Thoughts On Anne Hathaway Movies

Alice in Wonderland (2012) My thoughts: I know this was a huge hit but it is not a movie that I liked at all.  I think Johnny Depp gets the blame for that as his performance is very distracting.  Hathaway as the White Queen is one of the better parts of the movie.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) My thoughts:   Ok…..this is not a great movie by far…but it is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  Hathaway’s role pretty much has nothing to do in the movie.

Becoming Jane (2007)  My thoughts:  Another Hathaway movie that I have not seen….but it is sitting on my DVD case and I am sure that I will be watching it after I finish this page.

Bride Wars (2009)  My thoughts: Hathaway battles Kate Hudson in this comedy that even the women in my family thought was disappointing and not too funny.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)  My thoughts:  Brokeback Mountain was nominated for 8 Oscars® and won 3 Oscars®.  Many consider Brokeback Mountain to be one of the best movies made in the last 10 years.  Do people even remember that Anne Hathaway was in the movie?

Colossal (2017) My thoughts:  I really really liked the trailer…..but I found the movie too much of a hit and miss….some parts are fun…..while more of the movie is slow paced and somewhat depressing.

The Dark Knight Rises (2009)  My thoughts:  When I first heard that Hathaway was going to play Catwoman I was not too excited.  After watching the movie I realize that she was easily the best part of the movie.  When her Catwoman was on screen the movie was fun and exciting…when she was absent from the movie…the movie bogged down.  This is my favorite Anne Hathaway performance but not my favorite Anne Hathaway movie.

Dark Waters (2019) My thoughts: I can not believe she took this pretty standard “wife cliche” role. The movie is interesting but never gets rolling, and amazingly, considering it is based on a true story, does not tug on my emotional strings.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)  My thoughts: My favorite Anne Hathaway movie though not my favorite Hathaway performance.  Loaded with lots of outstanding performances…with Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci being the standouts in my mind.

Ella Enchanted (2004)  My thoughts:  I have seen this movie a few times, my oldest daughter has fond memories of this movie that is based on a popular children’s story.  I wonder what my daughter thinks about this movie now that she is older and wiser?

Get Smart (2008)   My thoughts: She takes over the role of Agent 99 that Barbara Feldon made famous on the television show…Get Smart.  A pretty funny movie….I thought a sequel was coming but it has already been 9 years since Get Smart was released.

Hoodwinked! (2005)  My thoughts:  The only movie that I actually fell asleep while watching in a movie theater…and it is only 80 minutes long!….she wisely did not appear in Hoodwinked 2.

The Hustle (2019) My thoughts: The first time this story was told, the movie starred Marlon Brando and David Niven. The result? Horrible. The second time this story was told, it starred Michael Caine and Steve Martin. The result? Funny and a classic. The third time this story was told it starred Anne and Rebel Wilson. The result? Horrible and not funny at all. Maybe the 4th telling will be good.

The Intern (2015)  My thoughts: I really liked this one….but DeNiro has a better and bigger role in this one.

Interstellar (2014)  My thoughts:  I thought this was a good but not great movie.

The Last Thing He Wanted (2020) My thoughts: Possibly the least known movie in her resume. This one is a NetFlix movie…..and it is not very good. But Anne fans will at least want to check it out.

Les Miserables (2012)  My thoughts:  So why is Les Miserables Anne Hathaway’s highest-rated movie?  Let’s see…..a box office hit, well received by critics and audiences, a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress for her, 8 Oscar nominations, 3 Oscar wins, and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her.  As for the movie?  I am not a huge musical fan….but I found this movie to be very well and done and will watch it again.  Hathaway’s part is pretty small but very memorable.  Hell, I even enjoyed the music of Russell Crowe in the movie.

Love and Other Drugs (2010) My thoughts: I remember when this movie came out and it was getting lots of buzz around it….but it failed at the box office and critics and audiences were lukewarm towards the movie…it did, however, earn Anne Hathaway a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Actress.

Nicholas Nickelby (2002)  My thoughts:  An interesting movie with lots of standout performances….but Jim Broadbent has the best role by far.

Ocean’s Eight (2018) My thoughts: Could and should have been better. An excellent cast is wasted in this dull reboot.

One Day (2011)  My thoughts: This drama that spans many years is a decent movie…. but the bummer of an ending does not make it a movie worth a second viewing.

The Other Side of Heaven (2001) My thoughts: One of Hathaway’s first starring roles and one of the few Hathaway movies that I have not seen.

Passengers (2008)  My thoughts: I watched this movie a few years ago it has an ending  M.Night Shyamalan would like….but it is not a movie that I will ever watch again…..although I will admit that I liked Patrick Wilson’s part in the movie

The Princess Diaries (2001)  My thoughts: The movie that made Anne Hathaway a star. Seems this movie gets played in my house it least once a year.  Her first of three Garry Marshall directed movies.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)   My thoughts:  Not nearly as good as the first one…but fans of the original will not be disappointed with this sequel.

Rachel Getting Married (2008)   My thoughts: Hathaway received her first Oscar® nomination for Best Actress for this movie…as for the movie…although I admire her performance in the movie…it is not a movie that I will ever watch again.

Rio (2011) My thoughts: Anne Hathaway provided the voice of Jewel in this Oscar® nominated film. We own this movie….but the kids rarely ask to watch it again.

Rio 2 (2014) My thoughts: Not very good….one Rio movie was enough for these wild and crazy birds.

Serenity (2019) My thoughts: This one is not good, but it is not nearly as bad as some people have said. I would watch it again as the twist ending is at least somewhat interesting.

Song One (2015)   My thoughts: I had never even heard of this movie before I saw it sitting on a Wal-Mart shelf for sale.  I will eventually see this movie but it is not too high on the “must watch” list.

Valentine’s Day (2010)  My thoughts: Her third Garry Marshall directed movie that she has appeared in….she is part of an ensemble cast… the movie is a pleasant enough but certainly not a classic movie.

  1. Just went through Steve’s video on Anne Hathaway, Bruce’s thoughts on her movies, and Bob’s interesting facts about the lady. All good stuff on an actress I had not thought much about until now, though I remember she was good in several films. I’ve seen 8 of the movies listed, with Interstellar being my definite favorite, even though I see it was a so-so for Bruce. I really enjoyed it both times I saw it. Other films with Anne Hathaway I liked: Brokedown Mountain (though can’t quite remember her in that one), Les Miserables, Get Smart and The Dark Knight Rises – that one rates really highly on UMR, IMDB, Letterboxd and other sites, but it didn’t grab me as much as its Batman predecessor, The Dark Knight. I’ve been successful in avoiding The Princess Diaries in my home…though who knows, I may like it 🙂

    1. Hey PhilHoF17. This page with a Cogerson breakdown on her movies was an experiment…I think overall there are about 4 or 5 pages like this…..but in the end…I stopped doing it this way. She was Jake’s wife in Brokeback Mountain. A one and done movie for me….though it does have some excellent performances. I am right there with you on The Dark Knight Rises…..it pales when compared to The Dark Knight. I like you have successful avoided The Princess Diaries….though I have heard it many times….back when he travled with our oldest daughter….she would watch this movie in our van…..I could not see the video….but heard the audio many many times. I guess one day I will see those movies from beginning to end. Good stuff as always.

  4. 1/I ALWAYS CONSIDERED Anne Hathaway a rather contrived name for an actress because it was of course the name of the real-life wife of William Shakespeare.

2/However as an actress and person Anne has her own distinct being. I have seen her on the big screen in Alice in Wonderland and heard her voice in Rio One. Wikipedia gives details of (1) 6 of her stage productions (2) 17 TV appearances by her (2) and her discography recorded from 2004-2016 – so she is multi-medium in her talents.

3/In private life Anne is an activist against arranged child marriage; has received awards for philanthropy; and has promoted increased awareness of sexism in the entertainment industry.

4/IMDB credits her with 69 acting awards and 111 noms; and her current net worth is reported as $60 million. In 2009 she was included in the prestigious Forbes Top 100 celebrities list; and in 2015 she was classified as being among the highest paid actresses worldwide.

5/In the pipeline for Anne are (1) one movie at post-production stage [The Witches a fantasy comedy] (2) three movies at pre-production stage (3) and a further one which has just been announced.

The Work Horse provides on this page a comprehensive mini-review of Anne’s films which is well worth consulting especially as Bruce has now updated the page and it well-complements Steve’s video.

Parts 2 and 3 to follow asap.

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info and trivia, much appreciated.

Glad you liked the posters and stills.

Yep, I wonder if Anne’s parents knew she had the same name as Bill Shakespeare’s old lady? Than there’s Bond girl Jane Seymour named after Henry’s third wife perhaps? 🙂

Anne was a slinky Catwoman but I suppose Michelle Pfeiffer’s still my favorite. Zoe Kravitz is the latest Catwoman if the upcoming ‘The Batman’ ever finishes filming.

The name Zoe Kravitz brought to mind the name of one of Dean Martin’s girlfriends in the Matt Helm movies – Lovey Kravezit. 🙂

One film scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Brokeback Mountain.

One film scored 9 – Les Miserables and there are several 8’s including Interstellar and Dark Knight Rises.

Interstellar is no.1 at IMDB and The Dark Knight Rises is tops at Rotten Tomatoes.

“I cry terribly easily. Just a minute ago, I was reading an article about Kate Winslet in Vogue, and I love her so much, I started crying, realizing how great she is and how far I have to go.”

“Ireland is such an amazing country, and I have this little dream in the back of my head that someday I’ll end up living there. When I’ve established myself in America and I don’t need to live near the action, so to speak, and if you’re good, the work will come to you. I feel very Irish; maybe that’s why I’ve been so lucky with my career. On my father’s side, we have relatives all over Cork and Donegal.”

  5. Added Steve’s Anne Hathaway Video to this page….which I see has to be updated….thanks for the extra work Steve…lol.

Nice selection. Her career started off so strong, yet it seems to have slowed down. She is another actress that was kind enough to send us an autograph. Overall I have seen 22 of her movies, 20 of the ones listed here. Favorites would include #21 The Intern…..fun movie…WoC really enjoyed it. #10 Meryl Streep wears Prada….my oldest daughter loves this one. #4 Les Miserables…and I do not like musicals. #2 Interstellar…need to re-watch this one. I like #3 The Dark Knight Rises….but did not love it. Good video. Voted up and shared.

      1. Good stuff Bruce, if Anne Thataway takes the time to send out autographed photos she’s okay in my book. Your 20 out of 30 beats my 13.

My favorites include – Get Smart, Colossal, Rio 1 & 2, Alice 1 & 2, The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.

I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain or the two Princess Diaries. Les Miserables was pretty good, well acted, but would have been better without all that singing what do you think? [Bruce shakes his head]

Thanks again for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.

        1. Hey Steve…..always glad to include your videos on our pages. I actually did not mind the singing in Les Miserables. Interesting that Colossal is among your favorites….it is getting a nice following…..I thought it was ok….maybe it is time to re-visit. Good stuff as always.
