  1. 1/old screwball comedies where the leading men have what look like brylcreem plastered all over their gleaming hair, are always dressed up like a “dog’s dinner” [often even in their own homes] speak in “awfully-awfully” dialogue and smoke cigarettes as if that is SEXY.

    2/30s and 40s movies in particular where ”fashion icons” like my Joan seem to wish to emulate “clothes horses” all the time. [Ouch!]

    3/ those flicks where even husbands and wives are not allowed to be seen sharing a bed.

    4/ones that use euphemisms such as “nightclub hostesses” to describe the profession of females [like my Deanna in Christmas Holiday] who are obviously high-class hookers. That example really got the boot into me [there are Joel-types among the group who delight at times in targeting other among us!] but it did neatly contrast with Pretty Woman’s Vivian who was overtly a prostitute.

    5/films about the world wars where despite the massive slaughter going on the world still wasn’t a bad place to live if Gable or Cooper “get the girl”.

    6/movies like some of the Errol Flynn ones where a whole troop of stock actors follow the hero about and subordinate their own interests to his.

    7/war films that laughably suggest that actors like Bogie, Wayne and Ladd could single-handed have posed a physical threat to any powerful organisation let alone a ruthless killing machine like the 3rd Reich. Indeed The Duke and Laddie dodged the draft while, when Humph was driving off on his honeymoon with Bacall, Lauren’s father is reported to have ruefully said to a friend “They should be taking Bogie to the morgue, not the honeymoon bed.”

  2. Thanks for the additional comments. It’s some time, what with your hectic work schedule, that I can recall seeing you become so engaged with a topic. Steve seems to be able to rattle your cage more than I can! So Roger Ebert didn’t think much of Pretty Woman – but he did rave over Brando and The Master didn’t. As our old friend Dalton accepted: opinions vary.

    My own point was though that for the following reasons I would have to disagree with the suggestion that Pretty Woman is “horribly dated” and certainly, BOTTOM LINE, that label is at least hyperbole.

    1/Regarding CONTENT, obviously some of today’s reviewers have continued to like the movie and its concept when (1) 20 years after its release one critic could write it is “still just about the best romantic comedy ever made – the one that sets the gold standard that others must try to surpass.” and (2) last month another could opine that modern audiences would welcome the stage musical version as “the feel-good story they know and love.”

    2/as regards artwork it’s difficult to imagine the camera work and other filming techniques being more dated than those in some of the black and white “classics” of the 30s and 40s.

    As you know I belong to a small film buff circle and tonight [Sunday] I asked them for brief examples of what they would consider as a “dated” movie, and in Part 2 is a small sample of their replies. It’s a “straw poll” I know but after all they are supposed to be BUFFS.

      Please delete from my previous post the quote below. I thought at first you were implying Roger had a down on the movie because he didn’t give it FOUR stars. I now see that you were saying he liked it and of course 3.5 stars is excellent. LESSON As Roger had the wisdom to correctly assess MB performances we should always heed Rog and treat Joel as an “outlier”!

      1. Hey Bob….I will have to correct that later tonight. Steve did not get me “all fired up”. There is no right answer or wrong answer when it comes to review %. Ultimately it only matters if you like a movie or not. For awhile I thought Blue City was awesome….and no bad reviews could convince me otherwise. You have made lots of great points in your comment. Thanks for sharing it….you…like….Steve and Dan….are the man!

    1. Hey Bob…I agree it has many good reviews….but it also has many not so good reviews. I can find solid reviews for Holmes & Watson……62% says the movie is good…..just not stellar….but that is just one factor in the UMR score…..which is like a checks and balance system. Overall…we have Pretty Woman with a 93.50 score which would rate it as a 4.5 out of 5.0 movie on our ticket system ranking…and Pelican Brief with a 91.70 score. ….which is also a 4.5 ticket rating. Added bonus….they both are in Julia’s Top 7 UMR score movies. Good stuff. Happy Sunday.
