  1. Hey Steve, I enjoyed your latest videos of 3 leading ladies from 50s and 60s, Vera Miles, Patricia Neal and Dana Wynter. I notice a connection there in that two of them starred in two of the most famous science fiction films of the 50s – Neal in The Day the Earth Stood Still and Wynter in Invasion of the Body Snatchers – while Miles’ most famous role of course was in Psycho.

Of the three, I guess Neal enjoyed the most success and your videos shows that as a star, she has the most interesting titles and better ratings. However, I am slightly partial to Vera. Despite her association with John Ford and Alfred Hitchcock (troubled association no doubt), she never became a major star, but between her film and television career, Vera Miles proved to be a dependable, consistent actress, equally good in her gentle roles and her occasionally devious ones (Autumn Leaves, Back Street). I thought she gave particularly strong performances as Henry Fonda’s wife in The Wrong Man, and as the murderess in the Columbo episode mentioned earlier by Bob – interestingly, I think her final line to Columbo in that episode was “I would not hurt a fly”!

A few highligths of the 3 videos: poster with drawing of Wynter looking terrified in the Italian poster of Body Snatchers; Neal and Cooper in The Fountainhead; still of Hepburn (lowering her glasses) between Neal and Peppard in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; still of proudly-looking young Vera Miles in The Searchers.

    1. Good post Phil, thanks mate. Glad you liked the videos.

I liked that Vera said she wouldn’t hurt a fly in the Columbo episode, nice injoke.

Regarding the sci-fi connection my newest video ‘Anne Francis’ is the only girl in perhaps the most famous sci-fi movie of the 1950s. “Monsters John, monsters from the Id!”

Yes I’m a bit of a sci-fi geek. It’s my favorite movie genre. Even my name has a sci-fi connection.

      1. Hi Steve,
I haven’t seen your Anne Francis video yet, but I have the DVD of Forbidden Planet so I can imagine what her top movie may be 🙂 Science fiction is certainly a genre I enjoy as well, albeit probably not as much as you.
For your name, are you referring to the Lensman series?

        1. Hi Phil, yes the Lensman series by E.E. Smith. I read the books when I was a kid and I still have the paperbacks. One of my first articles at Hubpages was titled “Interstellar Warfare – E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith and the Lensman Series”.

          1. Somehow I have also managed to get 2 videos behind….as I will be checking out Anne Francis and Joan Collins soon. As soon as I catch up on 40 or so comments….lol.

    2. Hey Phil….good breakdown on Steve’s latest videos…or latest at the time….as he has two more videos since then. I think you are making a good point about the connection of Wynter and Neal and Steve’s favorite science fiction movies. Good stuff.

  2. Say hello to Steve’s Dana Wynter video.

My comment on his video channel.

“Dana Who? Like Flora I am no really aware of her. Seen #10 D-Day…not really a good movie. #5 Airport….fun movie. #3 Sink the Bismarck….good thriller. #1 Body Snatchers….classic sci-fi movie. So 4 of 20….not too bad. Voted up and shared at UltimateMovieRankings.com”

  3. Steve’s newest video….Patricia Neal has been added to the page.

Our comment on his You Tube channel

“Another goal for Top Ten Charts over UMR….congrats. Only 22 movies? #18 Ghost Story….a movie filled with screen legends. #16 Operation Pacific…an average Wayne flick #9 The Fountainhead….her and Cooper…but the movie is a dud #8 In Harm’s Way….Douglas plays a unique character #4 A Face In The Crowd….good drama #3 Hud…surprised this is not #1 #2 Breakfast at Tiffany’s….classic…but I like her more in Hud #1 Ah….that’s right…The Day The Earth Stood Still….she and Keanu were awesome together….lol. So that is 8…over 33%…..nice video. Voted up and shared.”

    1. Thanks Bruce, appreciate the comment and share.

Btw Hud would have been no.3 on your Patricia Neal chart too, I’ve had a peek at the UMR critic scores. Tiffanys no.1 and presumably TDTESS at no.2.

      1. Hey Steve…..glad the UMR critic scores matched with what you found. Granted some of my critic scores are now going on 7 full years ago…..guess WoC needs to make that dynamic too….lol.

  4. HI STEVE

1 Patricia Neal is another of those leading ladies of whom we recently spoke who would be the lead female in many of her movies but would usually play 2nd fiddle or less to a dominant male. She got top billing in only a very few of her films. When she arrived on the scene in 1949 the first two decades of talking picture were nearly over and her heyday as a star was relatively brief from 1949 until 1957.during which she made 17 films.

2 Patricia wasn’t a performer to interest the young Bob of the 50s who would be queuing for the likes of Chuck’s western Arrowhead and mostly following through the cinemas B list action stars like Audie Murphy and Rory Calhoun, so I can remember only 3 of Neal’s performances – with Cooper in The Fountainhead [“The man who works for nothing is a fool.”] as Andy Griffith’s mentor in A Face in the Crowd in which she was magnificent and Breakfast at Tiffanys as the rich matron who “kept” George Peppard, and of course she certainly wasn’t the most important female in that one.

3 Best posters I thought and worth a 96% rating were Raton Pass, Ghost Story, The Night Digger, Something for the Birds, Three Secrets, Diplomatic Courier, The Fountainhead, A Face in the Crowd and Hud.

4 Excellent stills in my opinion were (1) Patricia with in turn The Duke, Ty Power, Cooper, Reagan and Richard Todd, and A Hepburn/George Peppard (2) the lobby card from Breakfast at Tiffanys and (3) with the robot and Michael Rennie in Day the Earth Stood Still. Another fine profile from you on an actress whose name probably means nothing to most people today. Voted up as you would say

    1. Hey Bob….so his latest is Patricia Neal…..score one for Steve….as I do not have her yet. Good breakdown on this video and her career. Good stuff as always.

    2. Hi Bob, thanks for reviewing and rating my Patricia Neal video, it is appreciated.

Glad you liked the posters and stills.

I only really knew Neal from The Day the Earth Stood Still where she gets to say the classic line “Klaatu Barada Nikto” to the robot Gort and stop him from destroying the world.

I thought I’d post a video each day this week and remove a few names from my ‘to be considered’ list.

Neal has three films scoring 10 out of 10 – Hud, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Three more have scored 9 – The Hasty Heart, Breaking Point and A Face in the Crowd.

Top scorer at IMDB is A Face in the Crowd, TDTESS is no.1 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Bruce’s scores for the top 3 on my chart are Hud with 7.9, TDTESS with 8.1 and Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the top with 8.4.

      1. Hey Steve….I bet we would have the same Top 3…..great minds thinking alike….glad you got this one right…lol.

  5. Added Steve’s Vera Miles You Tube Video To This Page

    My comment

“Nice addition. I have not seen many of her movies. John Wayne to the rescue…seen #19 Hellfighters many many times. #14 Into The Night…saw in theaters…do not remember her role…liked Bowie in the movie. #13 Psycho 2….it was ok. #5 The FBI Story …very clunky #4 The Wrong Man….not Hitch’s best by far #3 Man Who Shot Liberty Valance….classic #2 The Searchers…another classic and #1 Psycho…..what a great Top 3 for her. So that is 8 seen…..wow….only one behind Flora. Voted up and shared at you no where.”

    1. Thanks Bruce, mucho appreciado!

I think a Vera Miles page might be welcome here and she has more films than Mitzi Gaynor! Including three 10 out of 10 scorers! [cue gasps]

      1. Hey Steve….yes are right a Vera Miles UMR page would be welcomed…..in fairness…Mitzi got a page due to a request…..but now it sounds like Ms. Miles now has one too.

        1. BRUCE/STEVE:

1 Steve just wants more discussion on this site about Hitch! Clannish lot the English!

2 Nevertheless I support Steve’s request – so that’s at least 2 requests ! – because as I’ve said I found Vera a comforting person to watch [and very attractive too] though no doubt I’ll start to cringe a bit when I see the Work Horse giving her box office credit for eg The Duke’s The Searchers.

          1. Hey Bob….I will add her to the request list….just finished a Val Kilmer page…..doing a Ralph next….maybe the next classic one will be Ms. Mills….thanks for the recommendation.
