    1. Dan, amazing stats . Thanks. about thirty percent of her oscar winning co-stars came from 3 movies: the last action hero, the quick and the dead, antz.

    2. Hey Dan. Good lists as always. So Sharon Stone has a spot in the Top 250. I would not have guessed that at all. Maybe in the late 1990s….but seems the last 20 years have really slowed up for her. Looking at the first list, Woody Allen has the bragging rights for most frequent Oracle co-star. Not thinking I would have ever guessed that. 34 Oscar winning co-stars is more than I would have guessed. I guess in the end, her entire movie career has surprised me. Your lists have opened my eyes..so thank you for that.

  2. 1/INTERVIEWER: “Victor did you really fight that lion with your bear hands in Samson and Angela or did they use a stunt man?”

VICTOR MATURE: “No. The lion was real – but it was an old beast who had lost most of its teeth!”

2/INTERVIEWER: Your fans will maybe remember you most for that deep-fathom underwater fight you had with an octopus in your role as Captain Silver in the 1947 serial The Sea Hound. Was it a real octopus?

LARRY ‘BUSTER’ CRABBE: “It was an artificial rubber contraption” [Crabbe replied and breaking into a laugh he added] “Actually it kept drifting away from me and I continually had to pull its tentacles back and covertly wrap them around me to provide the illusion that it was attacking me. Oh and by the way those scenes weren’t shot in a real ocean but in a studio tank and the entire crew and my leading lady [Pamela Blake] stood around the tank laughing their legs off at my antics with the octopus! Ironic to think that those particular scenes allegedly half-terrified so many people in the cinemas.

ADDITIONAL TRIVIA: In terms of acting ability AND box office performance the two action heroes whom I most associate with each other are Steven and Jean-Claude. Bruce’s comprehensive stats tables for the two stars would seem to support my contention. These are their Cogerson-adjusted domestic grosses:

    Van Damme: $1.15 billion – 24 movies/average $48 million approx
    Seagal: $1.05 billion – 13 movies/average around $80 million

The Work Horse’s stats go on to demonstrate that for example Stallone’s 8 Rocky/Rocky-related movies ALONE almost equalled that combined Van Damme/Segal total of $2.2 billion. Bruce’s adjusted overall domestic gross for those 8 ‘Rockies’ is nearly $1.9 billion [average around $235 million] so that in terms of stardom Jean Claude and Steven are not in the same league as the top action heroes like Sly.

  3. HI BOB COX: As unlike STEVE I do step outside my comfort zone once in a while I WILL take your advice and try to catch Above the Law. I have watched a few of Seagal’s movies and found them rather repetitive though some are mildly entertaining; and on balance as an ACTION HERO I prefer him to Sly and Jace.

As I’ve said before Stallone is too relatively puny for my money to be convincing as a guy who can single-handedly “save the world” and floor Ivan Drago; whereas standing at 6ft 4inches and being heavily built Seagal at least LOOKS as if he could whup the a** of100 baddies with one blow of his fist and be bulletproof. See also Part 2.

However in fairness to Sly (1) he HAS been enormously popular and in his heyday genuinely pulled his weight at the box office [again see Part 2] which many in the movie business believe is the TRUE MEASURE of a star. I have run marathons all over Northern Ireland in my day including racing up and down steps but nobody has tried to mimic me!

    (2) I do like Stallone as a person because from what I have read about him his heart is in the right place and in the end that’s more important in my book than being a great actor; I don’t buy into the school of thought that believes that a thespian’s talent excuses anti-social and even pugilistic behaviour towards one’s fellow man.

    (3) I have referred at times to my own perception of Stallone’s rather wooden [almost sleepy] acting style. However there I was perhaps unwittingly being a bit unfair as I gather that his mother had mega-physical difficulty in giving birth to him so that his at times seeming somnolence is partly due to one side of his face being permanently immobilised to an extent as a consequence of his delivery from the womb. Whilst medically that is sad movie historians have felt that it stood him in good stead in projecting that “strong-silent” persona that he does well and that has made him a top star.

    1. The Bob, as the number one fan for alan ladd that i know of, i am amazed that height is considered in your measure of an action hero. Alan may rollover in his prolonged premature slumber. this is all good fun but please spare yourself, my advice on watching any Seagal movie was ironic/moronic . great stuff on sly. nice comparison on sly, van Damme, Seagal.
what changed my movie watching variety and enjoyment was targeting highly ranked UMR movies. what an improvement it made for me , i started before i realized Cogerson was under the influence of Joel. now, i can’t stop. alas i too am affected by Joel his reach spreads like a fog. penetrating , sinister, while often unnoticed, too dense to be comprehended. Yea Bob, Yea Joel, Yea Cogerson, Yea UMR .

      1. HI BOB COX: Thanks for your response. Always nice hearing from you. My further comments are:

1/Sadly Ladd was “put down” all his career because of his short stature. Ironically though of the smallish mega stars who were the main screen “tough guys” in the Hollywood classic era – others include Cagney/Bogie/Robinson/Raft – Laddie was the only one who did have a reasonable claim to at least SOME physical skills in his prime.

2/ He was actually a champion athlete at college and became a lifeguard for a while before he got into movies. Yet he was the one who was always scoffed at for not being tall whilst it was rarely or never mentioned in the case of the other 4 whom I have listed.

3/Raft of course in real life didn’t need to be personally tough as he apparently kept company with some very dangerous people. I’ve mentioned before on this site that Bacall’s father is supposed to have sadly said to a guest as Lauren and Humphrey were speeding away from the wedding reception on their honeymoon “With the awful physical shape he’s in Bogie should be going to the funeral parlour and not the honeymoon suite!”

4/I liked Ladd because of his quiet personality [and I liked Bronson for the same reason] and I was prepared to give Laddie some “poetic licence” as a screen tough guy so that I could enjoy his low-key persona. For me Stallone the Rock etc have no personality but as always I speak just for myself.

        1. 5/Laddie maybe would have been better though if he could have played more gangster roles such as Raven in This Gun for Hire. Gangsters don’t have to be big because they have guns and are prepared to use them; or like Raft and allegedly Sinatra they have “friends” whom you wouldn’t want to cross.

6/A couple of years ago I watched a documentary which showed a selection of the supposed “most frightening” clips from movies. Carrie and The Exorcist were included and so course Mother Bates from Psycho was on the rampage. Also included though as almost a curio – an ‘odd man out’ – was a scene from This Gun for Hire with Ladd’s hit man Philip Raven creeping up a dark back stairway with gun at the ready to assassinate some poor soul.

7/The young villainous Ladd with his trademark icy stare and a gun to back him up could be as menacing as anyone on screen so as I say he maybe should have done more bad guys. But let’s be honest here: if you had to choose in real life to go into the ring with the 5ft 9 inches ‘pretty boy’ Stallone OR the massive 6ft 5inces Ivan Drago whom would YOU pick? If you select Drago as your opponent then as they saying goes – I’ll hold your coat!

8/So you like me feel you have been inflicted with The Curse of Joel. I am reminded of the 1957 horror classic Night of the Demon starring Dana Andrews. In that the only way in which anyone ultimately can escape the Demon’s clutches is by passing the curse onto someone else. Did it ever therefore occur to you that The Work Horse is relaxed about continually quoting Hirschhorn to his viewers because Bruce no longer experiences the torment that you and I do as he has passed onto us poor saps The Curse of Joel?

          1. the Bob, it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the fight in the dog. darn it, i am 6’4″ 275 pounds, a second row push and jumped line outs in college rugby. i no longer want to fight anyone or anything. especially the covid19. it has severely curtailed my looting activities. LOL. leaves more time for me to enjoy those inspired by the “curse of Joel”.

          1. HI BOB

Thanks for sharing that information. I hadn’t known it.

I don’t see Clint as your normal action hero as he can turn in sensitive performances such as in Million Dollar Baby; can do westerns; and has a far stronger personality than Sly/The Rock/Statham in my estimation.

Plus of course Clint has also great skills as a director and in that capacity he has provided us with many intelligent and theoughtful movies wheter he has personally appeared in them or not.

The only two movies of his that I have never wanted to see are the Clyde ones though they were enromously popular with other moviegoers and Steve for exampleloves them. Anyway great exchannging views with you Bob – please keep safe.

    2. Hey Bob. Good breakdowns on Stallone, Ladd, Seagal, the Mature quotes and others. So I am reading between the lines that you are putting Sharon Stone in the same category as Mature and Stallone?

      1. HI BIG BOY. : Thanks for the feedback. No: I don’t think Sharon can compare with Sly and Vic. Stallone has been as you would express it “a beast at the box office” over many years; and Big Vic whilst not in the same league as Sly in terms of popular appeal nevertheless had a steady respectable following and contributed to a reasonable number of hit films in his time.

Sharon on the other hand was virtually a “one hit wonder” and as your own stats make crystal clear her overall box office record is pretty dismal at least in relation to the hype she once enjoyed.

I have just finished watching Randy Scott in 1955’s Ten Wanted Men and as usual the almost-60 years of age Randy did his “young man” act. His relative ‘child bride’ this time was Jocelyn Brando almost a quarter of a century younger than Randy in the movie.

However even if Randolph had been in the prime of youth it would probably not have impressed Miss Brando who of course grew up beside a human dynamo akin to yourself!

You give Ten Wanted Men just a 57% review rating but whilst it was rather routine it was passably enjoyable for me. as I like Scott. Jocelyn still patiently awaits her Cogerson page; but meantime you DO give her credit on Randy’s page for her 10 Wanted Men leading lady role.

Anyway keep safe and don’t let all your qualifications go to your head. One Joel on this site is enough! Sincerest congratulations however; though it does seem from what you say that your spammer pals were following you around even into your educational studies! PS:I love the little iconic miniature still above of Sharon on set of Quick and Dead.

  4. 1/Sharon Stone’s last movie [Antz] of her 5 overall that crashed the Cogerson $100 million barrier was 22 years ago way back in 1998 and was a voice only role. All her movies outside that top 5 have an overall adjusted domestic gross of just under $ 1 billion which converts to a paltry average of around $20 million per movie.

2/Worse: the 19 or so movies that she has made in the last 20 years have a total adjusted domestic gross of approx $185 million which is an average of around $10 million per movie. Accordingly in my book the stardom that once did exist for her rested more on hype than the guaranteed capacity to open a movie at the box office.

3/However such considerations have not stopped her accumulating a reported net worth of $60 million; and under today’s inflated systems for showering all kinds of awards on even mediocre performers IMDB credits her with 24 acting awards and 37 nominations.

4/In the pipeline for Sharon are (1) one movie completed- “What About Love” co-starring Andy Garcia (2) one TV series at post-production stage (3) two movies at post-production stage and (4) a further movie at pre-production stage.

5/From my perspective Sharon’s legacy has been as a kind of novelty/curiosity piece in movies with arguably her single big iconic scene being that very effective one in Basic Instinct where she illustrates that she’s not wearing any under-clothing. Historically though in the mix of actresses who have come and gone her movie career deserves to be faithfully recorded and analysed for the purpose of making compparisons with her contemporaries so I welcome this new Cogerson page

  5. i saw 12 including 5 of top 7. missed antz and disaster artist. no 10s, 9s not favorites total recall, basic instinct. sexy but i feel she made every movie she was in worse. stone and pesci almost ruined casino casino an 8. nothing else above 7/10. hidden gems broken flowers 7, last action hero 7.

The Bob, try stephen segal(above the law, listed here, one of his 2 best both 7s). i feel he makes stallone(the specialist, listed here, a generous 26% review and one of stone’s top 4 adj dom BO) and statham look like great actors. you might appreciate them more if you suffered through enough segal movies.
no hiding my disappoinment in quick and dead a 0.5(even catwoman got a 1.0) lowest possible. wasted a fantastic cast i love hackman, crowe, dicaprio, sinise, and stone was so sexy. she is another WoC rule 39 “shoulda listened”. almost(broken flowers and disaster artist were well reviewed in her last 2 decades) nothing worthwhile since antz (anime), age 40 , 1998.

    1. Hey bob cox….thanks for the feedback on Sharon Stone. I have seen 25 of her movies. Thanks for the mini-reviews on Antz and Disaster Artist. My second oldest son loves Disaster Artist. I am not a huge fan of The Room. It does not sound like you are a big Stone fan. Casino got her an Oscar nomination. I liked The Quick and the Dead more than you….but I agree it was not as good as I thought it was going to be. Good feedback.
