  1. I saw 11 including 7 of top 16. one 10 not a favorite: nobodys fool (I am a sucker for all things bruce willis). no 9s, 2 eights: drowning pool and milagro beanfield war both hidden gems.

I have not seen a movie she has made better than it would be without her..nice rack flaunted regularly.

  2. Back in the heyday of video stores either the New York Daily News or the New York Post did a story on DVD’s/tapes that had never been rented. One store had Melanie’s Cherry 2000 as theirs.

Melanie is # 294 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list (amazing isn’t it). These are the other actors on the list she has appeared with..

    1. Hey Dan
      1. As always….thanks for putting these lists together….they are always appreciated.
      2. Funny about Cherry 2000 not being rented. That is one of my guilty pleasures….I proudly own it the DVD…and watch it pretty regularly…..but I realize it is far from being a good movie.
      3. Still speaking about Cherry 2000 (hey you brought it up)….there is a scene involving a big magnet and a crane…as many times as I have seen the movie…I have never even come close to understanding the logic of the situation….but Ben Johnson is always at the end of the scene waiting on our heroes ……like it was the original plan.
      4. So she has a good spot on the Oracle list……41 movies on my table is not too bad…so I can see the ranking being that high.
      5. 30 Oscar winning co-stars is a good total….and above average when looking at other actresses.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. Angry Melanie Griffith shouting at Tom Hanks in gulty pleasure favorite Bonfire of the Vanities – “I hope they hang you in the electric chair.”

I’ve seen 9 of the 41 films on the chart. Favorites are – Body Double, Pacific Heights and Bonfire of the Vanities.

I haven’t seen Nobody’s Fool or Night Moves, the latter is a movie I’ve wanted to see and never got round to it, it rarely gets shown on TV.

Looking at the trivia – Demi Moore and Melanie Griffith, Razzie worst actress legends. 🙂

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!

      1. Hey Bob…no Razzies…but there were the Golden Turkeys and Harvard’s Bad Movie Awards before the Razzies. To my recollection the great M. Loy (the greatest female box office star of all-time) did not win any of those awards. Good stuff.

        1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for the lowdown on even more awards that Myrna didn’t win. I suppose if that list was to be ever completed even IMDB would run out of pages!

Actually whilst iMDB does includes the Razzies in a star’s list of awards/noms I always thought that a bit of a misnomer at least within the spirit of things: an award/nom is usually regarded as a positive achievement and not a put-down.

Mind you if Razzies had been positive instead of negative The Thin Woman probably would still not have won one!

Hope your wedding etc are going well.

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for stopping by. Good quote from Bonfire of the Vanities. I actually think that movie is aging pretty well. I like Hanks in the movie…Griffith is fun as the rich lady who only cares about herself. Bruce is actually the weak link in that one. Tally count…20 for me 9 for you. I have seen and like all your favorites. Body Double was most watch when it played on HBO when I was a teenager. I was so in love with her after Body Double, Cherry 2000 and Something Wild. I would recommend Nobody’s Fool…a fun movie with a great performance from Paul Newman. Bruce, Melaine, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jessica Tandy give great support. My favorite line in the movie is a judge talking about Hoffman’s character who is a power hungry deputy….”You know my thoughts on letting idiots have guns.” Moore, Griffith and Madonna Razzie Hall Of Famers. Good stuff as always.

  4. Despite what I have said in Part One ,Wikipedia credits Melanie with a net personal worth of $30 million though the Celebrity Net Worth site says the figure is actually $40 million. Those substantial figures, whichever one is correct, can probably be explained by the fact that on top of her big screen career she has worked extensively in television appearing in 32 productions between 1976 and this year and has also done some stage work, for example playing Roxie Hart on Broadway in 2003. Her TV appearance this year has been in an episode of the comedy series SMILF called “Sex makes it Less Formal.” The series stars, and was created and is written and directed by Frankie Shaw

Accordingly despite her big screen disappointments she may well regard herself as a reasonably successful actress overall. I actually last saw her in a TV documentary in which she and her mother Tippi Hendren complained bitterly about the way Alfred Hitchcock had allegedly mistreated Tippi during her own heyday as a movie star. That means of course that if either mother or daughter ever makes a big screen comeback Steve Lensman won’t watch their films!

Ironically though Melanie appeared in a 1985 episode of TV’s “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” series. Although Hitch died in 1980 the Master of Suspense was posthumously able to present the crime, horror etc episodes in the new series via use of footage from his series of the same name which ran from 1955-62. Both series were successful

Anyway who would begrudge her a Cogerson page? – so “Voted Up!”

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for the comments on Melanie Griffith. She had a good run…amazingly Working Girl was the peak. Not sure many people saw that back then. Before Working Girl, she got great reviews for Something Wild and Body Double (though the movie got destroyed). I first noticed her in Something Wild….as well as the first time I noticed Ray Liotta…both are very memorable in that movie. Body Double was a DePalma Hitchcock rip off…..as it combined Vertigo and Rear Window. Good stats on her other movies….those are not great numbers for sure. I think it is safe to say she is more of celebrity than a movie star these days. But she had a good run.

    2. Hey Bob….I have heard the tales of filming The Birds…..not sure Melanie would have the best memory of that movie filming. Certainly, Tippi’s memory would be the more accurate of those two. Seems unfair to rip Hitch decades after his death..as he can not defend himself. That being said, there are many stories of how he was difficult to work with….so I guess we will never know. Thanks for the vote up.

      1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for your thoughts on Melanie and Hitch and your general feed back on my own post.

When I make comparisons on the career of stars I tend to compare any artist with the very great. For example I was contrasting Melanie’s career as a star with Joan, Liz, Doris etc and not of course with The Thin Woman. After all as I’ve said before THIS is Cogerson where the raison detre is to separate the chaff from the wheat.

If Hitch’s treatment was as bad as Tippi claimed it could have affected her is a way tha impacted on Melanie so she too would have a legitimate grievance,

Give my New Year greetings to your wider family

  5. Of all of the big screen career declines that I have seen Melanie’s has been one of the swiftest, most complete and, given the high promise held out by Working Girl, one of the saddest. Bruce’s tables above faithfully record the woeful tale-

1/In terms of movie stardom she can be described as what the record industry call a “one hit wonder”. Only 3 of her movies crashed the Cogerson $100 million barrier and in two of them she had just supporting roles, one of which [Joel Little 2] was voice only.

2/Since that voice role way back in 2002 she is credited above with just 9 movies whose adjusted overall domestic gross is about $22 million– a paltry average of merely $2.4 million per movie.

3/The overall adjusted domestic gross of her 38 movies outside the 100 million plus bracket is approx $685 million –a paltry $18 million per movie.
