Requests

requests1

Thankfully we get lots of requests for new pages.  Well…the wife recently informed me that my way of collecting my requests was pretty weak.  She seems to think that writing down requests on whatever piece of paper or napkin or bill that is currently on my desk is not the way to do it.  So….since she is way smarter than me….I have decided to create a page just for requests.  Plus it should give a good idea of what pages are coming down the pike.

My logic in picking which page to do next….I lean heavily towards the subject that has the most requests.

  • Roger Corman – request by Dan
  • Peter Cushing – request made by SteveLensman, Dan & Brando 90
  • Disney Live Action 1967-1980 – request by Mimic
  • Foreign Movies requested by Laurent
  • Samuel Goldwyn – request by Dan
  • Sam Katzman – request by Dan
  • Fritz Lang – request by Lupino, Just Me
  • Bruce Lee – request by Brando 90
  • Harold Lloyd – request by Søren, Me
  • Henry Mancini – request by Flora
  • Patricia Medina – request by Dan
  • Mirisch Brothers – request by Dan
  • Edward Small – request by Dan
  • Rudolph Valentino – request by Laurent

Completed requests:

Many more to come…have to find all of my old napkins and transfer the requests to this page.

  1. Audie Murphy
Fredric March (won 2 best actors)
    Joel McCrea
    Alice Faye
Betty Grable (the top female box office star of the 40’s)
    Tyler Perry
Eric Roberts (the #1 most connected actor on the Oracle of Bacon). Other former #1’s were Harvey Keitel, Dennis Hopper, Rod Steiger and Christopher Lee.
Movies filmed in Cinerama. A number of those travelogue films were among the highest grossing pictures in calendar years (This is Cinerama, Cinerama Holiday, Seven Wonders of the World) culminating in 70mm road show films of the late 60’s & early 70’s . The last 3 road shows were in 1972 I believe, Young Winston, The Great Waltz and Man of La Mancha.

Did you ever notice on the IMDB that they seem to know the box office for a lot of old pictures for Spain (including lots of forgotten horror and western films) but there is no specific website for Spain.

    1. Hey Dan…..I will add all of your suggestions into the list of pages to do. I have seen that IMDb list Spain’s box office admissions. When I am researching box office grosses….I stumble across those many many times…and they offer no help what so ever. I wonder ..like you do….where and who is posting that information?

  2. Hi

Your list is so long that I feel bad asking you to add even more onto it. But I was watching Little Foxes and Doddsworth the other day and I realised that they were directed by William Wyler. He has left such an incredible body of work, Ben Hurr, Best Years of our Lives and Roman Holiday, that he surely is worth a page.

    1. Hey Chris…William Wyler is a great suggestion. I have never really understood why his career rarely gets mentioned when you read about great directors….Ford, Hawks, Hitchcock…always get mentioned….but rarely does Wyler ever get mentioned….his 12 Best Director Oscar nominations are the most ever….I gladly include him on the request list. Thanks again for the suggestion.

      1. Hi

I think I know what you mean. When you think of Hitchcock, you think of suspense, Ford, Westerns. I think Wyler was more an actor’s director. Bearing in mind so many stars won Oscars through his direction. But a great director all the same and definitely worth a page.

        1. Hey Chris….I agree with you 100%….now I just have to find the time to do a Wyler page….I do know that his Best Years of Our Lives and Ben-Hur will be one two in my rankings….as both of the movies are in my Top 10 Ultimate Movie Score …and that is out of 23,000 plus movies. Wyler and David Lean both have two movies in that Top 10.

  3. Hello Bruce. You once suggested that you might do pages for other years such as you’ve done for 1939 and 1946. And I think that’s a great Idea. And you’ve really got me curious about those many films that tied for 42nd place along with 1943’s “The More the Merrier”. And I was wondering if “The Constant Nymph” was one of the films that tied for 42nd Place. The Constant Nymph is one of those films I recently saw for the first time and I’ve never been a fan of Joan Fontaine or of tearjerkers but this film and Joan’s performance really moved me. Charles Coburn was in this one too and he is really good in this one as well. Charles Boyer and Alexis Smith were very good as well. Thanks again Bruce.

    1. Hey Lyle…doing more yearly reviews is going to happen…just not sure when that will finally get done. The Constant Nymph is right above The More the Merrier with 1.9 million in box office rentals according to Variety. It was Warner Brother’s 10th biggest hit of 1943…and the William Schaefer ledgers have it at 1.833 million in domestic rentals and 1.619 in foreign earnings…or 3.452 million rentals in world wide box office rentals.

The ones The More The Merrier tied with are Andy Hardy’s Double Life, Bataan, Lady of Burlesque, In Which We Serve, Flesh and Fantasy, and Arabian Nights.

I have not seen The Constant Nymph but I will add it to my list of movies to watch….thanks for the revisit.

  4. Hello Bruce.
Thanks a lot for the Box Office information on “The More the Merrier”. I wasn’t sure it was on any list available. It is much appreciated. Thank’s again, Bruce.

    1. Hey Lyle….One day I will be doing a movie page that ranks all of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar winners….The More The Merrier will make that list as Charles Coburn won his Oscar for that one. I think Cary Grant was hoping he would win an Oscar when he took over Coburn’s role in the remake Walk Don’t Run. Sadly it did not work out for Cary…..as everybody wanted Grant to get the girl versus Jim Hutton. Not thinking many people were hoping Jean Arthur would end up with Coburn in The More The Merrier. Glad my information was helpful.

  5. Hello Bruce. I checked out your Marx Brothers Page and You Viven Leigh Page and I’m glad you did them because I have never have any box office Information on The Marx Brothers Movies nor the earlier films of Vivien Leigh. I Have been wondering if you could help me out with any box office information on 1943’s “The More the Merrier”. I have read that it was one of Columbia Studios biggest hits and it is one of my favorite films of all time. So I was wondering if it is on one of Variety’s Top Rental Films List. Probably not because I can find no information on the film except the film budget. Please let me know if you have it on one of your lists. I love your website. I have always been a film fanatic. Thanks Bruce.

    1. Hey Lyle….thanks for checking out my Marx Brothers and Vivien Leigh pages. Let’s see…..what I have on The More The Merrier? Variety January 5th 1944….The More The Merrier is listed as Columbia’s 2nd biggest hit of the year with box office rentals of $1.80 million or $3.96 million in box office grosses in 1943 and $107.16 million in 2015 grosses….or about what 300: Rise of an Empire earned last year.

It is tied with many movies for 42nd place in 1943. Bogart’s Sahara was Columbia’s biggest hit in 1943. Hope that helps…..and thanks for the nice words about my website.
