Dog Movies

Want to know the best Dog Movies?  How about the worst Dog Movies?  Curious about Dog Movie box office grosses or which Dog Movies picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Dog Movies got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

To make this list, a dog or dogs had to be the main focus of the movie….sorry John Wick, Up. & Hondo. The animal had to be a dog…..sorry Balto, Alpha & Omega and all the wolf movies.  We had to have box office grosses on the movie…..sorry Where The Red Fern Grows.  Yes, a few movies featured cats….but when it comes time to do a Cat Movies page……the dogs in those movies will invade our cat UMR page.  See a missing Dog Movie?….just put that movie in the comment section…and we will see if we can add it to the table.

Dog Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Dog Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Blue Link = Dog Movie Trailer
  • Sort by Dog Movies by stars of movies.
  • Sort Dog Movie by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Dog Movie by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Dog Movie how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Dog Movie received.
  • Sort Dog Movie by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Dog Movies Adjusted World Wide Box Office Grosses

Goldie Cogerson (March 10th 2005 – July 10th 2018)
Drivel part of the page?  Why Dog Movies and not Cat Movies?  Well the sad news is yesterday, our dog, Goldie Cogerson, passed away.  Since starting this website……I have found it therapeutic to do UMR pages on people or in this case, a pet, that recently left us.    So here you go Goldie……a tribute page to a member of the Cogerson family for over 13 years.

  1. I am a dog person. had dogs until 31 y.o. when the last 2 passed. i realized they exacerbate my asthma so much I cannot own one. my last 2 dogs gus, a miniature dachshund, and barney ,a half shepherd half basenji . as a team no dog catcher could corral them and then the dog catcher would call my mother to get them. she would do so after negotiating no tickets for dogs or owner. she would drive by , open the car door and they would jump in.
thanks for sharing your loss, a sadness shared lightens the burden.
thanks for the page. one favourite old yeller, an 8. I must have seen it a dozen of times as a child at the Saturday ” children’s day at the movies”( 2 features, several cartoons, popcorn and drink for $1.25, moms day out ) and once last month thanks to UMR, Bruce and the public library. I cried. no 10s. I agree with erin , thanks in the shadows and cogerson, really like turner and hooch but not top 350 favorites.
please consider adding the movie Michael, about 4 people and an angel and their relationship with Sparky, a dog. one of my favorites, a ten. hidden gem. Sparky only has 2 or 3 major scenes but is omnipresent. wonderful acting by Travolta, William hurt, Andie McDowell, teri garr, jean stapleton, bob Hoskins, Robert pastorelli and others, especially sparky. I love to laugh.

    1. Hey bob cox…..thanks for the kind words and the suggestions. Good to know you liked Old Yeller so much. I will try and add Michael to the page in the near future. Michael is one of WoC’s favorite movies. Sorry your dogs messed with your breathing……pets are awesome but they do bring some issues with them. Thanks again for stopping by.

  2. Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog, more of a cat girl myself, but fully know how rough it can be to lose a pet. Lots of good movies here. Look forward to the cat page.

  3. Sorry to hear of your loss Bruce, I know how it feels to lose a beloved pet.

Nice compilation of dog movies I don’t think you’ve missed any important ones, let me think…. Pixar’s Up had a lot of dogs in it, does that count?

Let’s see I’ve seen…. 20 of the 87 on the chart. Probably more, especially the Disney dog movies when I was a kid. If I was a dog person I would have watched a lot more but I’m afraid I’m one of the ‘Cat People’ [cue scary music]

Disney animation Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmations are two of my favorites here, good to see they did well in the charts, huge box office hits too. I haven’t seen any of the live action Dalmation movies.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….I have seen 30 of theses movies. So i have a slight lead on you. One of the rules we used was the dog or dogs had to be the prime focus of the movie. Up’s dogs were supporting characters. Thanks for the condelances on Goldie….it has been a difficult and strange week for sure. Good feedback as always.

  4. I had 5 dogs as a kid, none more than a year. One ran away on Christmas Eve and we went looking the next day Christmas but no trace. It was very warm that Christmas, about 66 degrees in New York and I was 7.

How about the 8 Rusty pictures Columbia put out in the late 40’s with Ted Donaldson always popping up on Turner Classic movies. One of the great who are they actresses from the first Oracle of Bacon list Ann Doran plays the mother in all those films. Rusty is the dog.

    1. Hey Dan. Wow, that is some bad luck with dogs. I have 4 my whole life….three lived well past their life ranges,…the First was the only one that died at a young age. What are the names of the Rusty movies? Thanks for the visit, the kind words and the suggestions. Good stuff.

      1. Outside the dog that ran away my folks gave the dogs away after a year or so. One they said knocked me down in the crib. I’ve had cats since, 2 now one going on 11 and one 2 1/2.

        Adventures of Rusty (1945)
        The Return of Rusty (1946)
For the Love of Rusty (1947)
        The Son of Rusty (1947)
        My Dog Rusty (1948)
        Rusty Leads the Way (1948)
        Rusty Saves a Life (1949)
        Rusty’s Birthday (1949)

        1. Hey Dan….thanks for the list of Rusty movies…..a quick look does not show much with regards to box office information…..but they must have generated some decent revenue….especially with so many movies made.

Glad you have had better luck with cats…..one day we will do a cat movie page. Thanks for the visit, the comment and the information.
