Thankfully we get lots of requests for new pages. Well…the wife recently informed me that my way of collecting my requests was pretty weak. She seems to think that writing down requests on whatever piece of paper or napkin or bill that is currently on my desk is not the way to do it. So….since she is way smarter than me….I have decided to create a page just for requests. Plus it should give a good idea of what pages are coming down the pike.
My logic in picking which page to do next….I lean heavily towards the subject that has the most requests.

Hi Mr. Cogerson,
How good was Variety as a tool for Box Office data.
I have done about all I can do for the review of Variety data versus UMR 1932 original box office
data.
I reviewed a total of 90 movies for the year of 1932.
The number of movies from the 5 major studios were as follows with percentage:
1.MGM- 22 movies-Variety was able to reflect 27 % of the total data.
2.Paramount- 13 movies-Variety was able to reflect 23 % of the total data.
3.Warner- 35 movies-Variety was able to reflect 31 % of the total data.
4.RKO- 14 movies-Variety was able to reflect 30 % of the total data.
5.Fox-no movies
The number of movies from the 3 minor studios were as follows with percentage:
Considered B level movies.
1.Columbia-6 movies-Variety was able to reflect 18 % of the total data
2.Universal-no movies
3.United Artists-no movies
The data of all 90 movies combined was 26%. of the total combined gross of the movies from the 1932 UMR data.
There is the following number of movies making at least $100,000 or more missing from your 1932 table from these studios.
1.RKO = 17 movies
2.United Artists = 4 movies
3.Universal= 13 movies
4.Warner-13 movies
5. Paramount 29 movies
6.MGM- 7 movies
7. Fox-37 movies
8. Columbia-11 movies
9.Others-11 movies
Please review and let me know what you might need
Hey Mike….as always….great research. This is truly impressive…..and numbers that are not available anywhere. You might consider starting up your place to list this information. You should get a financial reward for your efforts versus a “atta boy” from me. Not surprised at all that Paramount has so many movies……that is by far the weakest studio in my database…..even the Paramount books I own offer up little with regards to box office. Great information.
Sadly my time is so limited these days with work and personal issues that UMR has taken a back seat. This year I teach 7 classes a day with no planning period….I was hoping my numbers would dwindle so that next year I would go back down to 6 classes…..but they talked to me the other day about having 7 classes again in 2021-22. The bad part of being such an awesome teacher…..the kids want to be in my elective class….lol.
Thanks for replying
Glad you like the info.
No I just did it to support your website only.
I will send you what I have and maybe someday you can use it.
Until then I will move on to another year.
Please make a list on all-time China adjusted box-office. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films_in_China. Scroll down to ‘highest grossing films by year’. According to the list, the biggest ticket seller, In-Laws (Full House of Joy), sold just under 450 million tickets.
And add Chinese movies to this page https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/all-time-top-worldwide-box-office-grosses-movies/.
The Chinese movie ‘Shaolin Temple’ sold 300 million tickets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaolin_Temple_(1982_film). According to the Wikipedia page of the movie, it made an adjusted revenue of $1.45 billion.
Then ‘In-Laws’s revenue would be over $2 billion.
If the information is correct, then I don’t understand why Chinese movies haven’t been included on the UMR page of worldwide boxoffice.
And can you do the same for Indian movies? The Wikipedia page, on China, also gives big numbers on some Indian movies.
Although I don’t understand the Wikipedia page on ‘Shaolin Temple’. It says that the movie’s adjusted revenue, with 300 million tickets sold, would be $1.45 billion, in 2017. The average American ticket price was about $9, in 2017. So that would come to an adjusted revenue of $2.7 billion, in 2017.
‘In-Laws’ sold about 470 million tickets, if that amount is China only, and it didn’t sell more tickets outside of China. Which would mean that ‘In-Laws’, in 2021, (according to this page https://www.the-numbers.com/market/ the same ticket price as 2019) would make $9.16 x 470.000.000 = $4.305.200.000. According to this calculation it would have a bigger adjusted revenue than Titanic, and therefore would be the number one box-office hit of all time.
Can you tell how much profit a studio itself makes on movies in a single year, so the studios’ cut vs. the total studios’ investment?
These are a few pages on costs and profits I’ve found.
https://io9.gizmodo.com/how-much-money-does-a-movie-need-to-make-to-be-profitab-5747305
https://stephenfollows.com/hollywood-movies-make-a-profit/
https://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/110389/how-much-of-the-box-office-amount-does-the-studio-get
How about 20th Century Fox’s profit of a recent year, 2019, 2018, 2017, etc.? Which movies did the studio itself make the biggest profits and biggest losses, and did they make profit or loss in total?
Hey jordy……wow…..another great suggestion……we have lots of information here at UMR…..but nothing really with regards to profit by studio. We do have some ledger information that shows how much a movie made….and it seems that some of my older movie books have some stats on studios……but anything current…..we have no information on that. Usually the movie studio books are so mixed up they never really tell the truth. Like the story that Coming To America, was a huge hit….yet according to the studio it actually lost money. I will see what I can dig up. It is a good idea.
Wow… that’s just…. wow. https://forward.com/culture/465247/art-buchwald-coming-2-america-eddie-murphy-john-landis-lawsuit-king-for-a/
‘they could make more money with a hit by pretending it was a flop.’ The story was not theirs, so they got sued for it. I understand you’re saying this movie made anything but loss. Only the judge didn’t think so, for whatever reason Paramount came up with
Can you make a ‘top rated movies by women and men’ list? So a list that averages the score from both women and men. The top movies on Imdb are all male dominated, because the majority of votes are from males. I’d like to see a list that averages the score from both the genders, so just the rating, without counting the amount of votes.
Yes, sure, there are very probably movies with too few votes to make it to any top list, including the Imdb top 250, but I would like to see a list with all the big timers.
This might help https://www.imdb.com/imdbpicks/top-200-movies-rated-by-women-on-imdb/ls023589784/
Hey jordy……interesting idea……not sure how we could come up with a way to provide the information you are seeking. We do have a table of stars ranked by average UMR score. That can be separated by actress and actors.
Hi Mr. Cogerson,
1.Where does the 1932 domestic box office data come from?
2. Is it rounded up or down?
3. Some of my box office data is already equal or better than which you have.
Most are only 10 % to 40 % of what is in the domestic box office.
My question is I’m trying to understand the fluctuation.
Do you have any ideas?
Please review and advise
Thx
