Jeff Goldblum Movies

Jeff Goldblum (1952-) is an Oscar®-nominated American actor.  He has starred in some of the highest-grossing films of his era, Jurassic Park (1993) and Independence Day (1996), as well as their sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018). His IMDb page shows 123 acting credits since 1974.  In the table below, Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks 50 of his movies in 6 different sortable columns.  Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings on the table, but have a spot near the bottom of the page.

Jeff Goldblum Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies by movie title and movie trailers.
  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies by co-stars of his movies.
  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost  (in millions)
  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies by yearly domestic box office rank
  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies how they were received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each Jeff Goldblum movie received and how many Oscar® wins each Jeff Goldblum movie won.
  • Sort Jeff Goldblum movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

  1. HI STEVE Jeff has been in 13 movies that crashed Bruce’s magical 100 million dollar barrier in adjusted domestic grosses and a good few of them are commercial blockbusters, 6 of them in fact hitting over the adjusted $300 million mark in the US. However in most of them he was a supporting actor and in only two of them could he be called the out and out star. Outside the Cogerson Big 13 his movies have not overall set the box office alight and in the table above his other 38 movies collectively grossed just slightly over $1 billion in adjusted domestic earnings or a paltry average of only $27 million per movie.

Best POSTERS for me in your Goldblum video are Trans 6-5000, the entire set for Independence Day Resurrection, the 1st one for Hideaway, foreign language one for Earth Girls are Easy [we haven’t had to many FL ones of late if my short-term memory is accurate] Mr Frost, Jurassic World 2018, Into the Night, Powder, the 1974 “original vigilante” [ie the man Jason would probably LIKE to be!] Invasion of the Body Snatchers**Silverado and the 2 for Thor.

STILLS that particularly interest me are (1) Into the Night (2) the dinosaur scene from Jurassic Lost |World (3) and (4) with two excellent black actors, Smith and Fishburne (5) ensemble from The Big Chill (6) with “Spock” and The Donald of the movies (7) both stills from The Fly (8) Grand Budapest Hotel and (9) Jurassic Park 1993.

To be honest I have always been indifferent to Jeff as an actor but as I say “one man’s meat is another’s poison” because his opening quote about sci-fi and horror films and Vincent price [who of course was a star of the original [1958] The Fly, though not the lead suggests that YOU and Jeff are kindred spirits.

Also there are some stunning pictorials in your Goldblum profile and overall my notes record an average 98% rating. I don’t go in for spelling out my individual ratings as I feel that it would make a post too convoluted but I can reveal that I gave Invasion of the Body Snatchers 99%, so I’ll leave you to work out which was my fave poster!

You and a guy whose scores we will probably NEVER fathom ! agree on 5 of Jeff’s Top 6 best reviewed flicks with your only serious disagreement at the top being your making Jurassic Park 1993 your No 1 and Bruce ranking it 7th He includes in his 6 instead Invasion of The Body Snatchers whereas you exclude it from the top half dozen. Good incisive stuff overall from you both though. Vote up plus, plus!

    1. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, trivia, box office info and comparison, much appreciated. Glad you liked the posters and stills.

You may not be a big fan of modern cinema but you do seem to enjoy the modern poster artwork in my videos. I have to give you credit for that. You might easily have said ‘they’re ghastly Steve, let’s get back to the classics, please!’. 🙂

Jeff might not be a top billed star but, like Malkovich and Dafoe, he makes a film even better by being in it. His supporting role in Thor Ragnarok as the eccentric ruler of ‘a garbage planet surrounded by wormholes’ was hilarious and one of the highlights of the film.

Two Goldblum films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Jurassic Park and The Grand Budapest Hotel. There are no 9s, but there are eight scoring 8 out of 10 including The Right Stuff, Silverado and The Fly.

Just to clarify when I say ‘there are no 9s’ I meant there are no films on this chart that topped out at 9. Otherwise yes there are 9s – Jurassic Park and Grand Budapest Hotel both scored 9 from other sources, but their top score was 10. Did that make any sense? 😉

Jurassic Park and Budapest Hotel were tied for the top spot at IMDB, and The Right Stuff was no.1 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Jurassic Park didn’t do as well on Bruce’s critics chart, Budapest is no.1 and Isle of Dogs at no.2. Jurassic Park tops the UMR and box office chart.

“I’m just flattered playing smart guys who get to figure out before anybody else what’s going on. So that’s awfully fun.”

“I mean, forget about Jurassic Park, I remember the real-event movie when I was a kid was King Kong Vs. Godzilla. There was a theatre outside of Pittsburgh where I grew up, a real jewel box inside, three balconies.”

“At its best, life is surprising. Maybe, because that’s my appetite, the frontier is uncharted. But it suits me fine. I’ve gotten used to that. Some people couldn’t bear it, but I like that life.”

      1. HI STEVE Excellent comprehensive and informative reply from you with your usual offering of quotes that I haven’ seen before. I like Jeff’s one about being the smart guy who figures out things before everyone else does. Does that mean that if Bruce ever persuades the movie moguls to make a film of Joel’s life Jeff will get to play him?

I’m not arguing that Jeff shouldn’t get some credit for the blockbusters that I’ve mentioned in which he had supporting roles/cameos or that you and Bruce shouldn’t be including them. All I’m advising is that we keep a sense of proportion about the full significance of those movies to Jeff’s box office status.

To me a true “star” is one who can open a string of successful movie [like Cruise, Hanks, Willis, Gable and Wayne in their heyday] as distinct from performers who happen to be in a number of blockbusters in which they are not the main star and which can often be largely self-selling franchises with dinosaurs or the Meg thrown in for good measure.

If we attach the label “star” to the latter category of artist most of Hollywood could almost be regarded as stars and the term would become meaningless. In my opinion Jeff’s true box office potential is largely in the 38 movies that averaged some $27 million each outside his Top 13.

Bette and my Joan disagreed about virtually everything but they were in accord about being “sick of performers of modest achievement or who were even nonentities being hailed as ‘superstars’.”

I’ve now finished Liam Neeson’s Non Stop and thoroughly enjoyed it. That got me wondering why it is that I can watch Liam as an action hero and yet cannot stand The Rock or Jason. One of the reasons could be that Neeson doesn’t feel, as Statham apparently does, that he has to take off his shirt in every movie to let gasping female co-stars se that he has muscles. I guess I just like my action heroes to be not too much in my face

VICTOR AMATO [gangleader – Edward G Robinson] I suppose you feel that I’m the one who informed on you to get you sent up the river for a spell.

STEVE ROLLINS [con just released from prison- Alan Ladd] If I find out it was you I’ll be back.

[Rollins then saunters quietly out of the room]

BURLY GIGANTIC HENCHMAN Shall I go after him and put his lights out, boss?

AMATO If you decide to try it name me in your will before you do!

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Wow…..another mother gold lode …massive amounts of information….as always thanks for sharing.
      2. So he was 64th and now he is up to 59th….in the next week he will already have 3 2018 movies that have done well in theaters.
      3. The Player is always a “helper”….in this case it really helped his Oscar winning co-star tally…..too bad Sir Michael Caine was not in that movie. The 38 winners for Goldblum is the highest in awhile.
      4. That high in the rankings…and yet has not starred with anybody in the Top 13….pretty amazing
      5. And the winner of the Bess Flower award goes to Anjelica Huston….I think….the list is so long…lol.
      6. Names off the list that make me sad….Bronson and Pryor…though I was surprised Pryor was on the list….not many movies…and certainly not many movies since 1990.
      Awesome information as always.

      1. It’s actually 39 winners. I had Robert Duvall down for Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I thought that was ridiculous so I dropped it. Then I remembered Duvall was one of the eary entries in my data and because it was in both Upper and low case titles it had been copied directly from the IMDB when you were able to do that. If you look up Mr. Duvall on IMDB he has an uncredited part as priest on a swing.

Since the Oracle of Bacon did their first list in 2000 based on whatever info was in the IMDB at the time I think there were a lot less of uncredited parts reported and that most people on the list actually had screen credits in their pics. More viewers and contributers to the site built up all the extras and uncredited roles for people. Bess Flowers is what 266 in 2000 and she moved up to 111 in 2005. Now she’s gone but for her or anyone that hasn’t worked in years they are credited with more actors(not really helping any of the olders stars in the long run).

    2. dan, I was wondering is there any way to sort out cameos like the player from your fabulous lists? it might focus me more on stong connectedness on these valuable lists.

  3. I was watching Jeff Goldblum at the cinema last night, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. He only appeared at the beginning and end of the film though, not a big role. The film? I enjoyed it, different from the previous 4 in the series. Jurassic Mansion might be a more apt title.

I’ve seen 24 of the 50 films on the chart, 25 if you add Jurassic World in the near future.

Favorites include – Death Wish, The Right Stuff, The Fly , Independence Day, Thor Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (was he in this? I think for a few seconds during the end credits?). Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Prince of Egypt, Grand Budapest Hotel, Silverado and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

For a while in the 90s he was in two of the biggest movies of the decade – ID4 and Jurassic Park. And he hasn’t done too badly recently either.

Another expert movie page Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve…..glad you enjoyed Jurassic Mansion. That movie is already a huge hit overseas…we are still a week away from it playing here….not sure if we are going to see it. We are seeing The Incredibles 2 (100% sure) and Tag (fingers crossed the schedule will work out) in the next few days. Even with including the new Jurassic movie….I have your tally beat….as I have seen 35.

Seen all of your favorites with the exception of Prince of Egypt……which sits on my DVD shelf just waiting to be watched. I agree he had a great 1990s…..”Must go faster”…..in not one….but two massive hits.

As for Guardians of the Galaxy 2…..yep he is barely in the movie…I plan on removing it……when I add Jurassic World to the page. WoC is running some behind the scenes programs….and they are automatically adding movies to the database/website….sometimes it is a good thing…other times….like in this case it is a bad thing. I have corrected some of the errors (most noticeable in the director pages)….but on the next update…the WoC program adds the duplicate movies right back on the table……hopefully WoC will be able to fix that this weekend.

      Good feedback as always.

  4. I saw 23. 17 of top 20, surprise I missed the 3 cartoons , oops I mean anime. no prince of Egypt or isle of dogs , or cats and dogs for me yet. this is the quirkiest actor he must have loved weird roles. the fly, invasion of the body snatchers, adventures of buckaroo banzai, silverado, independence day, big chill, man of the year , earth girls are easy, death wish, Nashville, grand Budapest hotel, life aquatic, on and on quirky. 3 0f my now 250 favorites( I recounted) are the only 3 10s(top 600/greats) ID4 ( a funny apocalyptic movie), Silverado(cleese is perfect, cast is beyond belief, 6 of the funniest western scenes ever), big chill , apparently all 3 hidden gems. I wonder if ID4 is close to 1 billion world wide box office yet. deeply hidden gem is the adventures of buckaroo banzai, as one female letterboxd reviewer put it ” I am not sure if I am the right gender to appreciate this, h___ , I am not sure I am the right species”. LOL, I love to laugh.

    1. Hey bob cox….I have seen 35 or 70% of this movies. I have Prince of Egypt sitting on my DVD shelf….just never got around to watching it…..it’s voice cast is pretty impressive. He is indeed a quirky actor. Loved Silverado, The Big Chill (though on my last viewing…I got bored with the movie). Buckaroo is a cult classic….it was a HBO staple when I was growing up….watched that one many many times….and never understood it a single time…lol. He is having a good 2018….and he has a new Jurassic Park movie next weekend. Thanks for sharing your tally, thoughts and Goldblum thoughts. Good stuff.

  5. Love Goldblum. One of the better supporting characters working. Did not realize he was in Death Wish, but there he is in the trailer. What did he play in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Glad to see him get a umr page.

    1. Hey SteinHoF16….I agree he is one of the better supporting actors working today. Yep…he and Denzel Washington appeared in a Death Wish movie early in their careers. As for Guardians of the Galaxy 2….he has an uncredited appearance in that one. WoC has been “scraping” information off the internet…..and it is automatically adding movies into the tables. Debating….if I should delete these additions….it is really causing issues with director pages. Thanks for stopping by.
