HI BRUCE There was an episode of the TV sitcom Frasier called The Show Where Sam Shows Up [Season 2, Episode 16, 21 Feb 95] where Ted Danson as Sam Malone from the Boston Cheers bar in that former TV series of the same name shows up at Frasier’s new home in Seattle. He tells Frasier that he’s engaged to be married to a girl named Sheila played by Tea Leoni. She has actually unbeknown to Sam slept with Frasier but she doesn’t spill the beans though she confesses to Sam that she has slept with someone else at the Cheers bar.

Sam tells her that he is prepared to be forgiving [after all they had met at an Alcoholics Anonymous-type Group for sex addicts!] and for fun tries to guess who it was and he goes through the potential names one by one -Was it Norman? Was it Woody, etc? She dismisses all the names and finally confesses that it was Cliff Clavin, who is considered a windbag and figure of fun in the bar. That’s the final straw for Sam and he calls off the engagement and Frasier takes it as a reflection on himself that “I slept with someone who slept with Cliff!” The episode ends with Sam and Frasier going their separate ways but shaking their heads in disbelief and repeating over and over again “But Cliff! But Cliff! But Cliff!”

Clearly I approve of Flora’s taste in idols as Widmark, Peck and Charlie Bill are all my idols too, and I like and admire Judy Garland whom Flora also favours. I liked Archie in his 1955-1966 movies; I find Willis hugely enjoyable [and indeed have ‘chastised’ you for not including him in your Greats lists!]; Sir Maurice is one of my own idols; and I liked Judd Nelson during his brief heyday.

Also I share Steve’s ‘worship’ of Chuck and found Bruce Lee entertaining to watch as he was super-athletic. I can understand Steve liking actions stars such as Arnie, Sly, James Bond, the Star Wars actors and the X Men heroes as I too once liked them when they were younger and/or before their material became, in my view, so repetitive. But like Sam Malone I do draw a line somewhere so I am sitting here saying over and over again “But Jason! But Jason! But Jason!” and shaking my head in disbelief.

PS: I am always interested in reading about Randy.
