Hey Dan. Thanks for putting these two lists together. Biggest surprise is the amount of movies Finch made with Michael Hordern…an actor that I am not aware of at all. List is loaded with English actors. As for the second list…..25 is a below average total….almost 20% of that total comes from one movie…Network. 4 on the list from the movie….and you left off Beatrice Straight who won her Oscar for Network. Hey Flora…thanks for the thoughts on Peter Finch. Tally count: Flora 11, Steve 8, Cogerson 6 and bob cox 3. I have seen two of your favorites….I really like The Flight of the Phoenix….not a huge fan of The Nun’s Story…boy is that a long movie. I have only seen Network from your others list. News anchors just do not have the same power and fame they used to have…heck I can not even tell you any of the big three anchors today. Good stuff as always.

what a way to finish a career with a best actor oscar win. sadly this australian actor won posthumously , dying at 60 years of age. he appeared on the johnny carson show and the next day died of a heart attack. he and fellow australian heath ledger are the only 2 acting oscars awarded posthumously per wikipedia.

As for Elephant Walk…you are correct it should be 3rd and Phoenix should be 4th. Efforting to fix that right now. Good clarification on the lies “cliche”. Good stuff.
As I’ve mentioned before back in the “old days” of movies in the times of long ago when they didn’t shower thespians with awards and nominations for simply dressing up to attend the ceremonies Peter Finch was credited with having more awards than any other male actor with Tracy/Brando/Olivier closely on his heels.
Today IMDB credits Peter with a ‘mere’ 11 awards and 6 nominations [all earned in the period 1957 -1977] but as I have indicated that was considered a lot in those days. As Bruce said a few months ago in a post to me because of the apparently much- more-relaxed setup today it is impossible to compare the value of today’s formal accolade totals with those of yesteryear.
The great Katharine Hepburn for example is credited with just 55 awards/noms whereas Meryl Streep has 542 listed for her. Taken at face statistical value Meryl would thus be nearly 10 times greater as an actress than Katie; and it would seem that all those Al Leach screwball comedies have not in the end historically “cut it” for poor Katie’s historical legend.
However if you believe THAT then as the tagline on the posters for the 1978 Superman said “You’ll believe a man can fly!” As the cliché goes “there are lies. damned lies and statistics!” Anyway I’ve seen 11 of the films listed above. I like the miniature from Network but I marginally preferred Peter’s performance as the romantically-obsessed gentleman farmer William Boldwood in Far From the Madding Crowd. A fine profile here by WH of a great actor “Voted Up!”
ADDITIONAL TRIVIA: Jimmy Stewart was first offered Howard Beale but turned down the part because of his perception of excessive bad language in the movie [he’d probably have had a heart attack if asked to make a film with Joe Pesci/Willis/DeNiro!]. In a TV interview Golden Holden sheepishly disowned his bedroom scene in the movie and half-apologized to viewers for it.
Hey Bob. Interesting take on the awards of today and yesterday. Seems when I was younger…..the Oscar nominations was the one people talked about the most….now today there are so many awards. Not thinking Streep is 10 times better than the Great Kate….I can buy 9 times..lol.
