Best IMDb trivia on Jack Warden

  1. John Warden Lebzelter Jr., was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1920.

2. Young Jack Lebzelter was expelled from Louisville’s DuPont Manual High School for repeatedly fighting. Good with his fists, he turned professional, boxing as a welterweight under the name “Johnny Costello”, adopting his mother’s maiden name. Once fought on the same card as Charles Durning in Madison Square Garden. The purses were poor, so he soon left the ring and worked as a bouncer at a night club.

3.  Jack Warden served as a paratrooper in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, with the 101st Airborne Division in World War II. In 1944, on the eve of the D-Day invasion (in which many of his friends died), Warden, then a staff sergeant, shattered his leg when he landed in a tree during a night-time practice jump in England.  He spent almost eight months in the hospital recuperating, during which time he read a Clifford Odets play and decided to become an actor.

4. Jack Warden’s first film role, uncredited, was in the 1951 film You’re in the Navy Now, a film that also featured the screen debuts of Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson.

5.  Jack Warden appeared in five films that were nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Picture: From Here to Eternity (1953), 12 Angry Men (1957), All the President’s Men (1976), Heaven Can Wait (1978) and The Verdict (1982). Of those, From Here to Eternity (1953) was the only one to win the award.

I’ve seen 18 of the 57 films on the chart. Favorites are – All the Presidents Men, From Here to Eternity, Run Silent Run Deep, The White Buffalo and Donovan’s Reef.

A familiar character actor I must have seen more of his films, can’t remember for sure.

I haven’t seen Bulworth or Mighty Aphrodite. I’ve only watched Heaven Can Wait once a long time ago, maybe I should give it another spin.

    Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!

Hey Steve. Tally counts: Cogerson 30, bob cox 21, Steve 18 and Flora 12. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of missing The White Buffalo. All The President’s Men and Donovan’s Reef are movies I watch pretty regularly. Bulworth and Mighty Aphrodite are ok movies….not thinking you have missed too much. Heaven Can Wait is a fun movie to watch. Another spin might help it move up in your Jack Warden rankings. Good stuff as always.

HI BRUCE: Thanks for your thoughts – as you know I always welcome them. Guilty as Sin though entertaining for me, was a sort of poor man’s’ Jagged Edge, staring Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges, which your sources rightly give a splendid 74% rating. However temptress Rebecca turned on the sex appeal which for me made up for the rather routine nature of the script, though she probably would never have gotten 4 stars from The Master for her performance! Don Johnson was excellent in the the Jeff Bridges manipulative type role from Jagged Edge.

Everyone knows what happened to The Thin Woman: after years basking in the reflected glory of the debonair Bill Powell and The Great Asta she was promoted to The Cogerson Queen. [An axiom of the ‘Corporate Ladder’ is that you “rise to the level of your incompetence.”]

But whatever happened to the eye-catching Rebecca? After 3 hits in quick succession -Risky Business, Backdraft and Hand that Rocks the Cradle – she was in just two more movies that would have smashed the Cogerson magical 100 million barrier for her had she been lucky enough to get a Cogerson page: 1993’s Three Musketeers [in the 1948 Lana Turner role] and 15 years ago, 2005’s Wedding Crashers [in which she was in a supporting role well down the cast list].

Since then, slightly too late on the scene to make an impression that might have gotten her into The Great White Book of 1983; devoid of all Cogerson love whatsoever; and put on 3 years’ probation in 2008 for drunk driving, she joined a whole bunch of attractive actresses who at one stage were the toast of Hollywood and seemed booked for very big things but in the end went nowhere or at least very little further – Sharon Stone, the Brando-loving Wynnona Rider, Theresa Russell and Debra Winger come immediately to mind.

Sadly at the age of 61 Beccy seems long past the stage where she might at least for a brief while be rescued from The Curse of 39, whose Happy Hunting Ground W o C discovered was Hollywood and its female stars. However at least one Canuck has kinder words to say about Beccy than another part-Canuck that we know has done so far-
“When I met Rebecca [De Mornay],” legendary one-time lover Leonard Cohen told Pico Mayer in 1998, “all kinds of thoughts came into my mind, as how could they not when faced with a woman of such beauty?”

In my last post I spelt Wynona, Wynnona – apologies.

But hey! – when I make mistakes I try to correct them quickly; whereas I told that lazy ole Work Horse [rather a contradiction in terms I admit] several years ago that Bogie was in Chain and not Chained Lightning, but W o C’s rascal has never done anything about it as this extract from WH’s Humph page illustrates.

The first film in which I saw Jack Warden was 12 Angry Men. The last two movies in which I watched him were also legal dramas, 1982’s The Verdict and 1993’s Guilty as Sin and in each of those he played the sidekick of a lawyer: Paul Newman and Rebecca De Mornay respectively. I enjoyed Jack’s performance in all 3 movies. Whilst Guilty as Sin is not a ‘great’ movie, I think it was routinely entertaining and the 48% rating above sells it well short.

On top of his prolific big screen career Jack had a massive television career as well: he was in 57 productions between 1952 and 1999. His net worth at the time of his death in 2006 has been assessed as $7 million in 2018 dollars.

A stalwart character actor from the Classic Era and beyond, Jack was in my opinion a highly entertaining performer who well deserves his Cogerson page. I never knew about his boxing credentials; but he did always look to me as someone like Russell Crowe whom I wouldn’t want to annoy in a bad mood on a dark night in an alleyway somewhere. Costello is actually W o Bob’s maiden name.

Hey Bob. Good thoughts on Jack Warden. I really enjoyed 12 Angry Men and The Verdict. I have not seen Guilty as Sin….but I will go with your thoughts that it is better than the 48% it earned in our critic and audience rating. 7 million is pretty good. Good to know that Costello is WoB’s maiden name. Good stuff as always.

Hey Flora….thanks for the feedback and tally count on Jack Warden. I have seen 27 of his movies…compared to your 12. Growing up, I really enjoyed when he popped up in movies. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of Darby’s Rangers….which I want to see. I really like 12 Angry Men, Heaven Can Wait, Being There and The Verdict…but my all-time favorite Jack Warden movie is All the President’s Men. I also really liked him in the Sandra Bulllock comedy While You Were Sleeping and in a dual role in Used Cars. I am not surprised Billy Two Hats made the “other list”. I remember that was not one of your favorite Peck movies. Good stuff.

Hey Dan. Massive lists for Jack Warden…surprised he is sitting in the Top 100…not surprised he is in the Top 1000. First list is pretty darn big. Lots of legends on that list. Looks like Stuart Whitman is his most frequent Oracle co-star. His career spanned so long….he has some current stars and some all-time classic stars on his lists. Second list shows an amazing 56 Oscar winning co-stars….one of the best totals ever. He and Warren Beatty were friends…that fact always surprised me when Warden did not show up in Beatty’s Reds. Good feedback as always.
