John Schlesinger (1926-2003) was an Oscar®-winning English director. 1. John Richard Schlesinger was born and raised at Hampstead, London.

2. John Schlesinger served in the British Army in the Far East during World War II.

3.  John Schlesinger was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1970 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to film.

4. John Schlesinger directed eight different actors in Oscar®-nominated performances: Julie Christie, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Sylvia Miles, Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Burgess Meredith and Laurence Olivier. Christie won an Oscar® for Darling (1965).

    I’ve seen 7 John Schlesinger films, favorites are – Marathon Man, Pacific Heights and The Believers.

    I’ve also seen Midnight Cowboy, The Day of the Locust, Darling and Billy Liar.

    “Hey! I’m walkin’ here, I’m walkin’ here.” The first X-rated movie to win the Best Picture Oscar was directed by a British director. So proud. [wipes tear]
