1. Christopher Joseph Columbus was born in Spangler, Pennsylvania in 1958.

2.  While at New York University’s film school at the Tisch School of the Arts, Chris Columbus was a schoolmate of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and Alec Baldwin.

3. Chris Columbus’ screenplay of Gremlins (1984), was written as a dark satire of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).

4. John Hughes hired Chris Columbus to direct 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. During pre-production, Columbus and Chevy Chase did not get along which caused Columbus to quit that project.  Columbus was amazed when a few months later, Hughes offered Columbus the chance to direct another movie.  Columbus accepted the offer and that movie, Home Alone, turned out to be one of the biggest box office movies of all-time.

5. Chris Columbus got the directing gig on Harry Potter after longtime front-runner Steven Spielberg passed on the project. He met author J.K. Rowling in England and won the job over several other candidates after promising her he would film entirely in the U.K. and use an all-British cast. Most of the crew was also British.

  1. I’ve seen 14 of the 21 films Chris Columbus films on the chart. Favorites are – Harry Potter 1 & 2, Home Alone 1 & 2, Gremlins, Percy Jackson, Mrs. Doubtfire and Young Sherlock Holmes (directed by Barry Levinson).

    I have yet to see the two Christmas Chronicles films and I’m a Kurt Russell fan, I’ll give them a go this Xmas.
