New Top 100 UMR Movies

Recently we here at UMR decided to change the formula for our movie ranking calculation.  The old formula used box office results (30%), reviews (45%) Oscar wins and nominations (18%) and Golden Globe wins and nominations (5%).  The new formula uses box office results (30%), reviews (52%) Oscar wins and nominations (18%).  So basically, the Golden Globes got the boot and reviews became even more important.

Some movies really benefitted from this change.  Citizen Kane moved up the most as it went from 898th place to 296th place.  Movies in the Top 100 that saw big moves include Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger and Gravity.  Movies that went the other way include Rain Man, American Beauty, Kramer vs Kramer and Going My Way.  Each of these movies tumbled out of the Top 100.

Is this list better than our old list?….who knows…..but with streaming getting bigger and bigger…. reviews from audiences and critics seem to be the most important factor when thinking if a movie was successful or not.  Kudos to Marlon Brando (actor – 5 movies) and Steven Spielberg (director – 9 movies) for having the most movies in the Top 100.

New UMR Top 100 Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

  1. I guess this means I should hurry up and complete my Oscar audit. 🙂 That is if you haven’t vetted everything already.

  2. A nice new chart, problem is I can’t remember the previous charts rankings or scores! What you could have done is add the old chart score in brackets? [Bruce snarls] No worries they all have similar high scores anyway, looking at the UMR chart the lowest score is 99.6, whoa!

Good to see Ben-Hur rated so high, it nearly fell off the AFI’s updated Top 100, tsk tsk.

There are three films I haven’t seen from the 100 on this chart – The Bells of St. Mary’s, The Lost Weekend and Pride of the Yankees. A couple of years ago I saw – How Green Was My Valley, Mrs. Miniver and The Best Years of Our Lives for the first time. Good films but not favorites.

    Good work Bruce. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Dan….I assume you have seen all 100 movies…..I would be shocked if you had not. There were 42 released before I was born. Thanks for the feedback on this page. I will probably add some more (maybe a Top 250) in a while. Good stuff.

  3. I have seen 67 of these movies. It may be a surprise, but I have seen some films that were released in the last twenty years if they were nominated for best picture. However, 52 of the films were released before I was born.

    1. Hey Flora. Thanks for checking out our brand new Top 100. We toyed with changing about a year ago, but never decided to make the change until recently. Kudos on seeing almost a third of the movies made after 1976. I have seen all of the Top 100….heck only a few have I seen only once. Good stuff as always…I hope things are going well in your neck of the woods.
