  1. HI BRUCE: Thanks for your detailed feedback. Critics would agree with your suggestion that Brando’s performance was “strange”. Indeed one critic’s headline for his review of the movie was “Strange one from the west”.

Brando’s Robert Lee Clayton was in fact a paid serial-killer and he adopted various disguises to take his victims by surprise. For example on one occasion he goes into drag as a grandmother and runs amok like Mother Bates out west.

His costumes for those disguises caused one reviewer to opine “Not since the days of Sarah Bernhardt has a performer taken the art of dressing-up to the lengths Brando does in Missouri Breaks.”

Sarah was a French stage actress of the late 19th/early 20th centuries who dressed extravagantly for her roles and in fact often in men’s clothing as she played many male roles in her time. It could have been the cross-dressing that encouraged the critic to link her antics with those of Brando in ‘Breaks’

The ending to Missouri Breaks was dramatic and sudden. Brando’s Lee Clayton gets his comeuppance when he sleeps overnight on the prairie. Something startles him so that his eyes open and he sees Nicholson leaning over him saying “Wake Up – your throat’s just been cut!”

Earlier in the movie Jack surprises Clayton taking a bath and training a gun on him looks down into the bath and says “Gosh you’re not much down there either!” Anyway take care.

    1. Hey Bob…..thanks for the information on Brando’s performance in The Missouri Breaks. I do remember the scene that Brando’s character comes to end….that might be the best part of the movie. Good stuff.

  2. I think that I have discussed Randy Quaid before on this site in connection with 1976’s The Missouri Breaks co-starring Brando and Nicholson.

Brando like Sinatra in his day got to dictate precisely when he would be available for work on a movie so that those that wanted their services had to either delay production or work round them until they were good and ready to come on set.

Apparently Brando didn’t arrive on the set of The Missouri Breaks until a lot of the film was in the can. According to Randy the anticipation and excitement among the other cast members in the weeks that they waited for Marlon reached fever pitch.

When the Great Day dawned Randy with a bunch of them decided to travel to a hilltop overlooking a gorge through which the Brando train would come.

However the train was considerably-delayed and they took turns keeping lookout. It was on Randy’s shift that he spotted the train’s smoke gushing through the gorge; so Randy excitedly shouted to the others “He’s coming! He’s coming! He’s coming!” and everyone broke into a round of applause.

Unfortunately I’ve seen just 4 of Randy’s movies: The Missouri Breaks and Last Picture Show/Independence Day and Days of Thunder, my fave among the 4 and one of the few Tom Cruise films that have interested me.

Randy did a fair bit of TV work and in a 1984 made-for-television production of Streetcar Named Desire he won a supporting actor Primetime Emmy nomination for the role of Mitch which was played by Karl Malden in the 1951 cinematic film. Treat William played the notorious Stanley in that 1984 TV movie.

Sadly Randy’s net worth today is said by Celebrity Net Worth site to be in the NEGATIVE by 1 million dollars There was a time when he was the owner of multiple millions, but all of it is said to have vanished because of various controversies in his life – for example allegedly defrauding an innkeeper in Santa Barbara by using an invalid credit card to pay a $10,000 bill.

    1. Hey Bob. Good information on Quaid and Brando. Lots of interesting information on the making of The Missouri Breaks. That movie has one of the strangest Brando performances ever…at least in my humble opinion. I have you topped in the tally contest….34 to 4. Interesting that you like Days of Thunder…..Quaid is pretty good in the movie. I did not know Quaid got an Emmy nomination for Streetcar. It is sad that Quaid had some many issues the last decade or so….but it sounds like that is behind and he is happily leaving in Vermont. Maybe some more Quaid roles are coming. Good stuff as always.

    1. Give me: National Lampoons Vacation, Kingpin and Independence Day. So 2 out of three when looking at David’s Top 3.

      1. Hey Taylor….hmmmm….naming my top 3 Randy movies. Quick Change & Christmas Vacation are the two I really like and the ones I re-watch the most. As for number 3….I guess I have to go with The Long Riders. That is one of my favorite Walter Hill movies. So we have a third of the same movies. Good to hear from you.

    2. Hey David. First of all thanks for checking out our Randy Quaid movie page I like all three of the ones you picked as your Top 3….though we do not have a match…as my Top 3 would be Quick Change, Xmas Vacation and The Long Riders. Good stuff!

  3. I have seen 34 of Randy’s movies. That includes 5 in movie theaters. I saw National Lampoon’s Vacation, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Independence Day, The Ice Harvest (with WoC) and No Man’s Land in theaters.

  4. Back from our whirlwind mid-west vacation of Omaha, Des Moines, and both Kansas Cities, here we are back in New York with Randy Quaid. Randy is # 259 on the 2021 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000. Randy is also the # 274 most connected actor of the 1990’s. He’s not on any other decade list but cumulatively he ranks higher with every decade combined. These are the actors on the 2021 list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan. Welcome back from your whirlwind mid-west vacation. We will be traveling in about a week….first to Alabama to see WoC’s side of the family and then Boston for my first trip to Fenway Park….a bucket list item for every since I became a huge fan of Red Sox legend Dwight Evans. Side note…Dewey has acually appeared in a movie, not playing himself…I bet you can guess it.

As always thanks for the awesome lists on Mr. Quaid’s career. Although he is a supporting player, I actually think his career has been more impressive than his little brother’s career. I was not thinking that way before writing this page. His Oracle ranking is pretty high….I imagine he would have a Top 50 spot if he had not pretty much retired in the mid 2000s. Hard to believe there have only been 4 or 5 Quaid movie appearances in the last 15 years. As for most frequent Oracle co-star…many many people with 3 movies….so many in fact that I lost count. 34 Oscar winning co-stars is less than I would have guessed. Good stuff as always.
