has had a very impressive career…..but she never really became a household name. Sure….she is known as the Bridget Jones girl….but how many know her name. I think part of that issue, is the fact that she pretty much disappeared for a decade. I know she appeared in some low budget supporting roles….and starred in Case 43…a movie that got shelved for a long time and Bridget 3 (a sequel not many paid attention to). However one could argue that Judy is her first major starring role since 2008’s Leatherheads.

I am glad she is getting some major buzz for her performance as Garland. As for the future box office of Judy. So far…it is off to a great start….I suspect that when it expands to 1400 theaters this weekend it will get in the 8 million range for the weekend….but then I suspect it will start to pan out. In the end…I think 30 million is possible….but it might take some serious award love for it to reach any higher than that……we shall see. My basis for this prediction is….that while $6500 per theaters is awesome….it is not an incredible average…movies that people have to see generally average about $10,000 per screen on the first weekend the movie shows.

Good information on our two favorites Caine and Brando…..that would have been a fun dinner conversation to listen to. Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE Thanks for your reply. Excellent summing up of Renee’s career which I totally agree with. YOU are The Master at comprehensively summarizing careers. Of course as the saying goes “It’s all relative.” If one compares Renee with Crawford, Liz Taylor, Streep and Julia Roberts, Renee’s success could be considered modest. However if you consider that she has $63 million of a fortune she is a massive success compared with say B movie/serials actor Larry Buster Crabbe of the classic era

Also the topic reminds me that I have meant to say to you that I am still heavily into, as a source of reference, the Audie Murphy book you kindly sent me. I watched two Murphy reruns the other night [Duel at Silver Creek and Tumbleweed] and consulting your Murphy book I find that of all the actors who appeared in those two films the only one still alive today is supporting actor Eugene Iglesias a Puerto Rican actor who in his prime was fabulously handsome in the ‘Latin Lover’ mode that was so popular in the Hollywood of the 1950s.

In a recent interview he said that all he does nowadays is sit on his front porch and talk to those who wish to speak to him. He emphasized that among the latter were often young girls who simply wanted to see him [as a curiosity piece no doubt] and chat him up. “I’m 93 this Christmas but the ladies STILL want me!” he quipped. In some of his supporting roles he was little more than an extra; but I bet he considers himself to have had one hell of a successful life!

Most important he’s STILL HERE whilst most if not all of the major stars he supported have long since left us. Audie for example didn’t even reach half of Eugene’s age, Murphy dying prematurely in a plane crash at the age of 45. Also according to Celebrity Net Worth Eugene has a bank balance of $1.1 million – maybe that’s what the young ladies are really after!

Anyway thanks a million for your detailed trajectory of the possible box office performance of ‘Judy’, another type of assessment that you’re good at. I hope the school open house went well.

  5. “You had me at hello.” One of the most famous modern film quotes and uttered by Renee in Jerry Maguire.

I’ve seen 9 of the 35 films on the chart. Favorites are – Jerry Maguire, Bridget Jones Diary, Shark Tale and Monsters vs Aliens.

I watched Cold Mountain once a long time ago but can’t remember it much.

Chicago had some good numbers and the two girls were great but I’m more of a fan of classic musicals.

Bridget Jones Diary made me laugh and I have a nostalgic fondness for that film, not that keen on the sequels.

I may have seen Nurse Betty, can’t remember for sure.

Hmm Jerry Maguire was a pretty big hit at the world wide box office. Thanks to Tom Cruise – the last great movie star, as some have dubbed him.

    Nice work Bruce, Vote Up!

    1. “The greatest movie star ever! One hundred years from now when the rest of us are long forgotten they’ll still be watching Tom Cruise’s films.” -Clint Eastwood’s recent comments about Tom’s legacy

      1. Hey Bob…pretty sure…they will still be talking about Clint in 2129. Good information on Cruise from Clint.

        1. HI BRUCE-Thanks for your reply. You may well be right but as my Doris sang in the film [which was maybe about Joel] 1956’s The Man Who Knew Too Much co-starring my Jimmy –

          “Que Sera, Sera
          Whatever will be will be
The Future’s not ours to See.” For example:

1/Possibly the 5 greatest stars of the silent era were Chaplin, Pickford, Keaton, Gish and Doug Fairbanks Senior. Only the first 4 of those among ALL silent stars made the cut for AFI’s 50 greatest legends lists.

2/None of the 5 were in your own Top 50 listed in your book and only Bank of America’s Sweetheart [as Chaplin scathingly nicknamed Little Mary whom he hated because she wouldn’t let him prey on young girls at her high society parties] is honorably- mentioned on page 16 of that book.

3/You will recall my mentioning that some 40 years ago only half of the students attending American universities among those questioned in a survey knew who Gable was – and he was about as big as we’ve ever had in movies.

4/My daughter and her husband are in their early 40s and if I mention to them the likes of Gary Cooper or Golden Holden, they look at me blankly – “Myrna WHO?”

5/Whilst specialists like film historians, critics and movie buffs such as you and Hirsch will probably be familiar with every mega star who ever existed in the cinema, the only great silent star whom I hear mentioned even occasionally today by the Man in the Street is Chaplin. But most of even those who have heard of him wouldn’t go to see re-runs his films: guys slinging endless custard pies at each other are highly dated movie fare nowadays.

NB: With the possible exception of The Duke [“THE screen American”!] among the great stars of the 1930s and 1940s Astaire’s is the name that I still hear most frequently mentioned. That is possibly because dancing will always be a popular pastime and possibly Fred’s legend has been perpetuated by his reputation as THE screen dancer – ie he was known for artistry that people today can still personally relate to. Ginger gets a mention only in respect of being Fred’s partner – and she used to complain about that in her final years – but at least she IS mentioned from time to time.

          1. Hey Bob….good comment. Lots of great information in numbers 1 through 5. I agree with almost all of what you wrote (I know I am surprised too). I have a John Wayne figure in my classroom….and numerous students ask who “that cowboy is”….and when I tell them….I get blank looks…..so even the Duke has become forgotten in time by the younger generation. To them…Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are the old guys and people like Cole Sprouse are the new superstars. “Que Sera, Sera”….one of the Day classics. Good stuff as always.

    2. Hey Steve….thanks for the thoughts on Renée Zellweger and her movies. I agree “You had me at hello”…is one of the most famous modern film quotes…but probably behind another from the same movie…”Show me the money.”. Tally count ..I have seen 23 of her movies…you are at 9….Flora is at 6. I like all of your favorites with Bridget 1, Jerry M. and Down With Love being my favorites. I am right there with you on Cold Mountain. I have seen….I know many consider it great…but it was just ok in my book. Jerry M. was indeed massive all through the world. Good stuff as always.
