Requests

requests1

Thankfully we get lots of requests for new pages.  Well…the wife recently informed me that my way of collecting my requests was pretty weak.  She seems to think that writing down requests on whatever piece of paper or napkin or bill that is currently on my desk is not the way to do it.  So….since she is way smarter than me….I have decided to create a page just for requests.  Plus it should give a good idea of what pages are coming down the pike.

My logic in picking which page to do next….I lean heavily towards the subject that has the most requests.

  • Roger Corman – request by Dan
  • Peter Cushing – request made by SteveLensman, Dan & Brando 90
  • Disney Live Action 1967-1980 – request by Mimic
  • Foreign Movies requested by Laurent
  • Samuel Goldwyn – request by Dan
  • Sam Katzman – request by Dan
  • Fritz Lang – request by Lupino, Just Me
  • Bruce Lee – request by Brando 90
  • Harold Lloyd – request by Søren, Me
  • Henry Mancini – request by Flora
  • Patricia Medina – request by Dan
  • Mirisch Brothers – request by Dan
  • Edward Small – request by Dan
  • Rudolph Valentino – request by Laurent

Completed requests:

Many more to come…have to find all of my old napkins and transfer the requests to this page.

  1. Will be interesting to see the stats on Clifton Webb! He was an unusual box office attraction by Hollywood Standards! As for Donna Reed- I can’t remember a single film that she was supposed to carry on her shoulders alone. I think she became so popular with her TV career and her own show.
My request: Maybe one of the brightes “forgotten” stars of the 30’s and early 40’s- Miss Margaret Sullavan. She only made 16 movies if I counted correctly, but she was critically acclaimed for her acting chops on screen as well as in the theater.

    1. Hey Lupino…. the Clifton Webb page is now published….I wish they were all that easy to do.

You are correct about Donna Reed. I am sure can let us know how many times she carried a movie on her own….it will be few for sure.

I will add Margaret Sullivan to the request….wow only 16 movies…sounds promising. Thanks for the suggestion.

      1. Hey Bruce,

thanks for including Miss Sullavan. I was so smitten by her that I used to have a youtube channel dedicated to her years ago…never done anything similar before or since lol. Good news is, she was NOT under contract to Paramount, but to Universal for most of her career. Will check out CW now 🙂

        1. Hey Lupino….well the good news is…of her 17 movies….10 of them are already in the database

Shop Around the Corner, The (1940) $72.30 million 90.00%
          Mortal Storm, The (1940) $99.70 87.33%
          So Ends Our Night (1941) $71.40 77.50%
          Three Comrades (1938) $149.00 77.00%
          Good Fairy , The (1935) $72.60 76.50%
          Shopworn Angel (1938) $90.20 73.00%
          So Red The Rose (1935) $41.60 64.50%
          Moon’s Our Home, The (1936) $46.90 62.00%
          Shining Hour, The (1938) $117.60 57.00%
No Sad Songs For Me (1950) $41.40 54.00%

Of the remaining 7 movies….I feel good about finding box office on 5 of them….her very first two movies might be an issue….but doing only deep research on 2 movies is nothing at all to research. So in a nutshell….she will probably be coming soon…especially the next time I get into a time squeeze. 🙂

          1. Wow, thanks for the quick “delivery”! In a book assessing the box office hits of the 30’s, author Allen Ayles lists Only yesterday and Little Man, what now? both among the hits of its respective year. Unfortunately, he only very rarely offers exact numbers- not in these cases. Anyway, looking forward to Miss Sullavan’s own UMR Page!

          2. Hey Lupino….glad you found these partial stats on Maureen….she was actually born in my same town….sadly that never gets mentioned these says…as Norfolk, Va does not seem to claim her anymore…but I imagine back in the day they.

Good to know there are some sources out there for her first few movies. I will have to check out that book by Allen Ayles. Typically I rotate between current performers and classic performers….the next one will be a current performer…and then Maureen might be next.

          3. As I said, one of the brightest forgotten stars, not even her hometown seems to remember her…but then, she died almost 60 years ago, her last big success as a movie actress was almost 80 years ago. Nowadays, I am afraid the most common knowledge about Margaret Sullavan centers around the pretty depressing book written by her daughter, Haywire. This has been turned into a TV movie starring Lee Remick. Sullavan seemed to have been highly troubled throughout her life and highly depressed towards her end. Without a “Gone with the Wind” like classic among her films, people seem to forget easily.
I remember when two time Oscar winner Luise Rainer died at 104, I was looking through the papers waiting to find an obituary. Rainer was born “just around the corner”, was the first Oscar winner to win back to back Oscars and was a welcomed guest on german Talk Shows in her later years. What did I find? 5 or 6 lines without a photo, and no mention in the major german TV news.

          4. Hey Lupino…..well….I will try and help some people remember her….the next page we do (Danny Glover was last night) will be a classic star….current it will either be Maureen or Donna Reed.

Yes indeed it is a shame that time is like a high tide rolling on a sand castle on the beach…no matter how great a job you do…..the tide eventually starts to make it go away.

I look forward to finding out more of a “local girl done good”…in my area.

    1. Hey BryRog57….thanks for all of the suggestions….very interesting picks from you….Rachel Weisz might have the best movies….the others would be interesting to see.

        1. Hey BryRog57….true he has some blockbusters in his past…..just not sure how many GR fans are out there….I guess we will find out.
