HI STEVE: Thanks for the feedback and further Holmes quotes. 3 further examples from Doyle’s books-

    1/
MILLIONAIRE: “Mr Holmes if you take my case I will pay you an exceptional fee of your choosing.”
HOLMES: “My fees are of a fixed scale – except when I remit them altogether.”

    2/
PUGILIST Sent by powerful politician to warn Sherlock off a case: “This is what happens Mr Holmes to those who cross my master.” The Pugilist lifts a thick poker from Holmes’ fireplace and bends the bar in two. Then he struts from the room glancing back menacingly at Holmes and Watson.
DR WATSON [Clearly unnerved] “Aren’t YOU frightened Holmes?
HOLMES: “Not at all” bending the poker back straight again as he speaks.

    3/
There were 5 of them but with a mixture of judo and boxing Holmes kept them at bay until the police arrived and arrested all 5.

STEVE Some current smart a***s have attempted to claim that Holmes and Watson were in a gay relationship and that Doyle gives us the clue in Sherlock’s surname which is code for “homo”

Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info, trivia and the extract from A Scandal in Bohemia, much appreciated.

Glad you liked the posters and stills.

I wrote about Sherlock Holmes movies years ago, this excerpt from ‘Terror By Night’ made me smile –

The Star of Rhodesia diamond is stolen on board a train travelling from London to Edinburgh and the owner’s son is murdered. Holmes and Watson are on the case –

Dr. Watson: “I say Holmes try some of this curry. It’s excellent.”

Sherlock Holmes: “Curry? Horrible stuff! Steak and kidney pudding, please.”

I enjoyed the two Robert Downey Jr Sherlocks though I’m sure the Holmes purists were horrified. I hope they make a third one.

What was the subject again? Oh yes Rachel McAdams, surprised Bruce hasn’t done a page on this lovely actress considering all the obscurities unleashed in recent days on the UMR such as Laurence Harvey, Jeffrey Hunter and Brigitte Bardot. Oh the humanity! [Bob grimaces]

I’m kidding of course. I sometimes sneak a peek at Bruce’s index page when I run out of ideas for subjects and sometimes beating him to the punch. I’ve already done videos on the three people I mentioned.

Spotlight is the highest rated movie in McAdams filmography, scoring 9 out of 10, it would easily top Bruce’s chart if he got round to it with Midnight in Paris at no.2.

There are several films scoring 8 out of 10 iincluding Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Strange and Midnight in Paris.

Spotlight also tops IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes charts.

“I wanted to be a secretary, I love paper clips and staplers.”

“I’m a sucker for those sweeping love stories. When I read the script for The Notebook I couldn’t stop crying! I just had such a powerful, instantaneous reaction – it was written so well

A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind.

He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer.

They were admirable things for the observer — excellent for drawing the veil from men’s motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results.

Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory
