Possibly Interesting Facts On Jane Alexander

1. Jane Seyferth Quigley was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1939.   She was married to Robert Alexander from 1962 to 1974….thus Jane Quigley became Jane Alexander.

2.  Jane Alexander’s major break in acting came in 1967 when she played Eleanor Backman in the original production of Howard Sackler’s The Great White Hope at Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Like her co-star, James Earl Jones, she went on to play the part both on Broadway (1968), winning a Tony Award for her performance, and in the film version (1970), which earned her an Oscar® nomination.

3. Jane Alexander is one of only a few performers to receive an Oscar® nomination for their movie debut, as Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Great White Hope (1970), and one of even fewer performers to receive an Oscar® nomination the same role in which they had already received Broadway’s Tony® award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for “The Great White Hope” (1969), on stage, one year earlier.

4. Jane Alexander has appeared in three films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar®: All the President’s Men (1976), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and The Cider House Rules (1999). Of those, only Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) won Best Picture.

5. Jane has triumphed just as notably on TV. She perfectly embodied the unglamorous role of Anna Eleanor Roosevelt opposite Edward Herrmann’s FDR in the TV movies Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977) and was Emmy-nominated both times for her efforts. Decades later she would portray FDR’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, in HBO’s Warm Springs (2005) starring Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon and won the coveted award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’. Throughout the years she would play a myriad of quality leads in such TV-movies as A Circle of Children (1977); Arthur Miller’s Playing for Time (1980); which earned her a second Emmy, the title role in Calamity Jane (1984); Malice in Wonderland (1985), in which she portrayed notorious gossip maven Hedda Hopper; Blood & Orchids (1986), and; In Love and War (1987).

Hey Flora…..thanks for checking out our Jane Alexander page. Tally counts: Cogerson 16, Steve 7, Cogerson #2 5 and you 3. I have seen all the ones you have seen. All The President’s Men is one of my all-time favorite movies….and it only gets better with each passing year. Brubaker is somewhat dated, but a good movie. As for The Cider House Rules….my favorite, Michael Caine got his second Oscar for that one…so it has a special place in my heart. Good stuff as always.

To my surprise I have actually seen a few of these movies and heard of a handful of others, great post!

    Seen: 5/25 or 20%
Favorite Top 10: Glory, what can I say, this movie is spectacular!
UMR Snub (Too High/Too Low): Not enough data for a calculated decision.
Guilty Pleasure: Probably Terminator Salvation, the first 15 minutes is awesome, takes some bad plot turns, but it was nice to see Bale as Connor and the return of Kyle Reese.

Hey SoC1….thanks for checking out all of these pages today. Tally count. Cogerson 15, Steve 7, Cogerson #2 5 and Flora 3. I am right there with you on Glory. I did not like Terminator Salvation…and I can still remember arguing with Scotty about it on the way home from the theater…..I will give it credit for trying something different in the Terminator world…..everything else in that series has taken the original story and tried to trick us into thinking it was something different. I had such high hopes when I read Christian Bale was going to be John Connor. I thought the late Anton Yelchin was good as Kyle Reese….easily the second best Kyle to date. Good stuff.

I’ve seen 6 of the 25 films on the chart, favorites are – All the Presidents Men, City Heat, Glory and Terminator Salvation. I’ve also seen The Cider House Rules and The Unborn.

I’ve probably watched City Heat the most from that bunch, way back in the 80s, and that’s where I remember Jane Alexander best.

Good stuff Bruce. The ghost of Hirschhorn smiles proudly. Vote Up!

Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our Jane Alexander page. I have seen 16 of the movies. My favorites would also include All The President’s Men (a Top 100 movie for me). Glory and City Heat. I like you probably re-watch City Heat the most. FYI Did you know Blake Edwards was supposed to direct that one? He left the project and Richard Benjamin took over. Clint and Burt are fun to watch together. I like the last line….I hope Ghost Joel is appreciating all of these shout outs. Good stuff.

Hey Mike…that error is fixed. I actually wrote and published this page a few weeks ago. Originally I was not going to include the trivia….but when I made it the post of the day….I figured I should add the trivia. I keep thinking I should just unleash lots of pages….with just a brief description and the two tables. I could put out 10 a day just doing it that way….yet everytime I write a page I go back add in more photos, include the trivia and do the first part of the page. Maybe one day I will do it…but I failed on this Jane Alexander page as well. Thanks for the catch.

Another Joel subject off the book. She had 4 Oscar nomination in her first 9 movies….that is a great percentage.
