  1. Hi Bob, thanks for reviewing my Val Kilmer video, the generous rating and info are much appreciated. Glad you liked the picture gallery.

Why have you avoided Top Gun all these years? Too loud? Too jingoistic? Too enjoyable? And I thought you were a closet Cruise fan all this time! The Alan Ladd of the new millennium and as one critic called him, the last ‘big’ movie star. 🙂

I’ve read Val Kilmer’s autobiography recently, the best parts anyway and he seems to be a huge Brando fan, I mean is there anyone who isn’t? Oh wait, forgot about the *whispers* necronomicon.. [Stop it Steve!]

I’ll see if I can find some choice quotes from his book and post them here later.

Only one film scored 10 out of 10 from my sources and that was Heat, there is one film scoring 9 – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and several 8 out of 10s including Tombstone, True Romance and Willow.

Val Kilmer on Tombstone – “I liked being Doc Holliday. It’s fun to be insightful and aristocratic, to stand up for your friend and make sacrifices for him. It was fun to be arrogant like he was and have the goods to back it up. He was a very noble character. Although, let’s not forget, he did kill a lot of people.”

Val Kilmer on working with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat – “Well imagine being able to say, “Al and Bob” for the rest of your life. Not many people can do that. I am in one of the greatest cops and robbers films in film history, has to be in the top 20. I am on the poster for goodness sake. What an honor! Priceless experience. Watching ALL the actors do their thing. We all work hard but when you are with the icons, you get really squared away. Loved every minute of it.”

    1. HI STEVE Thanks for the feedback which was solid and comprehensive as always. I wouldn’t mind seeing those additional quotes that you refer to in your 4th paragraph. I liked the one about DeNiro/Pacino in your final paragraph.

I liked Cruise in A few Good Men but I don’t like his action films because [whereas Laddie was a quiet and low key type of action hero] Cruise is rather a showy kind for my money – too full of himself. “At last I can wear high heels again.” Nicole Kidman to reporters after her divorce from Cruise was finalised.

Is there anyone who doesn’t like Brando apart from Cthulhu you ask?

SPENCER TRACY: “Acting doesn’t take brains – look at your husband!’ Old Cantankerous speaking to Anna Kashfi Brando’s wwife at the time.

JAMES CAGNEY: I have never seen a Brando film and I never intend to.”

Ironically Spence and Jimmy attacked The Great Mumbler for what were in effect opposing reasons. Brando and the other method boys like Paul Newman*** were considered ‘left wing’. Tracy regarded himself as THE Hollywood Liberal [Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner/Inherit the Wind/Bad Day at Black Rock and all that stuff] and he feared that Marlon would usurp his position in that respect; Cag who was a heavy supporter of the American conservative ideology [Yankee Doodle Dandy/Devil Dogs of the Air/Captain of the Clouds etc] destested Marlon as a perceived “leftie”.

***During the Watergate scandal a list was discovered that turned out to be a Presidential dossier on people whom Richard Nixon personally considered ‘enemies of the state’ and his aides paid a lot of attention to it in their dealings with people outside the Wite House; and one of the entries on the list allegedly read “PAUL NEWMAN. Trendy Liberal. Needs careful watching.”

      1. Bob, I posted those Val Kilmer quotes over in Bruce’s Marlon Brando page, I thought it would be more fitting there. Enjoy!

  2. HI BRUCE

Never mind the Two Bobs. This time you and I agree about something – a disinterest in Top Gun.

Heat was so-so in my view but over-long [170 mins] and over-rated.

I did like The Doors but then maybe you have to be a fan of Jim Morrison’s music as I am to appreciate that one.

“Due to his wild personality, poetic lyrics, his widely recognized voice, unpredictable and erratic performances, and the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and early death, Morrison is regarded by music critics and fans as one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock history. Since his death, his fame has endured as one of popular culture’s most rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing the generation gap and youth counterculture.”

Added Steve’s Val Kilmer Video To This Page.

    1. Hi Bruce, Top Gun and Heat not favorites? oooh. He was great in Tombstone, I think that’s his favorite role I skimmed thru Val’s autobiography recently and he talks about that role more than any of his others. The title of the book was “I’m your Huckleberry” a quote from the film.

Your tally of 28 beats my 21, Flora has seen 2 of the 30 – Top Gun and Tombstone. Thanks for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.
