What a talent. He left behind so many great movies. Loved him and I am truly sad. Good to see UMR still around.
Robert Duvall, is the # 36 most connected actor of the 1970’s.
Hi Bob, hope you enjoyed your holiday, thanks for checking out my Robert Duvall video, appreciate the comment and review.
Glad you liked the posters and stills.
40 films seemed about right for Duvall, there was 50 on my master list. Lots of crowd pleasers here. Plenty of favorites even among the low scorers.
I didn’t include The Conversation because Duvall had a short unbilled cameo in it, done as a favour to Coppola. I watched the film again recently. The funny thing is Bruce wagged his finger at me recently for including James Caan’s extended cameo in Godfather II on my chart and that wasn’t included in his. But here included The Conversation on Duvalls chart. It’s a funny old world. š
If I had included The Conversation it would have tied with MASH in 5th position.
Duvall has 6 films scoring 10 out of 10 from my sources – Network, To Kill a Mockingbird, MASH, Apocalypse Now and Godfather 1 and 2. Two topped out at 9 and aren’t even in the top 10 – Countdown and A Civil Action (which isn’t even in the top 20). Twelve films scored 8 out of 10.
The highest rated at IMDB is The Godfather, followed by Godfather II and Apocalypse Now. Bruce’s critics chart has similar results.
HI STEVE
1 Yes Bruce can be very inconsistent at times and his greatest contradiction that I personally have noticed is his exclusion of Superman Returns from the Mumbles chart but the inclusion of Ginny’s almost non-existent Up in Arms part in Mayo’s grosses.
2 However we should bear in mind one philosopher’s caution that idolatry can confuse the mind and often even rob the idolater of the ability to think for himself. Therefore it is possible that when poor ole WH takes these decisions he is feverishly trying to find out or work out “What did/would Joel do?” Certainly the unfortunate Mr Mumbles would have been on a hiding to nothing in those kinds of deliberations!
3 Yes I did enjoy my holiday thanks but missed the banter of this site and thrilling though parts of the holiday were they weren’t as dynamic as I see this site is now becoming!
1 Hi STEVE In the opening quote in your video Duvall describes himself as a character actor and so successful has he been in that respect that as well as earning many awards/nominations he is ranked 17th in IMDBās āUltimateā List of the 100 Greatest Actors of All Time. Apart from the Coppola movies my own favourite Duvall flicks are The Natural, Tender Mercies, Days of Thunder, True Confessions and Open Range.
2. Your 40 selections have yielded another glut of fascinating posters and I chose as the very best The 6th Day, Killer Elite, The Outfit, Gods and Generals, We Own the Night, Rain People, True Grit and The Apostle, though out on its own in my opinion is the 1st of the two for Apocalypse Now as for this movie that poster is the most original one in my experience. Most interesting stills for me were those from The Judge, Colors, 7Per Cent Solution, TX 1138, Open Range and Tender Mercies.
3 Bruce and you agree on 4 of Duvallās Top 5 movies and in the exact same order. For your 5th you picked MASH whereas he has The Conversation. On this occasion I would tend to support his choice as I have never been one of the multitude of cinemagoers who obviously adored MASH. Great video profile of a fine actor well worth 97% rating. I see that you have also now done profiles of a further two of the Godpop Guys and I will let you have my comments on those videos over the next few days.
