  1. One of the first films I saw Tim Robbins in was Bob Roberts (never saw Bull Durham), a film he also directed and where he impressed me with his humorous characterization of a crooked politician. Of the 13 films I’ve seen on the list, other favorites include Mystic River, The Player, and of course, The Shawshank Redemption, in the role for which Robbins will always be best remembered. Robbins never quite achieved the fame of former wife Susan Saradon, who he directed in the excellent Dead Man Walking, but looking at the list, he has a solid body of work (though few box office hits). Robbins is an interesting and versatile actor, and probably has more good roles coming to him.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17…as always….good to hear from you. I have actually never seen Bob Roberts. It is a movie I want to watch….just never tracked it down. Your mini-review makes me want to track it down even more. I always thought Bull Durham was overrated. I saw that one in theaters….it has some good moments….but I think Tin Cup is a better movie (same star, same subject(sports) and same director).

Mystic River is a great movie….with Oscar winning performances….yet I have never thought….I want to re-visit that movie. Just to gritty and depressing to want to see it again…sort of like Schlinder’s List…great movie with no re-watchability…..in my humble opinion.

You are 100% correct….he will be forever remembered for his role in Shawshank…though I think The Player (another of your favorites) might get a lot of mentions as well. But movies get a re-viewing from me on a regular basis….though WoC did not like The Player at all.

I hope you are correct…and more good roles are coming his way. A hidden gem for me…is his role in Cadillac Man. He and Robin Williams had a good chemistry in that one. And finally….thanks for buying the UMR book…even if…..Steve McQueen dropped out of the Top 50. Good stuff.

      1. Hey Bruce,
Nice to hear from you too! I caught Bob Roberts in a non-commercial theatre when it came out. I remember enjoying it, but do not remember a lot from the story. Getting old 🙂 Good point on Mystic River, very powerful film and though I’ve only seen it once, for my part I would see again if in the right mood. As for Schindler’s List, I think I may have seen it 4 times and it got better with each viewing. Yes, very sad, but very hopeful too.
Ah, the book! I really enjoyed it and have been meaning to leave a comment and a few questions for you, but will try to do that tomorrow when I have more time. In the mean-time congrats once again to WoC and yourself for your work!

  2. I have never liked many of Tim Robbins’ films but his understated performance in Shawshank Redemption IS one of my all-time fave pieces of acting. He was able to dominate the movie without yelling his head off or bombarding us with swear words.

I therefore bracket Andy Dufresne as a “low key” hero alongside Shane, Patrick Swayze’s Dalton in Road House [1989] and Fonda’s Juror No in 12 Angry Men. Swayze did admittedly use a few expletives deleted whilst back in the 1950s Laddie and Hank wouldn’t have been allowed to!.

IMDB credits Tim with 37 acting awards and 39 noms. His net worth is said to be $60 million. This new page is “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey bob. Interesting that his performance in Shawshank overrides your “meh” on his other performances. I have been trying to get WoC to watch that movie for the last couple of months. Tried just a couple of days ago….but Will Ferrell’s Stranger Than Fiction was the one she wanted to watch. Interesting grouping of “low key” heroes. The power of Dalton and Road House…lol. Thanks for the vote up, the visit and the comment.

  3. My favorite Tim Robbins movies are Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River and Five Corners. Five Corners is set in my old neighborhood in the Bronx (but filmed in Queens) and was written by John Patrick Shanley who had just written Moonstruck. Shanley apparently lived a few blocks from me and we even went to the same grade school. Over 20 years later they made a movie out of another of his shows, Doubt with Meryl Streep and they really filmed in my old neighborhood. It’s weird seeing Meryl walking through Parkchester. Parkchester had an oval in it. In Five Corners supposedly at the oval, John Turturro kills 2 penguins he has stolen from the Bronx zoo because Jodie Foster rejects them and him.

Tim is #93 on the December 15, 2018 Oracle of Bacon top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. These are the other actors on the list he appeared with.

At least all his connections to the Player are legit since he is not a cameo but the player himself.

    1. Hey Dan. I liked reading about movie made near your neighborhood. Very interesting. It helps put a place to your name. I imagine you have lots of stories/movies like that…since you live in one of the most used cities in movies. I have not seen Five Corners…but I know that helped launch John Turturro’s career. Spike Lee saw Turturro in that movie, and cast him in Do The Right Thing. So Tim Robbins is in the Top 100. I would bet….since he seems to be slowing down…his stay in the Top 100 will be short.

Looking at the first list….6 movies with John Cusack…..I knew they had made a few together….just not that many. They must have hit it off on the set of The Sure Thing. Robbins role in Cusack’s High Fidelity is very funny. You are 100% correct…..his Oscar connections in The Player are 100% legit. As always….your lists are amazing, interesting and appreciated.

  4. I have seen 5 Tim Robbins movies, all of them in the top 10.

    Favourite Tim Robbins Movies:

    Bull Durham
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Top Gun
    Mystic River

Other Tim Robbins Movie I Have Seen:

    Dead Man Walking

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for the comment and visit on Mr. Tim Robbins. I would say your 5 Robbins movies would cover almost all of his major movies. The ones you have not seen, that I think you might enjoy would be The Player….if only to spot the many many cameos…..plus it is a behind the scenes look at Hollywood….with lots of references to classic movies. The above picture of the movie shows two classic movie posters in the background. Others would include The Sure Thing…which was Rob Reiner’s version of It Happened One Night with John Cusack in the Clark Gable role, High Fidelity which is a very smart modern comedy with Cusack again and Cadillac Man with the late great Robin Williams…..that is probably my hidden treasure…..as many people do not like that one at all. Good stuff as always.

  5. I’ve seen 19 of the 49 films on the chart. Favorites include – War of the Worlds, Mission to Mars, Top Gun, Shawshank Redemption, Austin Powers, Green Lantern and of course Howard the Duck.

Top Gun was the most successful film he was in but Spielberg’s War of the Worlds wasn’t far behind on the worldwide adjusted chart. Both starred Tom Cruise.

Mystic River tops the UMR chart, I’ve only watched that once and I’m not that eager to watch it again.
The Shawshank Redemption tops the critics chart, more enjoyable than Mystic River but it’s been a while since I last watched it.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

Glad the website is working, couldn’t get on here on sunday. Database error or something.

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Sorry the website was down when you tried Sunday….I think it was having some serious meltdowns all weekend long. Hopefully….things are better now….it should be!…… as my rates to host went up yet again!
      2. I have seen 35 of his movies…..which is a decent 72% watch rate…..not too bad.
      3. I have not seen Top Gun in awhile…..so I still can not place Robbins in Top Gun.
      4. I actually bought a 3D version of Top Gun….but it looks horrible…..the colors are so out of whack…that I could not watch the movie.
      5. I liked the first 75% of War of the Worlds….heck….I loved the first 75%…..but when the movie settled into the house….the movie fell apart for me…..sort of the way Glass did in 2019.
      6. I am right there with you on Mystic River….and despite the stellar cast (Bacon, Penn, Robbins) and direction of Clint……I have never thought…..hey let’s re-watch Mystic River….too dark and too depressing……but a damn good movie.
      7. WoC and I almost watched Shawshank a few weekends ago…..she…..sorry to say….has never seen the top rated movie on IMDb….but one day I will get her through Robbins most famous role.
      Good stuff.
