UMR Review of The Power Of The Dog (2021)

The critical darling of 2021 (95% on Rotten Tomatoes). One of the leading contenders for lots of Oscar nominations and wins. But a movie that general audiences are not as impressed with (61% on Rotten Tomatoes). So did I fall in line with the critics or the movie goers? Let’s find out.

Things I liked: (1) Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome in the movie….he will get a deserved Oscar nomination for this one. (2) The movie looks awesome. (3) Kodi Smit-McPhee, looking like Lukas Hass, in a supporting role, is very memorable.

Things I did not like: (1) The pace is brutally slow. I could easily see people falling asleep while trying to watch this one. (2) Jesse Plemons, who is an awesome actor, is given so little to do in this one. (3) The ending is so abrupt it felt like there is something missing.

Final thought: I enjoyed the performances, I just wish there was more to the movie. So put me on the side of the movie goers versus the professional critics.

  1. I know this has won a lot of awards already but my wife and me found this pointless. Watch Cumberbatch in the Electrical Life of Louis Wain instead.
