3.  Roddy McDowall was lifelong friends with Elizabeth Taylor. They both starred in 1943’s Lassie Come Home. Taylor referred to him as the one friend she had to whom she confided everything, and who was always understanding.

4.  Roddy McDowall was never nominated for an Oscar®.  He did receive a Best Supporting Golden Globe® nomination for 1963’s Cleopatra.

5.  A clerical error on the part of 20th Century-Fox cost Roddy McDowall a likely Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Caesar Augustus Octavian in 1963’s Cleopatra. The studio erroneously listed him as a leading player rather than a supporting one. When 20th Century-Fox asked the Academy to correct the error, it refused, saying the ballots already were at the printer.

7.  In 1974, the FBI raided Roddy McDowall’s home and seized his collection of films and television series in the course of an investigation into film piracy and copyright infringement. His collection consisted of 160 16-mm prints and more than 1,000 video cassettes, at a time before the era of commercial videotapes, when there was no legal aftermarket for films. McDowall had purchased Errol Flynn’s home cinema films and transferred them all to tape for longer-lasting archival storage. No charges were filed.

8.  Roddy McDowall played the chimpanzee archaeologist Cornelius in 4 of the first 5 Planet of the Apes movies. He did not appear in 1970’s Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

9.  Roddy McDowall liked wearing his Planet of the Apes makeup when he left the set.  He would drive home with his make-up on, and shock some of the other drivers on the freeway.   That would be worth seeing.

  1. Hello 🙂
I have seen 28 movies featuring “Master” Roddie McDowall- many of them he made when the “Master” had long been deleted from his name. I absolutely love How green was my Valley, but as a kid Lassie and Flicka sure were my favorites. The Keys of the Kingdom, White Cliffs of Dover and Shock Treatment are also high on my list. Of his later films, I think Overboard is very funny, and although I prefer the original 40’s B film, I did enjoy Dead of Winter. Another fav is the original Planet of the Apes movie, but the further that series went, the less I liked the movies. Being a longtime Streisand fan, I have to admit that Funny Lady does not rank very high among my favorite movies. Interesting for containing Monty Clift’s last performance, this is also true for The Defector. As I stated elsewhere, Angel, Angel down we go is horrible despite the presence of Roddie and Jennifer Jones. An interesting look at the career of a former child star, who kept busy throughout his life, although mainly in supporting parts.

    1. Hey Bob.
This is a crazy week at the Cogerson house. Son #2 and recently back from Dublin and England is home for a few days, turned 25 yesterday. Tomorrow is granddaughter #1’s 10th birthday. Thursday is WoC and my anniversary. And then on Friday it is daughter #2’s 11th birthday. We are scheduled to take 14 pre teen girls to see The Emoji Movie….I guess they have not been reading the reviews…lol. This morning I had some time, but watched The Greatest Story Ever Told for the first time…that puppy is almost 3 and a half hours long. So in a nutshell……UMR might be put on the back burner for awhile. I did do a Shepard tribute page and a new banner….patting myself on back.

      1. HI BRUCE

1 Some activity commitments! Hectic though they are but you can’t complain about not leading a full life and at some stage you’ll be able to look back say as Fred Astaire is supposed to have said seconds before he passed away “I’ve had a good life and am well contented.”

2 Oh I hate it when people remind me of Greatest Story because even normally Wayne-friendly critics crucified him for that one – so please don’t tell me what Hirsch thought of it !

  2. Hi Bruce, thanks for this comprehensive page of Roddy McDowall’s films and the interesting bits of information about him. As a kid, when I saw the Planet of the Apes films, I wondered who was this Roddy behind the mask and it took me a while to identify him as there was no internet in these days and, as an adult, he was always in a supporting role.

I agree with others who think How Green Was My Valley is a wonderful film and maybe Roddy’s greatest moment in human form. While he was an adorable child actor, when he came back to the big screen as an adult, he seemed to often be typecast as a villain until he put on a chimpanzee suit and became nice again…though not quite as cute 😉

I recently saw the little known thriller, Shock Treatment, with Stuart Whitman, Lauren Bacall and Roddy McDowall quite frightening as a deranged killer. I also saw him in the Columbo episode Bob mentions, where he was very effectively annoying. But Roddy could take on all kinds of other roles when given the chance, and as your page shows, he left behind an impressive body of work.

On a separate note, this page made me notice how low a critical rating Cleopatra gets! 47.33%? OK, it was an overblown, pompous mess, but it has some good moments. The IMDB rating is now 7.0, which on the other hand, seems too high.

  3. Hi

Roddy’s career lasted so incredibly long that I think almost everybody has seen him in something. I remember later in his career playing the small role of the Vicar in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. In the 80’s there was a television movie about the life of May West and he played a stage hand. He was absolutely superb in How Green Was My Valley. And of course the Lassie movie. He was definitely one of the best child stars around. But I suppose his finest hour was in the Planet of the Apes movies.
He had a very distinct voice, I’m surprised he didn’t become a bigger star than he was. It’s nice to know that he had a genuine friendship with Elizabeth Taylor. So many of these showbiz friendships are so fake.
I remember Kevin Costner speaking at the funeral of Whitney Houston. I had assumed then that they were close friends. But no it was because they had made a movie about 20 years before.
Anthony Quinn related a story of how he worked with Lawrence Olivier. After the film had ended, they were getting a taxi to the airport, both were in tears hugging and crying and after that they never met again.
Anyway I recently watched How Green was my Valley, it’s such a wonderful film. And to be honest, far more enjoyable than Citizen Kane. Great page, thanks.

In 1969 my mother took me to a double feature of G rated movies, Hello Down There featuring Roddy and the epic My Side of the Mountain. The theater threw in a sneak review of an M or GP film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie which featured Pamela Franklin appearing topless while she was being painted. It was the first nude scene I ever saw in a film.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As always…thanks for these lists which are jammed packed with tons of facts and trivia.
      2. Yep….both he and Orson have tumbled since the 2000 list.
      3. Looks like he will be attached to the lists for awhile….heck Eric Roberts alone should be a nice lifeline for Roddy for many years.
      4. 49 Oscar winners is an excellent total….and one of the highest totals in your comments in awhile.
      5. Good memory of your double feature….your Prime of Miss Jean Brodie reminds me of my first nude scene…..it was Sondra Locke in Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet.
      Good comment as always.

      1. My first R rated movie was Bluebeard with Richard Burton. MY first C or condemned movie by the Catholic Board was Bananas with Woody Allen.
