  1. IMDB credits Sylvia with just 2 acting awards and 2 noms but her career has been reasonably lucrative as she has a reported net worth of $20 million on her sad death yesterday.

I have seen 4 of her movies-

    Midnight Cowboy
    Parrish
Wall Street [I have not seen Wall Street 2]
    Evil under the Sun.

Parrish, which along with 1959’s A Summer Place made a star for a short while of the young Troy Donahue, is particularly nostalgic for me. Sylvia had a good innings at 94 years of age but when Parrish [her second theatrical movie as faithfully noted above] was made she was just a young woman of 37.

    Voted up.

    1. Hey Bob. Thanks for checking out our tribute to Sylvia Miles. $20 million net worth is pretty impressive…she most have invested her acting money very wisely. I have seen 5 of her movies. So I am just slightly ahead of you in the tally count. Good stuff on Troy Donahue. Getting her big break in movies at 37 is pretty impressive…sounds like she beat the curse of 39….at least in a few different areas. Good stuff as always. RIP!

      1. Even when the numbers of others are low, Ma, I can’t make it to the Top of the World of “have seen” movies! Good point about The Curse. I must confess I did not initially think of THAT myself. Of course in life in general, 36 when Sylvia made her first movie is young [especially when one is 78 oneself!].

However a woman in Hollywood starting an acting career at 36 reminds me of Wilford Brimley’s Pop Fisher saying to Redford’s ageing Roy Hobbs in 1984’s The Natural “Fella you’re starting out in baseball at an age when everybody else is retiring!”

Accordingly Sylvia could be said to have (1) proved Bob Dylan’s line that “The last one now shall later be first” (2) been brave -and talented – enough to confront The Curse head on when it is usually at the height of its powers.

Certainly almost 60 years after her debut in Murder Inc, Sylvia was still going strong at the time of her death aged 94 having been (1) 3rd billed in a short movie called ‘Old Monster’ in 2013 (2) this year filming the movie Japanese Borscht scheduled for release this July. [Her character is called Mary Tess and again Sylvia is 3rd billed.]

Therefore, albeit as a supporting actress, Mary was able to find a path through The Curse, and accordingly just as supporting actor Wallace Ford is said to have had inscribed on his tombstone “Here lies Wallace Ford. Top billing at last.” a fitting epitaph for Sylvia would perhaps be simply “I Beat IT!” Certainly an amazing lady and a great professional to the end.

    1. Hey Jack. I have read some stories about Andy Warhol and his friends. They had a pretty wild life. Rest in Peace Ms. Miles.

  2. R.I.P. the fabulous and flamboyant Sylvia Miles aged 94. One of my favourite films she was in has to be Agatha Christie’s “Evil Under The Sun” as Myra Gardener, what fabulous outfits!

    1. Hey Owen….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Sylvia Miles. Evil Under The Sun is one of her career highlights for sure. Rest in Peace.

  3. Fun Sylvia Miles fact: Her two Oscar-nominated performances add up to just under 13 total minutes of screen time, which is the shortest total for an actor with multiple nominations.

    1. Hey Matthew……that is an excellent movie fact. Thanks for sharing it. Rest in Peace Ms. Miles.
