Lee Grant (1925-) is an Oscar®-winning American actress and director.   After making a major splash for her first role in 1951’s Detective Story (Oscar nomination) she was blacklisted in 1952 when she had refused to testify against her husband (screenwriter Arnold Madoff) at the HUAC hearings.   After she was removed from the blacklist in 1962, she rebuilt her acting career in films and in television. Her IMDb page shows 105 acting credits since to 1950. This page will rank 37 Lee Grant movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television roles, uncredited roles and movies not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. As a kid I knew Lee Grant mostly from the horror sequel Damien Omen II, later I discovered she appeared in other films too. 😉

I’ve seen 10 of the 37 films on the chart, favorites are – In the Heat of the Night, Airport 77, Marooned, Damien Omen II and of course…. The Swarm.

I’ve only seen bits of Valley of the Dolls. I watched Shampoo for the first time a few years ago, it’s not a favorite.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve….gotta admit…..my knowledge of Lee Grant before this page was pretty limited. I knew she was a supporting actress, I knew she was an Oscar winner, I knew she was the other lady in Shampoo (after Goldie and Julie), I knew she was part of The Swarm cast, I knew Bruce Willis fired her from a movie and that she torched him in her book and that I enjoyed her in Defending Your Life.

I find it fascinating…that she got an Oscar nomination for her first big movie…and then got sent to Siberia for not giving names in the Communist witchhunt of the 1950s….and then after a 11 year exile she came back to do all the things I knew about her. That is a pretty impressive turn around.

Tally count…Flora 13, me 11, you 10 and Bob 6. So actually pretty close.

I would recommend the movie Defending Your Life. Lee Grant plays the prosecutor to Rip Torn’s defense attorney. Albert Brooks is the recently deceased man who has to Defend His Life. Meryl Streep is the love interest. I find it a very enjoyable movie with a nice twist on the afterlife.

As for your favorites…I watch The Swarm every few years….a bad movie that is still fun to watch…the movie that kills the most Oscar winners?….maybe it is. I think the same thinking goes for Airport 77 (bad but fun) and In The Heat of the Night is a classic. Good stuff as always.

  2. First of all, you have to fix the second paragraph. You still have Katherine Ross movies listed as the best known films (The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Stepford Wives).

I have seen 13 Lee Grant movies.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is In The Heat of the Night.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Airport 77.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Swarm.

    Favourite Lee Grant Movies:

In the Heat of the Night
    The Detective Story
    Bouna Vista, Mrs. Campbell
    Mulholland Drive
    Middle of the Night

Other Lee Grant Movies I Have Seen:

    Shampoo
    Valley of the Dolls
    Divorce, American Style
    Plaza Suite
Marooned – not enough Gregory Peck
    There Was a Crooked Man
    The Landlord
    The Swarm

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for catching that error….apparently I had two Lee Grant pages going on….and I saved the wrong one…..but now Katharine Ross’ presence has been erased from this page.

13 Lee Grant movies seen…that tops Steve and myself….but it was close…as I have seen 11 of her movies and Steve has seen 10 of her movies. Bob is at 6….though he saw her first movie and then only 5 more.

With the cast of Airport 77….have to say I am surprised you have not seen that movie….granted….it is horrible.

I have only seen two of your favorites…In The Heat of the Night and Mulholland Drive….both were pretty small roles for her. I want to see Detective Story.

Of the other ones you have seen….I have seen 6 of them. The Swarm is guilty pleasure…but a bad movie, There Was A Crooked Man was enjoyable….and the rattler in the bag has always stuck with me, Shampoo…massive hit…that is ok…very dated and Valley of Dolls….see my Shampoo mini-review. Good feedback.

  3. Lee Grant has had an astonishing 70-year long career in television and on the big screen -1951 until present. Although as faithfully recorded above her last film [and indeed her last television] performance was in 2005, she released a video short this year called “Lee Grant : Reflections” and a further feature film has just reached post-production stage- “Killian and the Comeback Kids” though she is well down the cast list for it.

I have seen just 6 of her movies – Detective Story [in my Castle Cinema days, it being a Paramount production!] Storm Fear, In the Heat of the Night, Valley of the Dolls, There was a Crooked Man and Omen 2 – but I regret not having seen more of them because I found her a very sexy lady as the guest villain(ess) in 1971’s episode of the Columbo TV series called “Ransom for a Dead Man” in which I thought which she gave a brilliant performance. My judgement and taste in that respect seem confirmed by her receiving an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in that role.

Wikipedia seems to think that there is some doubt about her age which it puts as being between 91 and 93 years [your own mention of it favours the latter] but whatever the precision of the matter she has undoubtedly been a great professional over a stunningly-long period and [even in the absence of Master recognition] therefore deserves this new page. IMDB credits Lee with 9 acting awards and 18 noms and her reported official net worth is $15 million. “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob…..I had no idea that she got an Oscar nomination right out of the gate…and then her reward was 11 years on the blacklist. That took away her prime movie making years…26 to 37….only two years away from the curse of 39. So her career to me is even more impressive. Overall 4 Oscar nominations..with one win. Yet another mistake…as her win for Shampoo is not showing up…..I can fix that when the database works it’s way through the Halle Berry correction.

I did not know her birth year was shaky. Hopefully she will not lose two years like Doris Day….Day went from 93 to 95 in a day….lol. Impressive that you saw in Detective Story at The Castle. I think any movie for a 90 plus year old is impressive….even if Lee Grant is well down the list of cast members for Killian and the Comeback Kids.

Lee Grant is yet another person that has written a book that just crushes Bruce Willis. Grant was directing Willis in a movie when Willis had her fired after 20 days of shooting. The film never resumed…..to make up for it…Willis signed a 3 movie deal with Disney to make up for the cost of the movie. Quick summary of that here. https://lostmediawiki.com/Broadway_Brawler_(lost_unfinished_Bruce_Willis_film;_1997)

      Good stuff as always.

      1. HI BRUCE Thanks for you feedback on Lee Grant. Two birthday dates a few years apart are also actually quoted somewhere for my Joan, with historians opining that the confusion arises from Crawford manipulating dates to attempt to hide her true age. I bet she didn’t fool that vicious, morbid old nemesis “39” though. However he didn’t seem to be able to get his act together in her case because she won an Oscar at 41 [or possibly older depending on her actual date of birth] and her stardom lasted into her early fifties.

Interesting link about the ex-Mr Gimme More. One can see why Brucie might well have been taken off Lee’s Christmas card list. Indeed there are also many members of the public who are on record as saying that Brucie can be a bit of an a** h*** at times. Reportedly he had massive property holdings [a grocery store, restaurant etc] in a small US town – I forget its name- which gave a lot of employment to folks in the backwater concerned. One night though apparently something had set him off and in a towering rage he went about the town verbally abusing people and closing down all his business interests and at a stroke robbing many of their livelihood, which of course had a wider domino negative effect given how much of the town’s economy depending on him and the wages of those whom he employed.

Assuming those reports are true I am reminded of the 1955 western A Lawless Street I which in order to thwart the rich bad guys trying to control the town Randy moves through it like a scythe single-handedly closing down all their saloons and taking out their paid hit man [Michael Pate].

Locals of another US town complained too about Redford exploiting their town to shoot a film of his and then causing pandemonium when he pulled up stumps in a way that left the town in a financial mess.

    2. Best POSTERS in Halle Berry Video 1/Catwoman 2/Gothika 3/Perfect Stranger [surprise though Halle getting billed before Demi’s former doormat] 4/Frankie & Alice 5/Robots 6/Things Lost in the Fire 7/Swordfish 8/Die Another Day 9/Jungle Fever 10/foreign language one for Kingsman 11/Bulworth 12/Joel’s Ball 13/John Wick 3.

Top notch STILLS 1/Halle and Brucie in Perfect Stranger 2/two for Flintstones 3/Boomerang 4/Robots 5/two for Catwoman 6/sexy Halle in bikini in Die Another Day 7/Kingsman 8/Executive Decision9/Halle looking appealing on the couch 10/two for John Wick 3 11/ closing solo of a happy Halle.

In addition you hav a long run of posters and stills for the X Men franchise. I do not like those movies but I found all your posters and stills for the films stunning and probably more than anything else in your video they raised my overall rating to 98.5% – all-in-all a hugely enjoyable presentation.

Ignoring Rango which WH is in the process of removing altogether from Halle’s charts you and he agree on 5 of her Top 6 best reviewed flicks with you going for Cloudy Atlas and him plumping instead for Bulworth.

That’s almost a full house in terms of Top 6 agreement between you but the two of you are very far apart for Catwoman which you rank 26th out of 26 movies and give a 43% rating and he awards it a 24% one [savage for even that ole ratings warrior The Work Horse] and he ranks it second from the very bottom of his Reviewed list of the 37 movies. I’ve never seen it so I can’t comment but IMDB comes down in roughly the middle of the pair of you with a 33% rating

      1. Thanks Bob, if you can copy and paste this to Bruce’s Halle Berry page, I’ll post my reply. Maybe Bruce can help?

    1. Hey Dan. Thanks for these Lee Grant lists. Earlier today I guessed Andy Garcia’s Oracle ranking pretty well….I failed miserably when it came to guessing Grant’s ranking. I figured there was very little chance she was on the list….and yet….there she is….sitting in the 975th spot. Granted…she might not be able to maintain that spot for too long.

First list…I did not notice any actor or actress with more than 2 movies with Lee Grant. Granted (my favorite word today?) lots have 2 movies with her….including many legends like Douglas, Fonda and Matthau.

Second list…..Thank you The Swarm and Airport 77…..those two disaster movies…both of which were destroyed by reviewers make up over 25% of her Oscar winning-co stars. Good information as always.
