Ranking 1999 Movies

To make this list a movie had to be made in 1999.  Obviously many movies made in 1998 earned box office dollars in 1999.  On the other side many movies made in 1999 made money in 2000 and later.   This page will looks at over 250 movies made in 1999.  The movies are listed in two massive tables that lets you rank the movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information.

1999 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort 1999 Movies by movie titles and movie trailers
  • Sort 1999 Movies by the stars or in some cases the director of the movie.
  • Sort 1999 Movies by domestic adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort 1999 Movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each 1999 Movies received and how many Oscar® wins each 1999 Movies received.
  • Sort 1999 Movies by Ultimate Movie Ranking Score (UMR).  Our UMR score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. I saw 65 including 26 of top 27. 10s and favorites: green mile, matrix, notting hill, Thomas crown affair(much better than original), girl interrupted, runaway bride (love Julia Roberts surely not inflated by my recent divorce 1996. 10s not favorites: fight club, insider, American beauty, sixth sense. 9s not favorites: the hurricane, sleepy hollow, cider house rules, magnolia, music of the heart, being john Malkovich, star trek episode 1, message in abottle, for the love of the game, toy story 2. no hidden gems probably means I was too generous with 9s.and 10s.

    1. Hey bob cox….thanks for checking out this yearly review. It has been strange not tackling a new yearly review….for years I was writing a yearly review about once every two years…never thought I would finish that project. Yes….I know….there are some 1920s years still to do….lol. 65 is a pretty stout tally count. I agree and love all of your favorite “10”s. I think both Thomas Crowns are good movies…but I love the ending of the original much more. Sorry to hear about your recent divorce. Hope you are well into the recovery process. Good point about the hidden gems. There is a book out there that 1999 is one of the greatest years in movie history….looking at all of your 10s and 9s I think you might agree. Good stuff as always.

  2. I have seen 17 of the top 30 highest grossing movies in the above chart and here are my own personal Top 20 faves in no particular order. The sample % rating figures quoted are Cogerson Review column ones – I wouldn’t have dared replace them with my own!

1999 was the year in which I visited the States and stayed in Atlanta with my daughter for 3 weeks. The 4 films asterisked [along with Depp’s The Astronaut’s Wife] are ones that I watched while I was there and others in WH’s 1999 charts were being advertised as future attractions at the cinemas that I visited.

Accordingly this new review is “Voted Up!” – highly – as much for nostalgia on my part as for its own fine qualities as a comprehensive review of the movies market-place that year.

    1. Hey Bob….thanks for checking out our 1999 movie ranking page. 17 of the Top 30 is pretty impressive….coming in at a 56.66% clip. Wow…it has been 20 years since you visited the good ole USA. I have seen all of your favorites…..glad to see The Sixth Sense make that list. Payback is an underrated movie for sure…..as is The Winslow Boy. Sorry that The Astronaut’s Wife was one of the movies you saw in America….so many good movies in 1999…..and you got to see one of the worst. As always…I appreciate your feedback.

  3. 1999 – considered by film buffs as the last great movie year – before cartoons and comic books took over the business… hey I love cartoons and comic books! 🙂

So what was the previous ‘greatest movie year’? 1979? 1969? 1959?

Nope the 1980s don’t get much love by the goatee-stroking movie buff, and music snobs sniff at that decade too. Who cares what they think, right?

Scanning the chart I’ve seen 68 of the 285 films on the chart, I think thats even worse than I managed last time!

Looking at my files I have 80 films from 1999 in my movie collection.

    Favorites include –

    American Beauty
Austin Powers -The Spy Who Shagged Me
    Bowfinger
    Corruptor ,The
    Deep Blue Sea
    End of Days
    eXistenZ
    Fantasia 2000
    Fight Club
    Galaxy Quest
    Haunting ,The
    House on Haunted Hill
    Iron Giant ,The
    Matrix ,The
    Mummy ,The (1999)
    Mystery Men
    Notting Hill
    Sixth Sense ,The
    Sleepy Hollow
Star Wars I -The Phantom Menace
    Tarzan (1999)
    Three Kings
    Toy Story 2
    Wild Wild West
    World is Not Enough ,The
    zz-Japan – Godzilla 2000

Good, bad or ugly, I don’t discriminate, I’ll watch anything… well, nearly anything. 🙂

Most watched from that year, probably – The Matrix, The Mummy, The Phantom Menace and The World is Not Enough.

Top rated films I haven’t seen include – The Straight Story, Election and Topsy-Turvy.

Good stuff Bruce, another epic movie year page, last of the 20th century? Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….thanks as always for checking out these massive yearly reviews. I am still shocked that your totals have been going down. I guess you are a lot more picky than I am when watching movies. My big question is ….”Does it have subtitles?”….lol. As for the greatness of this year…it is certainly a good year…..not as great as I originally was thinking. I am getting real curious about doing a research page once I knock off the finally 9 years. I was recently reading something by Peter Bogdanovich about how he thought 1928 is the greatest year in movies. I had not heard that before.

Funny comment about the 1980s…..the decade that brought us the Judd Nelson classics Blue City, Fandango and From The Hip. I have seen all of your favorites except for Godzilla 2000. I agree with you 100% on Galaxy Quest, Notting Hill, Bowfinger and The Iron Giant. I have not seen The Straight Story or Topsy-Turvey either. Election was a decent movie….just not one I have ever re-visited.

9 more years to go…..and then yearly reviews from 1928 to 2019….almost 100 years….never thought I would get so close to finishing this project. Great feedback as always.

      1. Hey Stefan Lenser…..[squints] always good to see new commenters….welcome to our humble little website.

  4. Again incomplete theatrical, all films seen in Queens theaters but only through the letter H for films seen in the Bronx and Manhattan. I listed boroughs as where I saw them but exact locations for theaters in Queens where I moved in 1998. Bronx and Manhattan theaters were added later but never completed. Anyway here’s 108 1999 films I saw in the cinemas.

    1. Hey Dan….here I am all proud of my 133 2019 movies seen…..and then I read your comment. Talk about keeping a guy down…lol. You saw almost as many movies in theater that I did in total. I am always amazed at the amount of movies you have seen. This year my movie watching is down…but I will still end up seeing over 400 movies in 2019. Not all made in 2019….but total movies watched. As always…..thanks for sharing your movie database with us. It has always been mind boggling with movies seen and movie record keeping. Good feedback as always.

  5. I have seen 14 movies from 1999. I have seen 4 of the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is American Beauty.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is The Sixth Sense.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is Grey Owl, a much better film than its 200th rank.

    Favourite 1999 Movies:

    The World is Not Enough
    The Thomas Crown Affair
The Talented Mr. Ripley (just saw the French version Purple Noon from 1960-great)
Topsy Turvey (about the making of the musical The Mikado)
    Notting Hill
    Grey Owl

Other 1999 Movie I Have Seen:

    American Beauty
    The Cider House Rules
    Being John Malcovich
    Magnolia
    Man in the Moon
    Girl, Interrupted
    Tea With Mussolini
Mickey Blues Eyes – saw this own a plane on my way to Greece in 2000)

This is likely my final yearly review comment.

    1. Hey Flora. First of all thanks for all the comments on the yearly review….but you can not give up this close to the finish line….only 9 more yearly reviews to go. You can do it…..keep the chin up…..taking deep breathes….small steps. Ok….just joking….if you do not comment on the 2000-2008 pages I understand.

14 is not too bad of a tally. I have seen 133 of these movies…close to Dan’s total….but in 2nd place again. Of the 14 you have seen…I have seen them all except for Topsy Turvey…..I have never been able to track that one down.

As for Gray Owl….I agree it is a very good movie…..it just got ignored at the box office…..so I agree…200th seems pretty low for such a good movie. I guess the biggest movie you have missed is The Sixth Sense….that has one of the best Bruce Willis roles ever. Just got Sam and Emily to watch that one a few days ago. WoC did not like Mickey Blue Eyes at all. Good feedback as always. Thanks for taking the time to share this information.
