UMR Reviews Belfast (2021)

In his one, a young boy and his working-class Belfast family experience the tumultuous late 1960s. The movie which was written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, is based on his childhood memories. This black and white movie looks amazing. The opening scene is now one of my favorites of all-time. It literally shows the innocence of youth being taken away in seconds. The performances throughout the movie are amazing. Judi Dench and Claran Hinds got Oscar nominations for their work, but I thought Caitriona Balfe shined the brightest in this one. Balfe reminded me of Cate Blanchett many times in this one. Final thought: The best movie of Kenneth Branagh’s career and a movie that needs to be watched.

  1. WoC and I watched Belfast last night. Bob from Belfast popped up into my mind many times while watching. According to my calculations….the Jamie Dornan character would have been about the age of Bob back in 1969 in Belfast. Bob is know in his 80s….as would be the Dornan character. I wondered if Bob had seen all the places shown at the beginning of the movie before switching to black and white. Overall I really enjoyed this movie.
