  1. I watched Steve Carell in The Big Short recently, I didn’t like the film but he was the best actor in it, Christian Bale was overacting badly.

Bruce Almighty tops the UMR chart, good film a little overrated, Carell was funny in that but it was Jim Carrey’s film.

Not sure if his character in the Anchorman films is supposed to be mentally retarded, what do you think Bruce? He was very good in Foxcatcher, unrecognizable with that prosthetic nose, not a film I’d watch again though.

I’ve seen 13 of the live action 24 you’ve listed and 4 of the animated voice roles, Carell hit the jackpot playing Groo (or is it Gru?) in the Despicable Me series.

Good work Bruce. Voted Up. Seth Rogen on the list?

    1. Hey Steve.
      1. Thanks for the mini-review of The Big Short. Good to know he was the best actor in that one.
      2. Surprised that Bale was overacting…especially with him getting his 3rd Oscar nomination for that one. Might be going to see that this weekend.
      3. I agree…Bruce Almighty is a Jim Carrey movie versus a Carell movie…but I have never figured out how to separate supporting roles from the starring roles when it comes to the Movie Score.
      4. Without Bruce Almighty….he might not have gotten the role in the 40-year-old virgin…..and then his whole movie career would have been very very different.
      5. I am sure my older boys can explain his Anchorman character….that is actually my least favorite of the characters in those movies.
      6. I have seen 20 of the live action…and all 4 of the voice over roles.
      7. His name is Gru…not to be confused with Nicolas Cage’s Grug from The Croods.
Thanks for your Carell movie thoughts…they are greatly appreciated.

    1. Hey Tyler….it is possible…about to find out….as the nominations are only 18 minutes away. If not….he still has picked up back to back Golden Globe nominations…for Foxcatcher and The Big Short.

    2. Hey Tyler…looks like Christian Bale….took all the votes. But still Carell got lots of good press for his performance…..plus it got a Best Picture nomination…that looks good on a Hollywood resume.

  2. I used to watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart all the time. The last couple of seasons I stopped because all the news happening was terrifying or horrifying and I couldn’t handle watching him try to satirize it and just avoided all news programs at all, knowing I would find out things by people telling me.

But I did watch it for at least a decade and that is where I first saw Steve Carell. I watched The Office as well.

I would like to see Little Miss Sunshine.

    Cheers,

    Flora

    1. Hey Flora….glad Steve Carell’s television career got him to be noticed by you. My second oldest son is a huge The Office fan…..he still watches that show in re-runs….and still really enjoys it. Alan Arkin in very good (Oscar winning role for him) in Little Miss Sunshine…as for the movie…it is a very quirky interesting movie. Thanks for your comments…both are greatly appreciated.

  3. Bruce:
    May I make a suggestion?

I did not see Foxcatcher-don’t want to see it-but considering GG and Oscar noms and wins go into your formula perhaps it is better to put quotation marks around the term “pretentious movies” in your introductory comments or replace it with a phrase like “artsy movies” which has historically been code for movies that will please people behind awards shows but won’t make money at the box office? It is more what you mean and doesn’t sound condescending.

If I seem like I’m nitpicking I’m just trying to get you to be able to avoid any potential troll-like threads that you sometimes get when people talk about ranking. I didn’t comment on the page, but I read with interested the troll-like conversation you had on your John Wayne page. It is after all, what was behind me having trouble on that site you and Steve know me from first and how I ended up getting banned from the site.

Go ahead and delete this comment once you have read it. I will make a separate comment on Carell.

    1. Hey Flora….I appreciate the suggestion. I went ahead and replaced “pretentious movies” with critically acclaimed movies. My John Wayne page is one of my most popular pages….with it being viewed over 100,000 times it will occasional run into some people that do not like the rankings. It kind of reminds me of my grocery business days…99.9% of the customers were great….then you had the other .1% that seem determined to take make everybody’s life more difficult. Hey I like the comment….I appreciate your concerns.
