  1. HI BRUCE

Good rundown of ‘old timers’ who are still active.

Sir Maurice for example is getting to the stage where Hollywood should think of giving him if not an hon Oscar then the equivalent of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal that the military over here hands out to its long-serving soldiers who also have an unblemished behaviour record.

Though if Crowe and Depp are around in old age they would be entitled to only half of the medal – and even then might have to share it!

  2. I have seen 3 Matt Dillon movies. In order of preference, they are:

    The Outsiders
    In & Out
    Rumble Fish

I was an extra on the first episode of Wayward Pines. It was exciting, but an exhausting shoot. The TV show filmed its exteriors near where I live in the Fraser Valley.

I am quite familiar with Gunsmoke.

    1. Hey Flora….very cool that you were an extra on the first episode of Wayward Pines. That is something I did not know about you. I am impressed. I will have to track down that episode and see if I can spot you. I see Matt Dillon appeared on that show 10 times and that included the first episode. Too bad we do not have a television page….or you could be listed in the co-star column. I have seen all 3 of the ones you have seen. I would say The Outsiders is my favorite of those three….Rumble Fish was ok. In and Out had some funny moments. Good stuff as always.

  3. I saw Liars Moon in Los Angeles back in 1982 (the film never played New York). I saw The Big Town in 1987 in London a week before it opened here. Mr. Dillon is # 564 on the December 15, 2019 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list; these are the actors on the list he appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan….thanks for these lists on Matt Dillon. Before doing this page on Dillon, I was not even aware of the movie Liar’s Moon. The trailer looks like it is a story that has been told many times before and many times after it. Liar’s Moon did not play in New York? That is very strange indeed. Not surprised he is on the Top 1000 Oracle list. Diane Lane looks like his most frequent co-star. Not too many Oscar winning co-stars. As always….thanks for sharing this information. Now I go to work…took a half day today….after today…only 4 more days of school.

  4. Wasn’t there a famous Marshall Matt Dillon in westerns? Anyone? Nope? You sure? 🙂

I’ve seen 7 of the 50 films on the chart, less than I thought. None of them big favorites but I did like – There’s Something About Mary and Wild Things. I also have Crash and The Outsiders in my collection, good films but don’t watch them often.

Guys I would say Matt was more a supporting actor than lead. Which was the most successful film in which he was the main lead? I think it’s The Flamingo Kid.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…you are correct…Marshall Mat Dillon was the sheriff on Gunsmoke for over a quarter of a century on American television. Sadly….not many of the younger generation have any idea of that sheriff or that show. Tally count….7….lower than I thought. I have seen 24. That is also lower than I thought it was going to be. I would say….when it comes to bigger budget movies, Matt Dillon is now, indeed, a supporting actor. However…on smaller budget movies, he is still the main man. He had that title in the early 1980s as well. His most recent movie, The House That Jack Built was a movie that fits into the second category. Lead role in a small budget movie. I want to see that movie…which has lots of fans and lots of haters. It should be interesting at least. There’s Something About Mary and Wild Things are probably his best movies. The Outsiders is a fun movie to watch if only to see….the young pups…Swayze, Sheen, Estevez, Machhio, Cruise, Lane and C. Thomas Howell. Good feedback as always.

  5. “Matt Dillon has many attributes to make him star material.————Best of all he has natural acting ability.—– [he has] the combination of vulnerability and strength that guarantees him a permanent place on the screen.”

Those quotes are from the beginning, middle and end of a longer review of Matt’s capabilities by One Who [as Eastwood kept saying in 1993’s In the Line of Fire] “Knows About Such Things!” I have seen just 5 of the Matt Dillon movies in the above charts-

To Die For – my own fave among the 5.
    Going in Style
Kiss Before Dying-poor remake of the Robert Wagner 1956 one**
    Wild Things
    The House that Joel Built.

**The producers wanted River Phoenix for the Dillion role in 1991 but he repeatedly turned them down despite many increased money offers to him. Both versions are based on the 1953 book by Ira Levin which in 1954 won “Best First Novel” prize. The Wagner version was Joanne Woodward’s 2nd film. Wagner’s best role in my opinion, as the murderous villain who throws his pregnant girlfriend off a roof..

The Master got it spot on about Dillon’s acting career durability because 36 years after the former wrote those words way back in 1983, Matt is still going strong as an actor. However in my perception he was never a front line box office star. He has only 4 Cogerson 100 million crashers and the final one of them was a long 13 years ago, You Me and Dupree in 2006 in which he was 3rd billed to Owen Smith and Kate Hudson.

It has gotten even worse for him as the years have gone on, with his last 15 films attracting an overall adjusted domestic US gross of just around $300 million – ie an average of only $20 million per movie in the States.

However his career has proven reasonably lucrative for him with his net worth being quoted as $40 million. IMDB credits him with 21 acting awards and 28 nominations, so that coupled with Hirsch’s blessing means in my book that Matt deserves this new page which is “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our latest UMR page…Mr. Matt Dillon…..or number 299….as he is the 299th Joel Rating The Movie Star subject to get a UMR page. Dillon was the youngest subject to get a section in the Joel book….barely beating out Eddie Murphy for that title….3 years. I love the trailer for Kiss Me Dying is interesting….it is the trailer sent to video store owners. I remember looking at those trailers all the time…as they were trying to get the owners to buy lots of copies for an upcoming VHS release. Good stats on his acting accolades and his net worth. Surprised that you have seen The House That Jack Built…..seems that movie is getting lots of mixed reactions…from people loving it….to people walking out on it. So where does Bob fall? Hate it? Love It? As always….good feedback.

      1. HI BRUCE

Yes, I was surprised that Matt made Joel’s 1983 Book of Terror as Dillon’s career didn’t begin until 1979 and he would have made only 5 or 6 cinematic releases [and one TV movie] when Hirsch was doing the 1st draft of his masterpiece. And it occurred to me that Matt might be one of the youngest, or even THE youngest as you have since confirmed, victim[s] or proteges of The Great One.

Yours Truly will have to “pass” on the quality The House That Joel Built. It was given a small art-house release in Ireland before Xmas last year. I fell asleep after the first 20 mins and W o Bob didn’t wake me in the cinema so maybe I shouldn’t have included it in Dillon’s movies I have actually watched, but the five- movies list I have given you will anyway hardly put me well up the “have-seen” lists providers on this site for Matt’s films.

All that said the movie earned Matt nominations for the Bodil award and the Fangoria Chainsaw awards in 2019.

        1. Hey Bob…..yep…he was the youngest….and only had 6 movies listed in his section of the book….but give Joel some credit for picking a very young actor that has been working steadily for the 36 years since the book was published. Of that 410 people picked…not many can make that claim. Most have stopped making movies at this point. Caine, Caan, Pacino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dillon, Hopkins, Dreyfuss come to mind for those still pretty active. Even the next youngest pup….Eddie Murphy….seems to have stopped making movies….one movie…Mr. Church since 2012 for Mr. Murphy. Thanks for the mini-review of The House That Jack Built……or at least thanks for the review of your nap…lol. Good stuff as always.
