  1. Bruce’s table above has Ship of Fools as Simone’s highest grossing movie and he gives it a fine 76% rating. However the great movie historian, author and critic David Shipman [who maybe deserves to be called “The Thinking Man’s Joel Hirschhorn”] felt Ship of Fools was overrated

In his 1972 biography of Marlon Brando[one of a quartet of books that David called The Great Moviemakers and which also included Hitchcock/Olivier/Chaplin] Shipman says of Brando’s seafaring yarn Morituri released the same year as Ship of Fools “Morituri is worth a dozen Ship of Fools.” Bruce gives Morituri only a so-so 67% rating; but that is much better than many critics gave it at the time.

Often hailed as one of France’s greatest film stars [as Bruce records above] Simone had her admirers particularly in continental Europe; but HER OWN greatest celebrity [and indeed private life] idol was I gather her husband Yves Montand to whom she was married from 1951 until her death in 1981 and with whom she made a number of movies – for example 1965’s The Sleeping Car Murder [running for 199 minutes] though unfortunately WH gives Yves no credit for that one above even though he had the anchor role of Inspector Grazziani .As the saying goes she reportedly worshipped the ground on which Yves walked and although he had many affairs she always forgave him and tended to refer to him in revered hushed tones as simply “Montand”.

I understand that both were attracted to the politics of the left and certainly Yves’ 1953 Clouzot classic The Wages of Fear is regarded by many film historians as one of the most “anti-capitalist” films of all time. [It was allegedly remade by William Friedkin in 1977, called Sorcerer and starred Roy Scheider though Friedkin rejects that assessment]. At their peak the Montands were thought of as the European cinema’s golden couple; and ultimately they were buried side-by-side in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

I am aware that the profiles of ‘foreign’ performers might often be difficult for Bruce to do completely-satisfactory work on because of scarcity of the type of comprehensive box office information that he thrives on; and because he may not always be as familiar with their careers as he is with those of the American Greats with the exception of Brando. However such was Simone’s artistic prestige that the effort WH has made to give us this solid profile of her work has for my money been well-worthwhile and Simone’s new page is definitely a “Voted Up!” one – so welcome to Myrnaland Simone!

    1. Hey Bob…good thoughts on Simone Signoret. I actually just bought A Ship Of Fools on blu-ray a few weeks ago….I have not re-watched it yet. I would say it is an ok movie….with a great cast. Yves Montand gets mentioned in the co-star link numerous times….which goes to the saying….”variety is the spice of life”. I have to plead ignorance on Montand and Signoret’s politics. Glad their movie marriage lasted so long….the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn of France? Thanks for the kind words and the movie thoughts. Good stuff as always.

      1. Thanks for the feedback.

In my post I referred to Simone’s death being in 1981. That was another unfortunate slip of the pen as the year was 1985. My apologies to Simone’s memory.

    1. Hey Dan….as always thanks for the trivia lists. Not surprised she did not make the Oracle list. She did not make many American movies…and that seems to be an important element in getting highly ranked on that list. Her Oracle co-star list is actually longer than I thought it would be. Michel Piccoli gets the honors as most frequent Oracle co-star with 6 movies. 12 Oscar winners is a pretty good total. Good stuff as always.

  3. I have seen 7 Simone Signoret movies included in the table, including the top 4. I have also seen Gunman in the Streets which I cannot find.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Ship of Fools.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Term of Trial.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Deadly Affair.

    Favourite Simone Signoret Movies:

    Ship of Fools
    Room at the Top
    Diabolique
    La Ronde
    Is Paris Burning?
    Casque D’Or

Other Simone Signoret Movies I Have Seen:

    The Deadly Affair
    Gunman in the Streets

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for the feedback on our Simone Signoret page. Gunman in the Streets never played in North American theaters….so it did not get added into the table. I have seen only two of her movies….but they are the top two movies. And they made the top of your favorites list as well. I do admit that I did not really know many of her other movies. Good stuff as always.
