  1. Lol, you did the right thing Bruce as you almost had a revolution on your hand…though based on the Steve’s Wikipedia research suggesting Burt and Frank possibly cheated audiences, I’m not so sure any-more 🙂 Still, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to 40 comments, revise the Burt Lancaster page, and add 2 new pages just in time for the Superbowl!

    1. Hey PhilHoF17….gotta keep the peace in this sometimes rowdy town…..lol. I will remain naive, and assume the make up jobs were simple awesome and those stars all did the roles and no cheating occurred. This website keeps us hopping for sure…..since January we have had lots of comments…and have created almost 25 pages already this year…..sleep is overrated…lol.

  2. Added Steve’s latest videos to the page.

Our comments on his Joan Collins Page.

Been getting requests for a Joan page…but so far I have ignored those requests….lol. #22 Stopover Tokyo….has a lot of James Bond elements going on…and it was five years before Dr. No. #19 The Big Sleep….good mystery #16 Rally Round The Flag Boys….ok movie…certainly not the best Newman movie #9 7 Thieves is a fun movie #7 Road to Hong Kong….not good. #4 The Virgin Queen….decent movie #3 Land of the Pharaohs…..love Joan’s ending. …..wow I have not seen either of her top 2….not thinking that happens too often. Voted up and shared.

Our comments on his Anne Francis Page

Nice selection. You beat me to the punch on this one. Not thinking I have seen many of her movies. Wow all the way to #5 for my first match. Battlecry is a good war movie and a huge box office hit. #4 The Blackboard Jungle…..good movie. #3 Funny Girl….got Babs her Oscar..#2 Forbidden Planet…classic sci-fi movie….and #1 Bad Day At Black Rock….great movie. So only 5 seen….but they are her Top 5. Voted up and shared at UltimateMovieRankings.com.

      1. Hey Steve…it is a Lensman world…we are just here for you entertainment…..as you are the only person in the universe and we are your imagination……..or is that the other way around,,,,it is a Cogerson world…..I need to re-read Mark Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger short story …to figure it out.

Long way to say….you are welcome….lol.

  3. HI STEVE 1. Your Anne Francis video has been for me what is called “topical” because I noticed it in your catalogue just 10 mins after I had finished watching a 1979 episode of the TV series Quincy in which Anne was the wife of an alcoholic surgeon played by veteran supporting actor John Dehner. And therein lies a nice little Dan-like link to my idol Glenn Ford because Anne was of course Glenn’s co-star in 1955’s Blackboard Jungle and the 1957 Don’t go Near the Water while Dehner was one of the villains in Glenn’s 1956 The Fastest Gun Alive.

2 Anne was never an A List movie star but was nevertheless busy in that medium from her teenage days in the late forties until 1995. She has also appeared in many TV movies and in her detective series in 1965/66, Honey West, the character played by Anne, was the first ever in which a female detective was named in the title role.

3 For me the best posters in your presentation were Impasse, Lydia Bailey [the 1st movie I can ever remember seeing Anne in way back in 1952] Don’t Go near the Water, the Crowded Sky, Elopement, The Rack, Blackboard Jungle, Bad Day at Black Rock and Forbidden Planet with par excellence in my opinion being A Lion is in the Street starring the “dirty rat”

4 Fine stills were I thought (1) the first solo of very young and beautiful Anne (2) cowgirl Anne from The Hired Gun starring my Rory (3) with Jeffrey Hunter in Brainstorm for which too you provided another one of your excellent posters (4) with ageing George Raft in Rogue Cop (5) with my Glenn on the set of Blackboard Jungle (6) with robot friend (7) and with Paul Newman and Walter Pidgeon in The Rack. That was the young Paul’s 3rd film and he appeared in trailers to introduce the film. It wasn’t a success and was released in the 2nd half of double bills over here. Adjusted domestic Cogerson gross a mere $16.2 million

5 Great stuff overall your video and “voted up” easily to a 96% rating in my book not least because of the run of excellent stills.

    1. Hey Bob and Steve….I will check out and share the Anne Francis video in the morning….ruuuunnnnniiiiinnnnngggg out of steammmmmmmm tonight…..soooooo tireddddddd.

    2. Hi Bob, thanks for reviewing and rating my Space Babe video, appreciate the info and trivia. Glad you enjoyed the posters and stills.

Anne Francis was probably my first sci-fi pinup as a kid, she was gorgeous and sexy in Forbidden Planet, a film I’ve watched many times over the decades.

But that classic couldn’t unseat Spencer Tracy’s Bad Day at Black Rock from the top spot in Francis filmography. That’s a favorite of mine too so I’m happy with the results.

Yes I was reading up on Honey West, apparently that 60s tv series made her more famous than any of her films, especially in America. I wouldn’t mind checking out an episode or two.

hang on a sec… I’m looking at a scene from the first episode now on youtube, someone uploaded every episode on there. Picture quality is a bit soft. There’s Anne in a bikini, an excellent way to start the series… 🙂

Two of Anne’s films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Bad Day and Forbidden Planet. Two more scored 9 – The Satan Bug and Blackboard Jungle.

Highest rated at IMDB is Bad Day and tops at Rotten Tomatoes is Forbidden Planet.

Bruce gives FP 8.2 and BDABR 8.7

      1. HI STEVE

1 In the 1950s the beautiful young Anne was a regular pinup not just in the “tame” film magazines but in the “girlie” ones as well –

“I think the Hollywood pin-up is for dissatisfied erotics whereas my character is the sort of girl guys would have brought home to meet mother.”. Edna Mae Durbin.

2 Anyway I hope you are enjoying the weekend. I’ll be writing to you tomorrow about Joan
but not MY Joan for once!

  4. 1 HI PHIL It has been said that there are broadly two types of Hollywood stars – those who can “open” a film and those who can bring great acting to it. Those functions at times overlap and examples are Brando in the 1950s and part of the 1970s and Cary Grant probably largely throughout his great career but most especially I thought in the period between 1955 and his retirement in 1966. For me though there has always been ones with a 3rd function – to be in a movie just so that we can look at them, and Dana was one of those so I didn’t require dramatic impact from her and have no quarrel with your observation.

2 Yes I can recall Kirk leaping about in funny disguises. Indeed the gimmick of the movie was that the 5 cameo superstars were in disguise and we were meant to have fun spotting each one. It wasn’t hard because of course one of the qualities of stardom is individualism and Mitchum in particular with his huge bulk was unmistakable. If after 55 years I am remembering correctly Big Bob was in a wheelchair..

3 I wonder what Bruce has against Lancaster though. Normally if he had seen Burt in just a queue for the film the ole Work Horse would have thrown its gross at him! Bruce seems to becoming very subjective and self-indulgent in the way he is distributing grosses these days. If he sees this post wait for some half*** justification for leaving Lancaster alone out of the spoils from the film. Anyway as always Phil good exchanging post with u. Have a good weekend.

    1. Hi Bob, no idea why Bruce left Adrian Messenger off Burt’s chart but from what I remember his disguise in the film was a bit of a cheat. An old English lady who clearly wasn’t Burt in disguise was used in some parts of the film and Burt only appears at the very end peeling off the make up. A cheat perhaps. But still, Burt does appear in the film if only for a couple of seconds with that trademark grin of his.

      1. HI STEVE

1 Thanks for refreshing my memory. If Bruce can find out who that English woman was she will no doubt get a Cogerson page so that he can credit her with Adrian Messenger’s gross! He seems to be all over the place with his selection criteria for what a star’s minimum contribution should be for a Cogerson gross.

2 I’ll be in touch with you later about her with the sexy mole.

        1. What?!! Bruce has been cheating Burt Lancaster by not crediting him with his appearance in the credits of The List of Adrian Messenger! This was the best part of the movie! I think the time has come to repair this profound injustice made by UMR against the great Lancaster – and allow him a rematch against Gary Cooper in the annual battle of classic stars!

And by the way, I do think that big, weird-looking lady in the film may have been Lancaster despite some rumors to the contrary, and if so, this would make the injustice even greater. At least there’s no proof it was not him 🙂

Ah yes, you have an amazing memory Bob: Mitchum was in a wheelchair and you may also recall had something of an Irish accent – or it may have been from the North of England – anyway, it was not his usual accent.

          1. HI PHIL

Thanks for confirming Mitchum in the wheelchair. It’s good to know that the old memory is still working even after 55 years.

          2. Phil, Bruce, Bob, according to wikipedia and IMDB both Lancaster and Sinatra may have only appeared in the film at the very end when they were peeling off their make up. An uncredited actor played the part of Sinatra in disguise during the movie and an actress with makeup on was supposed to be Lancaster in disguise. Cheats! I want my money back!

When it comes on TV again it might be worth a closer look so you can all make your minds up.

          3. Hey Bob and Steve

            1. I for one would not doubt your memory Bob, you have an excellent memory….based on all of your movie memories you have dusted off for us.

            2. Mmmmm…..Kirk Douglas might be the only guy still standing that could let us know what happened with the cameos in Adrian Messenger.

            3. But…based on Steve’s poster in his video….the producers certainly used Lancaster to promote the movie…..so I happily add that movie to Burt’s page.

        2. Hey Bob….it is a simple rule….you get a performer gets credit for the box office gross…unless their initials are M.B. …lol.

          1. 1 Well Bruce you usually have the last word but not this time. I am now reconstructing my database so that ONLY someone with M B for initials gets grosses credit!

2 Hope you are enjoying your weekend but I have been looking out for a W o C update but haven’t been able to spot one?

          2. Hey Bob
            1. Funny about your all M.B. gross database…..makes sense to me….lol.

            2. As for WoC…..after a pretty brutal 7 to 10 days….she seems to be getting back on track….she did a half day at work on Friday….and is shooting for a full day today.

            3. Then on Saturday, her job is forcing her to give a talk at a computer convention in Las Vegas, Nevada….among the horrible things they are going to make her do during her brutal 5 days there include going to the Penn and Teller show…..she is dreading it….lol.

            4. In all seriousness…..thanks from WoC and myself for your thoughts..

      2. Hey Steve…..I am sure that when IMDb lists Lancaster’s role in Adrian Messenger as a cameo…..that was a huge reason it was not included. Since Burt’s page was completed in the Hub Pages days…..I think the fact that it took over 6 years for it to get noticed might explain that many other people think it should have been excluded as well. I guess we are going to have to open another department here at UMR…….a “did we miss a movie department”….lol. Just today I saw a Charlie Sheen movie at the store…..they needs to be added…..9/11 earned about 200K at the box office….never heard of that movie before today.

        1. Bruce, I think Bob’s initial complaint was that Sinatra, Curtis and Mitchum had the film listed on their charts at UMR but not Lancasters. If you hadn’t included their cameos either than we wouldn’t have this flurry of posts and people with pitchforks yelling outside UMR headquarters. 🙂

I should have included the film in Dana’s video, she was after all the leading lady. [Bob hmmms some more] but as Joe E. Brown says ‘nobody’s perfect!”

          1. Hey Steve….well….the issue has been fixed. Even though now your comments about the “cheats” have people doubting themselves now….lo. You and your damn Dana Wynter page….lol. I agree with you and Joe E. Brown.

    2. Hey Bob…..good thoughts on the two types of stars. As for Burt…I agree…I should have included Adrian Messenger on his table…which if you look at the Burt page you will see the movie is now included. One of the basic rules I follow is…..was the star used to promote the movie…..will right there on the poster is Burt’s name….so I got that one wrong….but it is fixed. Good catch.

  5. 1 HI STEVE Dana Wynter was a German born English actress who was one of the quiet beauties who debuted in the early 1950s and was initially in a run of 7 movies in which she was uncredited/way down the cast list such as Robert Taylor’s Knights of the Round Table, Burt’s The Crimson Pirate and the British film Lady Godiva Rides Again aka in US Bikini Beauty,
also featuring as your posters show blonde bombshell Diana Dors, Britain’s answer to Marilyn.

2 None of these films drew much attention to Dana at the time though nowadays if there were enough of them they would probably enable her to replace Myrna as the most successful actress of all time in the Cogerson grosses charts!

3 Dana’s participation in the sci-fi classic the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers earned her promotion to lead female roles and star billing in Rock Hudson’s Something of Value, Robert Taylor’s D Day 6th June, Kenny More’s Sink the Bismarck, Cagney’s Shake Hands with the Devil, Danny K’s. On the Double and 1958’s Fraulein. To the best of my knowledge the last named is the only film in which Dana was top billed but her co-star was just Mel Ferrer. After On the Double her movie star career dwindled with I think just one more notable film, as the lead actress in John Huston’s 1963 The List of Adrian Messenger, and she then settled into mostly TV work in for example the 1966 series possibly based on the character of Joel Hirschhorn The Man Who Never Was.

4 My favourite posters in your Wynter video are Triangle, It Started in Paradise, Santee with my Glenn, Night without Stars, Lovers like Us, Shake Hands with the Devil, Sink the Bismark and outshining even the high standard of those I thought was the 1st one from Lady Godiva of Coventry, though the 2nd on highlighting Dors was also an eye popper deserving a mention.

5 A fine selections of stills runs right through your presentation and I liked all of the ones showing Dana in turn with Mr Audrey Hepburn [Mel Ferrer] Robert Taylor, Rock Hudson [then at his peak of career] Richard Egan, Kenneth More [who was the height of the More era in Britain] and Kevin McCarthy, an excellent actor who never gained stardom. TRIVIAL NOTE: When they were up an coming actors Kenneth More shared a flat in London with my Dirk Bogarde.

6 I welcome this Lensman profile of an actress who for me was comforting to watch and feel it deserves a 95.5% rating. I should mention that before I saw any of Dana Andrews’ films but noticed his name on marquees I thought that he like the later Dana Wynter was a female.

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, rating, info, trivia and comment, always appreciated.

Happy the videos pictorial aspects met with your approval.

I thought you might enjoy the poster for Lady Godiva, one of those British films that rarely, if ever, pop up on British TV.

Reading your post I realise I missed a movie for the video – The List of Adrian Messenger – somehow it slipped thru the net. It would have been in 6th position with a score of 6.8. The poster can be seen in some of my other videos.

And instead of Adrian Messenger I included films that she was barely in to try and make it a Top 20. Oh well, these things do happen.

Looking at the still for Sink the Bismarck… Dana does look great in a uniform. Makes me want to watch that film again. 🙂

Only one Dana Wynter film scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Three more scored 9 – The Crimson Pirate, Shake Hands With the Devil and Airport.

On Bruce’s critics chart – Invasion scored 8.2 Crimson Pirate 8.1 and Airport 6.3. Adrian Messenger is missing from his Burt Lancaster chart which makes me feel a bit better after leaving it out of Dana’s video. I know Burt’s role was a short cameo but he was credited on the poster and is a part of the film’s ‘gimmick’.

      1. 1 Hi STEVE Thanks for your feedback to my Wynter post. It has been 55 years since I saw Adrian Messenger and I saw it in London when I was serving with the Forces but if I remember correctly George C and Dana Wynter were the leads and there were 5 “guest star” roles – Mitchum, Curtis, Burt, Sinatra and Kirk Douglas. However Kirk was the only one of the 5 to have a proper supporting part and the other 4 had gimmicky cameos. Bruce credits all of the 5 but Burt [and of course its lead male star George C too is credited] with the film’s adjusted domestic gross of $46 million.

2 I meant to say to you I was only 12 or 13 when I last saw The Day the Earth Stood Still and would have had no interest in Patricia Neal unless she was in the arms of for example Chuck or my Glenn. Therefore “Klaatu Barada Nikfu” meant nothing to me. Indeed I just assumed that it was more gibberish of Joel’s that Bruce has seized upon in awe and passed on to you

3 Do you remember the Work Horse’s wild foreign language sounding cries just before Christmas that so startled me? In the sitcom Frasier, Noel is a Star Trek fanatic who has been issued with a restraining order preventing him from pestering William Shatner so he asks Frasier to get him Scott Baio’s autograph at some local Trekkies convention. Frasier agrees provided Noel, who can speak Hebrew, will write out a speech for Frazier in Hebrew which the latter can read out at his son’s Bar Mitzvah [Jewish coming of age ceremony]. Unfortunately Frasier forgets to acquire the autograph for Noel who takes revenge by handing Frasier a speech in Klingon which Frasier thinking it’s in Hebrew reads out at the Bar Mitzvah to the amazement of everyone else.

4 That’s where I thought we were with Bruce’s pre-Christmas rant – that is, Joel had reviewed in Klingon a Star Trek movie and Bruce seized upon it and shared it with us thinking it was for example some Latin masterpiece of writing. Perhaps it’s time for you and I to terrify other viewers by sprinkling across the site the cries related to another movie monster – the Great Cthulhu! “Phnglui mglwnath Cthulhu rlyeh wgahnagl fhtagn!” Perfectly understandable though is the Robert DeNiro monster’s pitiful wail to Kenneth Branagh’s Dr Frankenstein when the Doctor casts him adrift in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein [1992] “Father! Father!” HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND

        1. STEVE
Apologies as Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein was 1994. I spotted my error only after the correction button had run out on me.

          1. Hey Bob….do I need to get a 10 minute timer now?…..lol. Since I will still be making plenty of mistakes….I think it only fair that you will not be able to fix all of your errors.

As for Lancaster and Adrian Messenger…..good old Burt is right there on the poster….so he should have that movie on the table. So it is currently uploading as I type this comment.

        2. Hey Bob, good catch on the List of Adrian Messenger. I recently saw it again on Youtube. Wynter did not make that much of an impression on me (though she technically has the female lead), but George C. Scott and Kirk Douglas (in multi-disguises) were great.

Maybe, Steve will one day expand the video to Wynter’s top 23 movies 😉

          1. Hey PhilHOF17….not thinking Steve will be re-doing the Wynter video anytime soon….heck I was surprised he did a Wynter video in the first place…lol.

    2. Hey Bob. Good review and information on Dana Wynter. Gotta admit I was almost clueless on her career before Steve’s video and this comment. Now thanks to the two of you….I have at least a better understanding of her career….so thank you.
