Al Pacino in 1975's Dog Day Afternoon
Al Pacino in 1975’s Dog Day Afternoon

Possibly Interesting Facts About Al Pacino

1. Alfredo James Pacino was born in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City on April 25, 1940.  In his teenage years, Pacino was known as “Sonny” to his friends. He had ambitions to become a baseball player and was also nicknamed “The Actor”.

2. Al Pacino made his Broadway debut in 1969‘s Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?  It closed after 39 performances on March 29, 1969, but Pacino received rave reviews and won the Tony Award®.

3. Al Pacino was rejected repeatedly by studio heads and frequently referred to as “that midget Pacino” by producers of The Godfather (1972) who did not want him for the role of Michael Corleone , but Francis Ford Coppola fought for him. This film was shot briskly because both the director and the leading actor were in constant fear of being fired. Ironically, this turned out to be a breakthrough for both.

4. Al Pacino had been friends with John Cazale since they were teenagers. They starred together in Dog Day Afternoon (1975), The Godfather: Part II (1974) and The Godfather (1972).  Cazale’s only other two movies, The Deer Hunter and The Conversation, joined his three Pacino movies as Best Picture Oscar® nominated movies.  Making Cazale a perfect 5 for 5 when looking at Best Pictures.  Three of the movies won the Best Picture Oscar®.

5. Al Pacino Is one of nine actors to have won the Triple Crown of Acting (an Oscar®, Emmy® and Tony®); the others in chronological order are Thomas Mitchell, Melvyn Douglas, Paul Scofield, Jack Albertson, Jason Robards, Jeremy Irons, Geoffrey Rush and Christopher Plummer.

I have enjoyed Al Pacino Movies very much. Sea Of Love was a very good movie, must have seen it at least six times. Good Acting. Heat with Robert DeNero was a very good movie with all the actors. I had hoped he would get away but alas he did not…having the two actors together was a good move. THANKS FOR THE PAGE.

    Good Morning Cogerson:

I kinda like old Al. But it occurred to me as I read the hub that I really haven’t seen many of his movies. It also occurs to me that what I generally pay attention to is the overall movie. I don’t think I actually focus on the actor unless it is something I feel is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed “And Justice for All”, but it’s the theme of the movie that appeals to me. I remember the movie extremely well, but his acting…not so much. I’ll have to start paying more attention.:)

Pacino is a fantastic actor when he’s on his game. Sometimes he has a tendency to go over-the-top, (Scarface) but he’s better when he’s a bit more restrained. His performances in “The Godfather” films and “Dog Day Afternoon” were terrific. I think his best performance in recent years was “Insomnia”. Actually, I don’t think the film he actually won a (long overdue) Oscar for–Scent of a Women–was among his best work. I think it was a case of Hollywood saying “We’ve never given Al an Oscar for all his great work so lets toss him a bone this year”. I’m glad he finally got his Oscar but I wish it hade been for one of his better performances

I agree Rob…..his Oscar was a career Oscar….making up for their mistakes in his earlier films….his not my favorite but I know he is a great actor…thanks for reading and commenting
