1. 1 My only divergence of opinion with you would be in relation to how one interprets and applies the multitude of figures that you provide us with. I

   2 If one includes the Shrek films Cameron’s top billing average is38.2 % and if one excludes those films it is 43.4%. In the period 1930-1960 which would have been the period in which Myrna Loy was most prominent in the talkies era she was top-billed in just 23.7% of her movies and if those movies outside the 1930-60 period are included Myrna’s 1st billing average average slips to 19.2% yet you have called her the greatest box office actress of all time ignoring the fact that she was billed second and often much lower almost 81% of the time and yet implying that those kinds of considerations dilute Cameron Diaz’s status.

   3 However I was not attempting to compare Diaz with Loy or even with any of the actresses in your Top 12 but in my view she was more commercially successful than some of those others in your 25. For example Charleze Theron was not top billed in ANY of her 6 films that grossed over 100 million and in fact was not billed above the title with the stars in the posters for two of them. Susan Sarandon was top billed only once in her 12 movies grossing over 100 million and in some was well down the cast list and/or not billed with the stars.

   4 I am also puzzled by your making distinctions between Cameron’s voice roles in the Shrek franchise where she is billed above the title as one of the stars and not making the same distinction in a number of other cases –eg Mel Gibson.

   1. Hey Bob…..it is interesting to look at the billing…..but to me if you are on the promotional material then you are responsible for the success or failure of the movie. I would imagine that 80% of the movies listed on the UMR subject pages fall in that category…..heck sometimes big fans of a star will go and see a movie if only for a 30 second scene. For example….I know a young man that went and saw Loaded Weapon….because Bruce Willis had a cameo role.

      Well I went pretty quickly through the billings for Diaz….so I can see that I made a couple of mistakes…..it is sometimes a little confusing….for instance….On Any Given Sunday….she is 2nd on the IMDb role list…..but is either 5th or 4th on the poster….plus some billings have different orders from the beginning credits to the end credits.

      As for Loy….I did a poster search on her movies…and I counted over 30 that she was listed above the title….I would say she was above the title in 80% of the movies I looked at….heck her top billed movies she was listed below the title 8 times….including in The Best Years of Our Lives.

      I think in the end….we will have to agree to disagree on these subject.

      1. 1 I think that generally speaking your selection criteria for the 25 worked very well as I agreed with 21 of the 25. However perhaps it occasionally cannot detect below its radar stars like Cameron.

         2 Certainly common sense would dictate that a 25 actress list in the period concerned should include an actress whose adjusted worldwide gross from 13 top billed movies is nearly $3 billion, who has been listed as the highest earning female celebrity in the world and who according to the Forbes Rich List has generated net wealth of $100 million from movies.

         3 I should add that I like neither her nor the type of film that she usually makes particularly in stand alone mode – such as Sex Tape and the Other Woman – but I don’t think it’s really worth offering comments that are not honest and I feel that you have seriously under estimated Cameron Diaz’s enormous commercial success.

         4 Anyway we’ll agree to differ and I hope you are having a happy New Year.

         1. Hey Bob….she has some great stats for sure…..the lack of an Oscar nomination hurt her in my ranking system….as well as only appearing in 1 Best Picture Oscar Nominee. I imagine when and ever I get these updates done….I will be revisiting these picks….and when it comes to Diaz…I will give her a deeper look. I like to think the fact that she was one of the original Hub Page subjects….that I knew she had enormous commercial success. I do think she needs to be back in front of the camera soon….according to IMDb there is not much coming…..other than a fifth Shrek movie….and even that will be behind the camera.

2. HI Bruce and Happy New Year!
   1 A welcome addition to Cameron’s page as you say . John and I might wish to insist that from now on a billing column is obligatory for a Cogerson new page as it is an important matter! It mus be or we wouldn’t have spent so much time arguing the toss about it! Your tally and mine of 13 Diaz top billed films agree but there is a small element of swings and roundabouts in our respective findings _
   (1) In Head above Water which was made in Cameron’s early days she is actually billed 2nd to Harvey Kitel whereas you have her as 1st.

   (2) However she is billed 1st in The Holiday. What may have misled you there is that IMDB as it often does in its lead in mentions the stars out of billing order and so for The Holiday it unofficially referred to Kate Winslet first. However if you look at IMDB’sproper cast list and its poster beside the lead-in and then check as well the cast list and poster in Wikipedia you will see that Cameron unequivocally gets 1st billing. Indeed there is no doubt about that as The Holiday was on one of our special Christmas movie channels over her and I watched it as a Christmas Eve treat and Diaz does come first in the opening credits on the print of the film.

   2 However it’s good to see the billing issue being taken seriously if only in relation to one star and indeed we have had a double New Year’s precedent with Steve going deep into stats as you may have noticed in his very interesting comments about Gene and Fred.

   1 Firstly I never said that Myrna didn’t deserve to be in a good position in lists of top classic era actresses- I just questioned the statement that she was the most successful box office actress ever

   2 Secondly whilst I would not regard Diaz as being in the same class as Loy I’m not seeing what you’re seeing regarding Camron as her being cited in 2010 as the wealthiest female entertainer in the world at that time and overall the 60th wealthiest person globally is a measure of great financial success that puts in the shade many actresses in your 25 especially as your 25 goes up to only 2010 the year in which Cameron reached the peak of her commercial success according to the Forbes Rich List

   3 You may wish to think again about your following two statements (1) That Diaz “was never a top biller and was always a second lead”. In fact between 1998 and 2014 Cameron topped the bill in 13 films which in your table have an adjusted overall worldwide gross of just under $3 billion which is an average of nearly $220 million per movie globally; and if you are not giving Diaz credit for films in which she was second billed, then just as you know that I feel that it was inconsistent to credit Virginia Mayo with Up in Arms’ gross for you to give Myrna credit for any more than a handful of Loy films would also be seriously inconsistent
   (2) That Cameron doesn’t seem to be around much anymore. She has in fact made 10 films since your 2010 cut off point three of them in 2014 and according to Wikipedia she has just completed another lucrative voice role for Shrek 5

   4 However I apologise if I have misled you about my opinion of your selections for your Top 25 females list. When I said that I agreed with 7 actresses from the modern era being your top 12 I was not meaning that I disagreed with the other 5 in your Top 12 whose debuts were in the classic era such as Doris Day and Audrey Hepburn. In fact I agree with your entire Top 20 albeit in a different order in a few cases and I agree with Goldie Hawn being in your bottom 5 as I stated previously. I have though doubts about the overall box office credentials of Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Anne Bancroft and Charleze Theron and although I accept that they were not by any means bad choices as they are all fine actresses I would have placed above those 4 Goldie and Cameron. However as you say it’s a matter of opinion and as it is I agree totally with 84% of your selections.

   1. Hey Bob….lots of good information here. I will have to really dig deep into this comment when I get home. But I know Diaz has not been in a movie in 2015 or 2016….I think….as this page has not been updated. Of those top billed movies how many were hits? Seems all of her hits have been with other stars…not sure there has been a Diaz alone hit. I know The Other Woman did ok…but it seems the promotions pushed Leslie Mann more than Diaz. Good stuff…hitting the road in 4 and half hours…so I need to get some sleep. Happy New Year.

      1. Your comment got me motivated to really look at Diaz’s career….with the thought being I thought she was similar to Loy and you thinking Diaz was a stand alone star.
      2. Well….to really look at the numbers…I first had to update her page….so we can now check Diaz off the list of pages to update.
      3. In this update…I went ahead and checked out the billing…..mainly using the posters….and the listing at IMDb.
      4. So here are the stats I have….of 34 movies…..Diaz has been top billed 15 times…..and second or worse billed 19 times. I included the Shrek billing in these totals….she was billed 3rd.
      5. When looking at the two groups of movies…I threw out the Shrek movies…which leaves exactly 15 in each group.
      6. Diaz top billed movies……15 of them….for a combined domestic gross of….$1.18 billon…..or $78.73 million per movie….4 of them crossed the $100 million mark…..both Charlie’s Angels movies (I was surprised Barrymore was not first billed….as she was the producer and her production company made the movie), Bad Teacher (Diaz did all the heavy lifting on this one) and There’s Something About Mary (her role is actually a supporting one…but she got top billing).
      7. Of the 15 movies….only 5 of them….are considered better than average when looking at the UMR scores.
      8. Diaz second or worse billed movies….15 of them…for a combined domestic gross of….$1.38 billion or $88.00 per movie…..6 of them crossed the $100 million mark…..with the exception of Gangs of New York…her roles were in support of other stars carrying the load…DiCaprio, Cruise, Rogen, Carrey, Roberts and Pacino.
      9. Of the 15 movies….8 of them are considered better than average when looking at the UMR scores.
      10. If we were to include the Shrek movies…..then the second or worse billed movies….would be 19 movies with a combined domestic gross of $3.06 billion or $161.10 per movie…..and 12 of the 19 would be better than average according to UMR score.

      So what does all of this mean….I think it means the answer is in between your thinking and my thinking…..I actually did not realize that she got top billing in Mary and Charlie’s….so that obviously favors your side….while…..the top billed Diaz movies are less than half of her movies…..and generally have not done well…..10 of the 15 (66%) of her movies falling in the less than average category according to UMR.

      Anyway…..no matter what…this Diaz page is updated……so it was worth the effort.
