Requests

requests1

Thankfully we get lots of requests for new pages.  Well…the wife recently informed me that my way of collecting my requests was pretty weak.  She seems to think that writing down requests on whatever piece of paper or napkin or bill that is currently on my desk is not the way to do it.  So….since she is way smarter than me….I have decided to create a page just for requests.  Plus it should give a good idea of what pages are coming down the pike.

My logic in picking which page to do next….I lean heavily towards the subject that has the most requests.

  • Roger Corman – request by Dan
  • Peter Cushing – request made by SteveLensman, Dan & Brando 90
  • Disney Live Action 1967-1980 – request by Mimic
  • Foreign Movies requested by Laurent
  • Samuel Goldwyn – request by Dan
  • Sam Katzman – request by Dan
  • Fritz Lang – request by Lupino, Just Me
  • Bruce Lee – request by Brando 90
  • Harold Lloyd – request by Søren, Me
  • Henry Mancini – request by Flora
  • Patricia Medina – request by Dan
  • Mirisch Brothers – request by Dan
  • Edward Small – request by Dan
  • Rudolph Valentino – request by Laurent

Completed requests:

Many more to come…have to find all of my old napkins and transfer the requests to this page.

  1. Now that I am making some headway in back comments I thought I would make some requests about classic artists.

have been looking over the list of top women on the AFI list and though some may be difficult to find data eg. Lillian Gish), others I’m surprised you have not done.

So classic actresses as well as actors I’m requesting are Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Carol lombard, Vivian Leigh, Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles.

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for all the suggestions…..I will make sure the next classic page is one of the actresses you listed. I have been looking at Vivien Leigh….she does not really have many movies. I will be adding your suggestions to the list above.

  2. Hello Bruce.
Thank’s for trying. I didn’t even have the film budgets before. By the way the budget for The Ruling Class was $1.5m.

    1. Thanks for the budget stuff on The Ruling Class…..seems like The Ruling Class would be very close to how Murphy’s War performed. It is time to do another classic movie page….trying to figure out who to do….yesterday your comment got me motivated to do Peter O’Toole next…..but the reality of how difficult it is going to do a O’Toole page registered as I tried and track down the 3 movies you mentioned.

  3. Hello Bruce.
A while back you said you were going to do a Peter O’Toole page but decided not to
because he did so many bad movies. I agree he did do quite a few bad movies but still I was wondering if you had any box office information on these three films he did. “The Ruling Class” (1972), “Murphy’s War” (1971) and “Goodbye Mr. Chips” (1969). O’Toole was nominated for best actor in both Goodbye Mr. Chips and The Ruling Class (one of my favorite O’Toole films). I’m pretty sure all three films flopped at the box office but I’ve always been curious as to how bad they flopped. O’Toole said himself that Goodbye Mr. Chips nearly bankrupted the studio that release it and he also said that The Ruling Class made no money. But I paid twice to see The Ruling Class and the theater wasn’t empty. Any information you might have would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Hey Lyle….I probably need to go back and rethink that decision and do a page on 8 time nominee O’Toole…..but until then I can see what I have on those three movies….and my results….not much to report on my main sources. Variety does not list any of the three movies in their yearly issues. Goodbye Mr. Chips had a budget of 9 million…..Murphy’s War had a budget of 1.4 million. So if neither of the three reached 1 million in rentals they the most they could have done would be 999,999 in rentals.

So using that logic….Goodbye Mr. Chips would have cost $58.02 million in 2015 money and only returned a max domestic gross of 12.2 million…plus the studio would only get back about 60% of that gross or $7.32 million…..for a loss of $50.00 million plus….for the studio.

Meanwhile things would be better for Murphy’s War as it would only cost $8.17 million in 2015 money…and could have grossed $10.60 million…..and gotten back $6.36 million…so it’s loss would be less than 2 million….which probably would not sink the studio…..plus that does not include worldwide box office.

Since my better sources have failed….I would have to find some O’Toole biographies….or check the studio books that are out there I think the difficulty in finding these three movies is another reason why I gave up doing an O’Toole page…plus two of these movies are Oscar nominated performances by him…sorry I could not be more help.

    1. Mr. Scott is on the list….plus he has been requested one than once….which means he will be done before some of the movie subjects that have only been mentioned once….thanks for the suggestion
