I’ve seen 15 of the 25 films on the chart. Favorites are – the three Spider-Man movies, Tropic Thunder, The Great Gatsby and Boss Baby,

I’ve seen all 7 Spider-Man movies at the cinema, he proudly admitted. All enjoyable but the Tobey Maguire editions are my favorites. Heck I even saw a TV movie Spider-Man on the big screen back in the late 70s, it was awful.

Spider-Man vs Doc Ock tops the critics chart, no arguement there.

    Good work Bruce. Vote Up!

Writing this page sent me down a Don’s Plum rabbit hole. As I was researching Maguire’s page I came across a movie called Don’s Plum. Don’s Plum is a movie that I had never even heard of before the week started. What is Don’s Plum? Don’s Plum is a low budget independent movie starring…..a pre Spidey Tobey Maguire, a pre Entourage Kevin Connolly and a pre Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio. Behind the scenes the movie is filled with lots of fighting and lots of lawsuits. Essentially Don’s Plum is banned in the United States and Canada (this was a Tobey and Leo requirement to settle the lawsuit). It can be viewed everywhere else in the world. I have now seen both the movie, and a documentary called The Curse of Don’s Plum. Heck I have now even had some communication with the producer (Dale Wheatley) of the movie. Ever heard of Don’s Plum?

Tobey’s box office credentials largely rest with the Spidey series of course though as Bruce illustrates above he has been in other commercially-successful films. He has won Saturn awards for Spiderman, Pleasantville and Brothers but for me his artistic reputation is best-consolidated by The Cider House Rules with a classy Sir Maurice in support.

I will confess though that my fave Maguire performance is as the literature-famous Nick Carraway in 2013’s Great Gatsby though The Work Horse gives it just a 61% rating – HE would!

In Laddie’s [underrated in my view] 1949 Great Gatsby Carraway was played by sometimes-cowboy actor MacDonald Carey. Young Carey Mulligan [no relation!] as Daisy in the Toby/De Caprio version is also a class act for my money.

Sadly though I coincidentally saw her again just last night in 2020’s Promising Young Woman [produced by Margot Robbie and executive produced by Carey herself] and although Carey deservedly got a best actress nom for that one, her character was no class act swearing and cursing as she did like some starlet auditioning for the part of a hooker in a Bruce Willis or Joe Peski movie.

I see that The Ice Storm gets a high 78% Cogerson rating and others liked it as well: 74% from IMDB for example. I wonder why it is therefore that I am convinced that its entry above lowers the tone a bit of Tobey’s overall filmography? I simply can’t think why I feel that way!

Tobey is currently filming Babylon with Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt and he is credited overall with 9 awards and 37 noms for his past work. His net worth is said to be $75 million. Clearly for Tobey – as Superman did for Brando – Spidey has paid well.

As well as co-starring in it Tobey is the executive producer of Babylon; and has also been announced as the producer of the hoped-for upcoming McClane. Now THAT should get one or two hearts fluttering on this site!! though The Work Horse told me he is not confdent in its going ahead –

    Matthew 14:31
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why do you doubt?

    Anyway I l ike Tobey so“Voted Up!”

Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our latest UMR page. I am right there with you on The Cider House Rules…..he and Sir Caine had a great screen chemistry. Good breakdown on the Gatsby movies…I have only seen the Redford and DiCaprio versions…I should check out the Ladd Gatsby. Good thoughts on Carey Mulligan….I had hoped she would have won the Oscar for her Promising Young Woman…I enjoyed her performance more that McDormand’s 3rd Oscar winning performance. As for The Ice Storm…I have only seen it once….and it did not really stick to well in my memory…..so I am think I am in the same boat as you. Good stuff on his future projects….and the vote up.
