Thoughts On All The Mel Gibson Movies

Agent Game (2022) My thoughts:  This is not very good.  Nowhere near the highlight of Mr. Gibson’s career.

Air America (2006) My thoughts:  Remember when Mel was the superstar and Robert Downey, Jr was the one struggling in his personal life?  As for the movie, not the best from either actor.

Apocalypto (2006) My thoughts: The fourth movie Mel directed.  I had high expectations for this movie but the movie did not meet those expectations.  And looking at the massive 2nd-weekend dropoff, I was not the only one thinking that way.

Attack Force Z (1982) My thoughts: I watched this movie many times in the mid-1980s, as it was in heavy rotation on HBO.  As a teenager I thought it was pretty good….have yet to see it as a smarter wiser adult so I am not sure it is still a “pretty good” movie.

Bandit (2022) My thoughts:  Awesome movie.  Bandit made my Top 10 list of favorite movies seen in 2022.  Mel has a supporting role.  Worth checking out.

The Beaver (2011)  My thoughts: This is one strange movie that starts dark and ends up evener darker…not a movie that I will ever watch again.  Jodie Foster was the director and to date the last lead role for Gibson.

Bird on a Wire (1990) My thoughts: Despite being his 11th biggest box office hit this movie is pretty bad.

Blood Father (2016) My thoughts: Mel’s newest starring role movie is getting some solid reviews and the trailer looks promising.  Looking forward to this one.

Boss Level (2020) My thoughts:  Trailer for this one looked promising.  Movie was not nearly as good as the trailer.  In the end, I thought it was ok….just not enough Mel in the movie.

The Bounty (1984)  My thoughts: The fourth film version about the mutiny of the Bounty.  Gibson follows in the footsteps of Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, and Marlon Brando as he plays Fletcher Christian.  A good movie with Anthony Hopkins stealing the movie and keep an eye out for a very young Liam Neeson.

Braveheart (1995)  My thoughts:  Let’s see how did Braveheart get this top-ranking?  First of all, it is one of his biggest hits.  Secondly, it is one of his best-received movies according to critics and audiences.  Thirdly it got some serious Oscar® love….10 Oscar® nominations and 5 wins.  And finally, Mel Gibson got not one but two Oscar® wins for the movie.  One was for Best Director and the second was for Best Producer…which he won when Braveheart won the Best Picture Oscar®.  Kind of hard to top those accomplishments.

Chicken Run (2000)  My thoughts: Granted Mel Gibson only provides his voice in this computer-animated stop motion movie, but it is a very entertaining movie that both parents and kids can enjoy.

Conspiracy Theory (1997) My thoughts:  Mel and Julia Roberts team up for one of his biggest box office hits.  Patrick Stewart as the villain actually outshines both Mel and Julia.

Daddy Home 2 (2018) My thoughts: Movie has some funny moments, but overall, this is a pretty

Dangerous (2021) My thoughts:  Mel literally phones in this performance.  He plays Scott Eastwood’s shrink.  Mel’s entire role takes place on a phone.  Pretty forgettable.

Dragged Across Concrete (2019) My thoughts: Looking forward to seeing this movie. The director was the man behind Kurt Russell’s Bone Tomahawk and Vince Vaughn’s Brawl In Cell Block 99….both have a nice following.

Edge of Darkness (2010) My thoughts: This was Mel’s return to acting in front of the camera after 7 years away.  A pretty standard action piece that did not bring Gibson back to his glory days.

The Expendables 3  (2014) My thoughts:  It could have been a great movie with all the in front of camera talent….instead this turned out to be a pretty bad movie.

Father Stu (2022) My thoughts:  Mel and Mark Wahlberg play father and son again. This based on a true story movie, is ok….it just never gets going.  Mel is probably the best part of the movie.

Fatman (2020) My thoughts:  Loved this movie.  I loved it so much, that I went out and bought it for my collection.  Mel as Santa is AWESOME!

Force of Nature  (2020) My thoughts:  Ok…Mel is the best part of the movie.  Sadly, he is only in a supporting role, and even more sad, the rest of the movie is horrible.

Forever Young (1992) My thoughts:  It has probably been 20 years since I saw this romantic time travel movie.  Forever Young was a box office hit and made during the career peak of Mel.

Gallipoli (1981) My thoughts: I recently re-watched Gallipoli…it was much better the second time around.  I can see why it got a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Foreign Film.

Get The Gringo (2012) My thoughts:  One of Mel’s better movies of the 2000s.  This Video on Demand movie is fun and entertaining. It is a very gritty movie.  Mel is a blast to watch as we watch him maneuver through one bad spot after another.    Sadly this movie is rarely talked about. Worth checking out.

Hamlet (1990) My thoughts:  This is actually one of the few versions of Hamlet that I have ever seen.  If you like Shakespeare then you will probably like Mel’s Hamlet.  As for me, I have always found it very hard to get into the language of the great William Shakespeare….so it was not a fun movie-going experience for me.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) My thoughts:  The return of Mel Gibson is complete. This is one of his best movies period.  Great action, great drama…great movie period.

Hot Seat (2022) My thoughts:  Dumb action movie. Mel plays second fiddle to Kevin Dillon.  How is that possible?

Last Looks (2021) My thoughts:  Mel gets caught up in a murder.  Is he an innocent viction or the villain?  Really enjoyed this one, and would watch it again.  A nice surprise.

Lethal Weapon (1987) My thoughts: I find it shocking that this movie is almost 30 years old.  We got this classic in 1987 and Die Hard in 1988…those were the days.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) My thoughts: Not as good as Lethal Weapon, but a very good sequel.  Joe Pesci made a very nice addition to the series which is Mel’s 2nd biggest box office hit.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) My thoughts: After hitting two home runs with Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 part 3 was a double at best.  That being said it is his 4th biggest box office hit.

Lethal Weapon 4 (2000) My thoughts: The fourth and final movie in the Lethal Weapon series.  Made a ton of money but they probably should have stopped as a trilogy.

Machete Kills  (2013) My thoughts: I will not be going to the theaters to see this movie, but it does seem to be the start of the return of Mel Gibson.   After his turn as the villain in Machete Kills he will be the villain in Expendables 3.

Mad Max (1979) My thoughts:  The first of the Mad Max movies is my least favorite of the trilogy…but it is worth viewing to see the beginning of Max’s story.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) My thoughts: The biggest box office hit of the Mad Max trilogy.  The first half is awesome but falls apart when he leaves Bordertown.  The final chase is weak compared to the chase in The Road Warrior.

The Man Without A Face (1993) My thoughts:  Mel Gibson’s directorial debut is an entertaining movie and one of my favorite Gibson movies.

Maverick (1994) My thoughts:  Mel takes over the Maverick role in this western box office hit.  Added bonus we get James Garner and James Coburn in supporting roles.  A movie I can watch repeatedly.

Million Dollar Hotel (2001)  My thoughts: Mel has the best part in the movie,  but that is not saying much as this movie is pretty bad.  Rockstar, Bono, provided the story and was one of the producers.

Mrs. Soffel (1984)  My thoughts: One of Mel Gibson’s first American produced films.  Mel plays a prisoner and Diane Keaton plays the warden’s wife that falls in love with Mel….not a very believable story…but Keaton did earn a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Actress for her role in the movie.

Panama (2021) My thoughts:  Weak action movie.  Mel only has a handful of scenes.  He is fine is his role, but this one is very forgettable.

The Passion of the Christ (2004) My thoughts:  Not only is it Mel Gibson’s biggest box office hit, it is one the biggest box office hits of all-time.  I just recently watched this movie for the first time and I’m still trying to figure out if I liked the movie or not.

The Patriot (2000) My thoughts: I actually did not like this movie on my first viewing but it has gotten better on repeat viewings.  Gibson’s 10th biggest box office hit of his career.

Payback (1999) My thoughts:  Another one of my favorite Gibson movies.  I love the very small part of James Coburn.  But caution to all..it is a pretty violent movie.

Pocahontas (1995) My thoughts:  Another voice-only role…this time it is for Disney Animation.  Pocahontas was one of his biggest hits and won two Oscars

The Professor and the Madman (2019) My thoughts: I liked the movie, but it was a lot more violent and gory than I was expecting. Mel is good in the movie….but Sean Penn is better.

Ransom (1996) My thoughts: A pretty intense movie from director Ron Howard.  Mel is excellent as the dad fighting to get his son back.

The River (1984)  My thoughts:  Mel does a good job playing a farmer dealing with floods, greedy banks and the evil rich neighbor, Scott Glenn.  Sissy Spacek plays Mel’s wife at the height of her career.

The Road Warrior (1982) My thoughts: The second part of the Mad Max trilogy is my favorite of the three movies. The final action scene is one of the best-filmed action scenes ever….and done without computer help.

Signs (2002) My thoughts:  M. Night’s last good movie, Mel’s 2nd biggest hit, and one of his better-reviewed movies puts Signs into Mel’s Top 5.  This movie seriously freaked my now 19-year-old daughter out….she made it to the scene where Mel is looking under the door with the knife…11 years later and she still will not watch the end of the movie.

The Singing Detective (2003)  My thoughts:  While it is nice to see Robert Downey, Jr. and Mel in another movie together, this pretty depressing story about a writer with a skin disease is not a fun movie to watch.

Tequila Sunrise (1988) My thoughts:  I love this movie, the three leads (Mel, Kurt Russell, and Michelle Pfeiffer) are outstanding.  No idea why critics and audiences only gave it a 54% rating.  Repeat viewings only add to the depth of the story with lots of subtle hints about the character’s actions and decisions.

Tim (1979) My thoughts: Only his 3rd movie.  I saw this movie many years ago.  Mel plays a role unlike any other in his career as he plays a young man with below-average intelligence.  Piper Laurie gets top billing but it was Mel that stands out in this movie.

We Were Soldiers (2002) My thoughts: Tells the story of the first major battle in Vietnam.  The first half of the movie is a family drama while the second half is a war movie…that combination might not suit many viewers…but I liked the movie.

What Women Want (2000)  My thoughts:  I like this movie, but my wife loves this movie.  It is the 5th biggest box office hit of his career.

The Year of Living Dangerously (1983)  My thoughts: I have seen this movie but it has been almost 30 years since my last viewing.  The only thing that really sticks out in my memory is Linda Hunt playing a man in her Oscar® winning performance.

  1. if you sort by your dumb rankings this is a horrible way to rank mel ‘s movies they make no sense at all

    1. Hey Jackson. Thanks for the feedback. I actually agree that in this case my UMR score does not work very well on Gibson movies. That is one of the reasons that the deflaut setting is on reviews versus the UMR score. But……I think in most cases our UMR score does an outstanding job of ranking a person’s movies.

  2. 1.THE DUKE Good point about his western B movies and strangely profiles of the Duke rarely dwell much on them

    2. MEL Braveheart’s Oscar success gave it a 2nd box office wind though if my memory is correct they pulled it from the cinemas well in advance of the Oscar ceremonies opining that the scarcity factor and the publicity of a 2nd release would maximise potential Oscars impact.

3 DENZEL/WILL SMITH Another good point about Will aiming to do a Denzel. Washington rarely produces massive hits but he usually trickles along with respectable overall grosses and as the budgets for his movies are normally sensible a few years ago producers labelled him the “best value for money” star in the world. For example Flight which was a goodly hit cost just $31 million to make and his latest Fences which has grossed just some $40 million in the US cost only $24 million to produce so that it’s overseas gross will probably ensure a small profit or at least no serious loss of money.

4 INFLATION Box Office Mojo is now predicting that the fears you voiced to me before Xmas are about to come true and that in 2017 ticket prices will fall from the present average of $8.61 to $8.51. However I do not think you need to be all that concerned because you have not adjusted for inflation for a few years and the drop will actually bring the adjusted figures more into line with your current ones as is demonstrated in the following table which for Denzel’s top 3 movies shows Mojo’s new figures adjusted to an $8.51 ticket price. Your own current figures are in square brackets. Accordingly your policy of letting the hare sit for a few years instead of regularly chopping and changing your massive volume of figures for relatively petty amounts may prove sensible in the end.
    PELICAN BRIEF $206.0 [205.2]
    REMEMBER THE TITANS $182.4 [180.9]
    CRIMSON TIDE $178.8 [177.1]

    1. BRUCE

Excuse the sloppy wording in my previous post as of course you adjust for inflation all the time when you produce new pages and what I was trying to say was that you once told me that you do an OVERALL READJUSTMENT just every few years as annual movements in price are generally relatively small.

      1. True…with all the updates in 2016….they were almost all updated last year….but normally …..I tend to adjust all the ticket prices every two or so years…..so hopefully it will go back down…and then take a couple of years to work it’s way to the 2015 page….and that way my numbers won’t need adjusting until 2019 or 2020… this will of course never happen…..lol.

    2. Hey Bob
      1. I imagine those B Wayne Westerns probably have decent box office total when combined…15 million times 80 movies is 1.2 billion…..even 10 million would put $800 million in the Wayne column
      2. My theory depends on Hacksaw getting lots of Oscar nominations….like 6 or 7 …and in major categories like Picture, Director and Actor….2 or 3 minor nominations will not get it back in theaters
      3. Will Smith’s Oscar bait movies have been bombs….seems he should worry about what the public likes versus trying to win awards
      4. Well the ticket information sounds good to me….hopefully the site will be dynamic when we change the ticket price.
      🙂

      1. HI BRUCE

1 It would be good for YOU if your site went dynamic though I would hope that you would not kept chopping and changing the figures because I like a settled period of at least two years and would probably feel the urge to duplicate any changes you made.

2 But who am I to tell a guy who has just chalked up 9 million views how to run his site? Congratulations and richly deserved.

        1. Hey Bob…..even when it goes dynamic…which WoC has one more semester before her Master degree is done…..and on her mental list is getting UMR.com dynamic is high on her list….I do not plan on constantly changing the numbers….only when errors are discovered or a better source is uncovered. Our neighbor has told us getting it dynamic is actually not too difficult….but then again…he does that for a living….versus the side gig WoC has….lol. Thanks for the congrats on 9 million. Hopefully the next million will come in less than 90 days…..that is our new goal.

FYI AW Stats….which is what my BlueHost website provider uses….says we are actually averaging almost a MILLION views a month….and not every three months….I keep playing around with page counters…but none of them seem to work very well. So I stick with the Google Analytics I have used for years for my “official” view counter…..but even that one does not include my time on the site…..my time on the website does not go into their count…..it makes sense in some ways….but I do use my website on a regular basis…especially when I watch a classic movie. I figure I have to be the number one user of the website….yet my views do not count.

  3. 1 We’ve been keeping our eye on Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge and the latest is that whilst it seems to be stuck domestically around the $65 million mark it has continued to power ahead overseas and has now grossed $85 million abroad so that its total current worldwide gross of around $150 million should give it a nice profit and there could be more cinematic earnings to come and there will definitely be additional income from DVD/Blue Ray sales. Could be that overseas audiences are more forgiving of Mel’s perceived lapses of taste than are domestic moviegoers.

2 However Will Smith seems to be in trouble again. I had thought that he too was on the comeback trail after the massive success of Suicide Squad but Collateral Beauty has grossed just 30 million domestically after 3 weeks of release and it has earned a similar amount abroad.
Apparently its first weekend in the US brought in the lowest opening gross for any Will Smith EVER. It doesn’t look if it will go too far in the States and we can only hope that the overseas markets might rescue it as they have done Mel’s Hacksaw Ridge. Collateral Beauty’s budget was reportedly $36 million so that if the old 2.5 break even point still hold true CB will need to gross $90 million to avoid financial loss.

    1. Hey Bob….I still think…Hacksaw Ridge will get repackaged when the Oscar nominations come out…..but I could be wrong……but looking at the grosses….it does not appear it ever reached the second run theaters….around my area we call them Cinema Cafes….either way Hacksaw Ridge is going to go on the plus side on Gibson’s column….maybe the comeback is here.

I agree with you about Will Smith….he is no longer the hip young star….but I think he has some juice left…he needs to follow Denzel’s blueprint. Pretty sure Collateral Beauty is going to lose lots of money.

      Thanks for the movie thoughts.

  4. 1 Some good Christmas cheer for Mel! If the old Variety yardstick that a movie goes into profit once it grosses 2.5 times its budget still holds good then Hacksaw Ridge is now $20 million in profit without even relying on DVD/Video sales The film seems to have almost stalled at the domestic box office generating just $1.5 million there in the past week but has powered ahead overseas now grossing $40 million abroad within the past fortnight so that its worldwide gross now stands at over $120 million against a $40 million budget Clearly it will not be a commercial blockbuster of the kind that Mel churned out in his heyday but its eventual take along with critical success should make it commercially viable for Mel to produce more movies if he chooses.

2 I regret that Myrna has resurfaced as an issue but if you’ve been following recent exchanges you will see that STEVE poked his stick through the bars of my cage taunting me to break out and enter that fray once more [“We can get him to draw anytime.”]

    1. Looks like ‘Myrna, Queen of Hollywood’ did not need all that billing malarkey to draw the crowds she [Stop it Steve!]

I’m messing with you Bob. If Bruce says’s Myrna should be listed in the Guinness Book of Records, there’s not much we can do about it, he’s the boss, the Grand Poobah!

Good to know Mad Mel is getting back in Hollywood’s ‘good books’ and the public might be starting to forgive that drunken tirade too. I’ll catch his new war movie on disc some time next year. Let’s see how well it does at Oscar time.

      1. Hey Steve….you are 100% correct…Myrna did not need top billing to bring home the bacon. All those women of the 1930 and early 1940s did not care where she was billed as long as she was in the movie. Many of those women actually had surgery to look more like her.

Currently Scarlett Johansson is getting all the press for being the most successful actress of all-time. She and Samuel L. Jackson are called the King and Queen of the Box Office. I think Loy has her easily beat when looking at adjusted box office. $8.30 Billion to $3.67 Billion….but Scarlett is only 32.

Yes Mel is having a comeback year….a Best Director Oscar nomination….could be the sign of the full comeback.

    2. Hey Bob….I still think there is some life left in Hacksaw Ridge….especially if it picks up 5 or 6 Oscar nominations….including a Best Picture. They would be smart to pull the movie now and re-release when it gets that Oscar love. As Myrna “Greatest Box Office Actress Of All-Time” Loy she is always just a sentence or two away from being brought up….lol. Actually HubPages “RobWrite” was the huge Myrna Loy fan….too bad he is not here to join in this debate. As always…thanks for the visit and the comment.

  5. 1 When Hacksaw Ridge came out I had high hopes that it might provide a comeback for Mel Gibson albeit as just a director. However as illustrated above after 5 weeks at US box offices it has grossed only $58 million and seems to be fading fast in American theatres.

2 It has done even more poorly abroad raking in just $16 million to date giving it a grand total of around $74 million. Unless its situation improves dramatically it certainly will not be a smash cinematic hit and might even depend on DVD/Video sales to turn a profit or even recoup its cost. The trade papers used to quote a rule of thumb that required a movie to gross two and a half times its budget just to break even as prints, promotional costs and the theatres’ share of the gross had to be allowed for. Hacksaw Ridge’s budget was $40 million

3 In 2006 Mel’s Acopalypto grossed only an adjusted $66 million in the States but it pulled in a healthy 155 million overall worldwide in adjusted dollars and generated global DVD/video sales in the US alone of $115 million in today’s money Its budget was about 46 million in adjusted dollars. So fingers crossed that there might still be some joy for Hacksaw Ridge in at least foreign and DVD markets. And is Oscar success too much to hope for? Mel’s gone down the latter route before to greater box office success as Braveheart was given a second release following Oscar glory. The film won 5 Academy Awards including best director for Mel and best picture for him and Laddie Jr. I bet that after all that Mel regretted poking fun at his fellow producer’s old man !
